Woodshop Beginning Projects

Woodshop Intro Projects

After viewing the introductory video passing the QUIZ,  you will complete the following steps:

Practice cut 1: easy wave.  Ask Ms. Vogel for a piece of wood with a wavy line for you to follow.

Practice cut 2: zig-zags!! Again, ask Ms. Vogel to trace a zig-zag for you.

Practice cut 3:

+Choose an animal outline pattern from the tub in the wood shop.

+Trace the pattern onto a piece of wood.

- Watch out for knots!

- Place the pattern near the edges of the wood so you don’t waste, don’t place it right in the middle.

+Cut the pattern out - take your time, be patient, let the blade do the cutting.

+Sand your cut piece.

-First, use 80 or 100 grit sandpaper - sand along the grain, not across the grain.

-Next, use 180 or 200 grit sandpaper.

-Now that the piece is pretty smooth, finish it up with 400 grit to make it super smooth.

HAVE MS. VOGEL CHECK YOUR SANDING BEFORE YOU PAINT!

+Prime your piece to prepare it for its final coat of paint. Ask for ASSISTANCE from me with this :)  Primer seals the wood so that it remains smooth when you paint it with whatever color you want. If you are waiting for a piece to dry and you have a lot of time, start a second piece!!

-Shake the can of primer really, really, really well.

-Hold the spray can about 4-6 inches away from the surface you wish to spray.

-Use very light, passing strokes to cover your work. Remember, you can always add more primer, but if you put on too much, it will drip and warp. You will have to do extra sanding when it is dry. LESS is more :)

-Do not prime the whole thing. Prime one side, then let it dry (for at least an hour  so that means over night for you), then spray the other side.

-Once your piece is dry, SAND it again! - with 400 grit paper to smooth it.

+Paint your piece. You have some choices.

1 - You can spray paint it one color.

2 - You can spray paint stripes or patterns on it using masking.

3 - You can hand paint it with brushes.

1 Painting one color: Choose the available spray color you like and follow the same steps as with priming, EXCEPT don’t sand it at the end.

2 Stripes!!

-Choose the color for the stripes and the color for the background.

-You will spray the stripe color first.

-Wherever you would like there to be a stripe, spray the piece the color of the stripe, then let it dry COMPLETELY.

-Use blue masking tape to cover the part that you want to become the stripe. Be very certain that you press the edges of the tape down TIGHTLY. Rubbing the flat part of your fingernail back and forth along the edge helps.

-Spray the entire piece the background color, and let it dry completely.

-Remove the tape and admire your beautiful work!!

3 - Hand paint with brushes. You will use brushes and acrylic paint. You can put small amounts of paint on a paper plate to mix different colors that you like. Be certain to wash the brushes VERY WELL with soap and water. If the paint is allowed to dry in the brushes, the brushes will dry hard like a rock and will be ruined.

Piece number 4!! : Now it gets really good! You are going to design your own piece. You have some choices:

+Draw your design freehand.  OR

+Choose a design from the internet. If you do this, do an image search and choose something with an outline that seems reasonably easy to cut.

-Find the design you like online.

-Open a “Word” document.

-Zoom the “page” of the Word document so that it is the same size as a regular piece of paper when you hold a regular piece of paper up to the computer screen.

-Go to your chosen image from your image search.

-Right-click on the image and select “copy”.

-Click on your Word document and right-click and select “paste”. - If you are not able to transfer the image, you may need to choose a different one.

-Click on the image in your Word document. Resize it until it is the size you like on the paper. HOWEVER, be sure that it will still fit on the piece of wood you have available.

-Print your Word document to Bear Valley Robotics Lab color hp 653

-Transfer your image to the piece of wood you have available. You have choices:

=Cut it out, align the cutout on the wood and trace it.

=Color the entire outline of it ON THE BACK with pencil graphite, then flip it over, align it on the wood and trace it. The graphite on the back should leave a mark on the wood.

Now that you have a design on the wood, follow the same steps for Practice cut 3!
