At Year 10 students continue to develop their critical understanding and control of the English language. As Year 10 English is a direct preparation for Year 11 and 12 it mirrors the requirements of VCE English.
Students are provided with a broad range of closely connected learning experiences designed to encourage them to become more confident, thoughtful, discriminating and imaginative communicators as readers, viewers, writers, speakers and listeners in both formal and informal situations.
Unit 1: Crafting Texts: “Writing About Futures”
Students read texts under the broad theme of 'Writing About Futures. They then craft texts designed for a specific context and audience to achieve a stated purpose; and to describe individual decisions made about the vocabulary, text structures, language features and conventions used during writing processes.
Unit 2: Reading and Responding - Analytical Text Response: "The War Poems - Wilfred Owen"
Students explain and explore the ideas and issues presented by authors through character, setting and plot, and engage with textual structures and features. Students’ exploration of text involves understanding and appreciating the possibilities of storytelling, and examining the role of language, features and structures in creating meaning. Students adopt and apply language to explain key aspects of the text.
Unit 3: Exploring and Presenting argument:
In this unit of work students will analyse argument and persuasive language. Students will consider how authors employ structure, word choice and appeals to persuade specific audience groups within current media issues. They look closely at the language used by the author in the quest to convince their audience. On completion of this unit, the student should be able to explore and analyse persuasive texts, and the ways arguments and language can be used to position an audience.
Unit 4: Reading and Responding - Analytical Text Response: "Macbeth"
Students read and analyse Shakespeare's Macbeth as a class. They then write an analytical essay analysing and exploring the vocabulary, text structures, language features and ideas in the text.
