S3 LITERACY

Curricular Area: LITERACY

Subject: English

English is compulsory in S3 and this final BGE year is used to prepare learners for sitting qualifications in S4.

Decisions about which course a learner will progress to in S4 will be made in S3 so learners are given opportunities, across a range of tasks, to demonstrate their skills.

The S3 course will focus on the development of core skills in Reading, Writing, Talking, and Listening.

Through the study of a broad range of texts, both fiction and non-fiction, learners will develop their knowledge of more complex language and literary devices, which will feed into their own literacy skills.

Activities such as debating and writing creatively or persuasively will provide learners with opportunities to practise using language to create effect, building their skills and confidence in this area ahead of S4.

While studying English in S3, learners should enhance their ability to analyse and use language for a range of purposes.

Subject: FRENCH

Students will learn French in the contexts of Society, Culture and Employability.

The key skills of Listening, Talking, Reading and Writing will be further developed in S3.  Students will enhance their language skills through the use of up-to-date technology such as digital listening equipment, PCs, the Internet and Chromebooks.

Learning a language impacts positively on other areas of the curriculum and can enhance literacy skills.  It also builds cultural awareness and acceptance and appreciation of new and different cultures.

Many colleges and universities require an SQA language qualification for entry.  Typically this is a National 5 qualification.

A foreign language is beneficial for career choices such as travel, tourism, hospitality, marketing, business, journalism, law, primary teaching and many more.

Young people are better equipped to succeed in the competitive global economy if they have knowledge of a foreign language.

France is a key economic partner: the world’s fifth biggest economy and number three destination for foreign investment. It is also an official language in 29 countries and spoken on every continent.
