Write for Rights

Global Citizenship & Global Seminar

The Global Citizenship students took part in the "Write for Rights" campaign as a part of Amnesty International. This campaign fights for "Human Rights Defenders" who have been identified by Amnesty International as being persecuted or arrested for standing up for human rights. As a part of the unit on "The Global Citizen as an Individual" the students were able to see how individual people can make an impact around the world, and how they as students can make an impact themselves. The students wrote letters to Human Rights Defenders from throughout the world as well as their governments in order to stop violations of human rights.

"I personally feel like my understanding of human rights of those around the world has been more defined, and I think I have a firmer grasp on how lucky I am to be where I am, and how it's my duty as a citizen to ensure everyone has those same universal rights. "
"After learning about the difficult circumstances across the world, I now understand why human rights laws are necessary because even the most basic rights can be taken away from a person for no reason. At first, I was confused as to why there were laws for basic rights because I assumed everyone should be treated like a human, but I realized I am privileged. It felt really good to advocate for someone else's rights because I want to make a difference. Even though writing a simple letter didn't take that much time or work, it felt good knowing that I had hopefully changed someone's live for the better or brightened their day. "
"By participating in the Global Citizenship I have learned that a lot of work needs to get down in our world. I thought that most people did not have to worry about getting arrested for protesting. This was not the case, I am glad that I can write these letters to help others. This class has impacted me in a very positive way."
"After reading all of the articles, I came to the understanding that not everyone is given their basic human rights. In a lot of third world countries they don't have handicap accessible buildings. On the other hand, here in the US almost every single building is handicap accessible. Gulzar Duishenova is a handicaped women. She is fighting for all handicap people in Kyrgyzstan. She is fighting for human rights equal to every able bodied person. Her strength and determination inspires me to stand up for my human rights and the human rights of others."
Happy List 2018-2019

HHS Happy LIst

Our world can often feel dominated by fame, cynicism, disgrace and greed. The Happy List offers a welcome chance to celebrate a different set of values, honoring those who help others without thought of enriching themselves. That’s something we should all feel happy and optimistic about.

Each week students in the Global Citizenship Course will be profiling HHS staff, students, parents, or community members that help make our community a stronger place to be.
