At Year 10, students use a range of everyday language both orally and in writing to exchange information about their personal, social, local worlds and about broader issues of personal significance. Topics include past and present migrations, technology and environment, future plans and aspirations. At year 10, students communicate thoughts and opinions, make comparisons and contrasts and offer reasons for points of view, opinions and preferences. They express desires and plans for the future. They give presentations, and formulate and respond to a range of questions. They interpret information and attitudes in a range of informational and imaginative texts. They create written texts such as descriptions, narratives and recounts that convey experiences, ideas and emotions. They produce bilingual texts, plan what needs to be communicated to particular audiences and consider different perspectives.
Students use a wide range of texts such as textbooks, teacher-generated materials and online resources. Their learning is enriched by exposure to a range of authentic Italian texts such as websites, films, stories, songs, television programs, advertisements and magazines. Students will have opportunities to engage with members of the community who speak Italian. As Italian is widely spoken in Australia, many opportunities exist to listen to and use the language in real-life situations, as well as through the Italian media in Australia and in actual and virtual connections with Italian communities in Italy and beyond.
Students continue to develop a metalanguage to analyse and discuss features of language choice and cultural practice. This can be transferred to other languages and utilised to communicate with people from different linguistic and cultural backgrounds. The Italian curriculum is aligned to the English curriculum in order to enhance students’ understanding of text types and language choices.
