Drought and Water Usage
Monday, April 4
This(below and at this link) is a drought monitor brought to us by NOAA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association. Below is an screenshot from the webpage that just shows California. If you click on it, it will take you to the website and you can see that there is significant drought across the entire western US, but for this exercise, the screenshot below is all you need.
If you look at the color coding, you can see that 100% of the state is AT LEAST "Abnormally dry", which is the least severe drought condition.
Find San Diego, and identify its drought level.
Describe the effects felt by areas that have this level of drought.
Look at each drought level. What are the things that start to happen as drought worsens?
After discussing the answers to these questions, refer to your packet and work with your partner to estimate your daily water usage. (Scroll down this page to see a copy of the page from your packet.)
Discussion questions:
Give some reasons why you and your partner might have some different estimates.
Tell which of the activities on the list you would be willing to do with dirty water, and explain why
If you were allowed to do only 3 activities on the list with clean water, and the rest for the rest you had to get water directly from a lake or stream, which three would you choose and why?
