Week 8
March 17-18
Mode: This will be an in-class assessment task.
Throughout the term, you have been learning about the different elements that make photographs and how to experiment with them creatively. We used the AIMMEE framework to help us understand that photographs are made to connect to specific audiences, with the intention of creating particular feelings which are shown through making the photograph, using subject, background, colour and lighting, the method of the photo, such as camera angles and compositional tools and the editing, from Photoshop to physical collage. You will now use these skills to evaluate some photographs by others that you will explore.
The week leading up to the in-class task, you can do research, collect notes and write APA references
You can bring a single-sided A4 sheet into the session with notes (written or typed) to support you (font size 11 or above)
Your notes sheet will be collected and included in assessing you
You will get a single class period (approx 50 minutes) to type your analysis in a Google form.
How have the elements of 'Make' and 'Method' been used to communicate a specific intention or surreal meaning in the work of Jerry Uelsmann?
To understand how you will be marked, see the rubric provided on Google classroom.

C Level Analysis Example
Make
The “Make” elements in this image have been manipulated by Man Ray to convey meaning to the audience.
The deliberate choice to depict the model in a pose resembling a violin highlights the natural similarity of the female form to the instrument, and invites the viewer to question the parallels that Man Ray may be drawing. Despite most of her body depicting a violin, Man Ray has chosen to pose her with part of her face visible. This establishes a separation between the model and the violin – depicting her as more human and multi-dimensional.
The background is kept minimal which draws the viewer directly to the main subject and establishes her as of high importance. It also appears that the photograph was taken inside, creating a sense that this was a private moment between the subject and photographer.
The diffused lighting softens the contours of the model’s body, allowing a significant contrast to be created with the addition of the f-holes, making them appear indented like on a real violin.
Method
Man Ray uses a variety of compositional tools that fall within the Method category to communicate his intended meaning to the audience.
The composition is balanced, with the model almost filling the entire frame. This conveys a sense of intimacy between the model and viewer, as she is depicted in a vulnerable position close to the lens.
Man Ray has also adjusted the aperture to create a shallow depth of field, quite similar to what the eye would naturally see. Similar to the effect that the minimal background creates, this also reduces distractions and leads the eye directly to the model.
Some movement can be seen in the model’s head, suggesting that a slower shutter speed may have been used. As the remainder of the composition appears to be still, it is likely that a tripod was used. This enhances her humanity by presenting her as a living being, in contrast to the musical instrument which she is imitating.
Intention
The “make” and “method” elements which have been adopted by Man Ray combine to convey layered meanings to the audience. The image could be interpreted as a critique of the objectification of women as there are multiple techniques used which highlight the model’s humanity and present her as a multi-dimensional being. Additionally, the title of the artwork explicitly references another multi-disciplinary artist, Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, who was known for his painting, while his violin-playing was seen as a “hobby” or something which he engaged in purely for pleasure. This presents the violin, and the woman by extension, as a toy or something to be played with. Paired with the techniques that highlight the woman’s complexity, the image playfully rejects this idea and presents her as a living being to the audience.
