Liberalization of Reading

Plastered to a stiff chair for continuous hours pierces a student’s back with life long aches and memoirs of dreaded butt sores. Student’s ears go numb to the sounds of crisp pages consistently being flipped over. As heavy eyes merely skim the surface of literature dumped upon a learner, this routinely based education becomes banal, with no flexibility to the array of learning styles. Lack of communication between instructor and student forms a bland and abrupt interaction in place of what could be a rich exchange of ideas.

Directing a rigidly structured class filled with misinformation allows an inefficient system to thrive often paving the way for a punitive relationship between instructor and learner. In that, students construct a fixed mindset based on a forced education provided within an educational building. The value of reading is being enforced in an unenjoyable manner, leading learners to lose interest in what could be an incredible learning experience. In a class environment, it is expected for students to input their voices, ideas, and authenticity within discussions. For instance, summer reading and its acknowledgment once the school year restarts become almost absurd when the class discussion is nonexistent and thus, deteriorates the emerging relationship between educator and students.

Depriving students of free form reading does not bode well in the transition from restricted thinking to the open world. Causing senseless ideologies to be formed based off of misled information. Whether a student or not, a human who does not read for pleasure is more often a reactionary human. A student who has not experienced finalizing any long-form reading has a deficiency of patience. Reactionary mannerisms are developed when one is not well educated by an array of well-written literature.

Moving forward, the aim of reading is to evolve readers into learned individuals with open-minded perceptions of the world and society. In doing so, students of all cultures and social rankings will acquire a life with less anxiety and fear in the evolution of society. Long form reading also exposes learners to the plight of humanity which allows for authenticity to bloom from within. The blessed outcome of reading nonfiction and fictional texts would include stamina and patience, useful for introducing navigational options during the complexities of adult life. Much like effort and consistency is expected from the student, an academic conversation with feedback based on the topic at hands is presumed from the instructor. Offering a solution to trite class curriculums would be Harkness, Socratic, and Hochman methods. Using these systems to formulate and promote shared class discussions, would concede the opportunity for learners to bestow experiences and ideas intertwined among literature.
