ChatGPT is fast becoming a valuable tool for teachers! Not only can this AI chatbot save you time and improve your teacher workflow, it can also help you create innovative learning experiences and build easy assessment opportunities.
ChatGPT can be used by teachers to help make their workloads more manageable in several ways:
Automating routine tasks: ChatGPT can be used to automate routine tasks such as grading multiple-choice quizzes, providing feedback on writing assignments, or generating lesson plans. By automating these tasks, teachers can save time and focus on more meaningful interactions with their students.
Providing support for individualized learning: ChatGPT can help teachers provide support for individualized learning by generating personalized quizzes or assessments based on student performance. This can help teachers identify areas where students may need additional support and provide targeted interventions.
Generating instructional resources: ChatGPT can generate instructional resources such as lesson plans, worksheets, or study guides. This can save teachers time and ensure that their instructional materials are up-to-date and relevant.

As with all new skills and processes, there is some learning required to becoming proficient with the use of this program. Thankfully though, if you want to know how to do something with ChatGPT, you can just ask it to tell you how to do something and it will likely be able to tell you ( the above text was generated by ChatGPT when I asked it to provide a beginners guide for teachers using chaptGPT, for example). The more you use this tool, the better you will get at giving it instructions that lead to useful resources for you. In addition, the more you use this tool, the more faml=iliar you will become with what it spits out and the more likely you will be able to recognise its use in student work.

Create Assessment Supports
Write open-ended questions: “Give me 10 question prompts to assess students’ understanding of animal adaptations.”

Create questions based on a video transcript: Copy YouTube (or other video) transcript and paste into ChatGPT. Ask to “Generate 5 multiple choice/fill-in-the-blank/open-ended questions from this transcript.”

ask ChatGPT to: "write me a sample student response to the prompt: "discuss, with reference to contemporary ideas, models and research, the importance of culturally responsive to mental health services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples in Australia". yo can then add additional criteria to further refine what it provides you with (for example, you can ask for a particular word count, for a set number of references to be used and a referencing style to be applied)
you can also have it generate summaries for students to review on key informtion (in place of textbooks, for example) and then request that it provides comprehension questions, case studies and sutiable classroom activities for a set age or curriculum level.
Differentation support
you can get GPT to help you to differentiate a unit of work as well as to write units of work that are differentiated if you provide it with the ways in which you want differentiation to be used.
Organise your life...
you can also get it to write you meal plans (you set the conditions - calorie count, ingredients to use and not use) and shopping list to match, write poems for special occaisions or brithday card messages, give you ideas for possible birthday or anniversary gifts for people and organise your schedule.
be wary though.....
ChatGPT can be a game changer but always be aware that it has its limitations and flaws. for example, if it doesn't know something or it will provide you with information that it thinks might answer your question rathr than admit to not knowing. this means that sometimes the information that you provide is not accurate.
it is currently blocked at Department locations by the Department. you can get around this by hotspotting off your phone or, apparently, BIng GPT is available - it is free and owned by Microsoft so is available through your Microsoft education account.
Also, if you are using the free version, it will likely struggle with anything more recent than 2021. This is becuase it doesn't have real time access to the internet and so will be search for infomration from what was likely on the internet in 2021 (when it was launched). the newer versions (which you pay for) will access the current Internet though so if this is an issue for you, it might be worth signing up.
It can take some time to get your prompts working as well as they should. if you provide ChatGPT with more infromtion about what you are trying to do, this can help. so for example, if i wanted a rubric developed as a developmental rubric in the style of Patrick Griffin's work from MGSE, I might ask ChatGPT if it is aware of Griffin's work on developmental rubrics at MGSE. it will then give me what it knows and if i then prompt it to develop a rubric for specific criteria to assess studnet understanding of a particular curriculum, it will do a much better job than if i just ask it to write up a rubric.

It could also be something that you work with your teams to incorporate into your current work - use your curriculum planning time or PLC time to provide each other with ideas and prompts that work.
