Mode: This task can be completed at home and at school
Now that we have explored how technical and symbolic codes create meaning, you are to produce a short film that explores the concept of identity.
Identity is the story of who we are. It can be how we see ourselves, how the world sees us, or the "masks" we wear to fit in. You may choose to look at this through a "Coming of Age" lens, a music video, or a character-driven story.
All prompts must center on the theme of Identity:
The Persona:
Show the difference between a person's public "mask" and their private self.
The Transition:
A story about outgrowing an old version of yourself to find someone new.
The Parody:
Use "Coming of Age" film tropes to make a comedic comment on teenage life.
The Object:
Tell the story of a person’s identity entirely through the things they own or carry.
To demonstrate your technical growth, your film must include:
The Mandatory Prop: THE MASK Every film must feature a "mask." This can be literal (a costume mask, heavy makeup, sunglasses, medical mask, a face shield) or figurative (a digital Snapchat filter, a "skin-care" face mask, or even a heavy shadow obscuring the face).
Intentional Coverage: Use your required shot types to show both the environment and the character's emotions.
Purposeful Movement: Use at least two planned camera movements (Pan, Tilt, or Zoom). Other shots are "locked off" on a tripod.
Clean Edits: Ensure your cuts are smooth and intentional, showing a clear flow of time or ideas.
To meet the standard for this unit, you must follow these four production phases. Everything you do in these phases must be documented in your Production Journal.
Phase 1: Development & Pre-Production
Concept & Identity: Define your vision. What part of "Identity" are you exploring?
The Mask: Identify your mandatory "Mask" (literal or figurative).
Visual Mapping: Complete your Script, Storyboard, and Shot List. Identify your two camera movements.
Phase 2: Production (The Shoot)
Technical Precision: Capture your required shot types (A: 3 | T: 4–5).
The Locked-Off Rule: Ensure the camera is on a tripod for all shots except your two planned movements.
Coverage: Film "clean frames" and capture "Behind the Scenes" (BTS) photos of your setup.
Phase 3: Post-Production (The Edit)
Continuity: Edit for a smooth flow using "cutting on action."
Sound Design: Add audio that reinforces the theme of Identity.
Tertiary Only: Apply colour grading to enhance the mood.
Phase 4: Reflection & Review
Peer Feedback: Share your draft and record the feedback received.
Self-Evaluation: Complete the scaffolded reflection in your journal.
Format: Export as H.264 or MP4 (.mp4) file.
Naming: FirstName_Lastname_Identity
Upload: Submit the video file to Google Classroom by the due date.
References: Make sure to save your sources as a reference list will be included in your Production Journal.
To understand how you will be marked, see the rubric provided on Google classroom.

AI Check
This task assesses YOUR creative vision and technical skill.
❌ No-Go: AI-generated video, AI-written scripts, or AI-automated editing.
✅ Allowed: Brainstorming "Identity" concepts or using AI to help plan your shooting schedule.
🔎 Transparency: Any AI assistance must be acknowledged in your Production Journal with a screenshot.
🚨 Consequences of Misuse:
If AI is used in ways not permitted, it will be treated as plagiarism. This may result in:
A score deduction, non-submission, or a required redo of the task.
A Sentral record of AI misuse, which applies across all of your class subjects.
A meeting with executive staff if AI misuse occurs in multiple tasks, potentially affecting your course completion (e.g. v grade).
