National Honor Society

The National Honor Society advised by Mrs.Mallon has been planning big things for our campus. They are excited to bring the Crush for a Crush fundraiser as well as a tutoring opportunity for those who need help in math. The Crush for a Crush fundraiser will run from January 30th to February 10th . Besides Valentine's fundraiser, NHS will be offering tutoring in Algebra for students during FLEX in the upstairs dining hall. Tutoring will be done by the students and advised by Mr.Mallon, our math coach.

With Crush for a Crush starting on January 30th and tutoring being offered during FLEX, I asked Chase Derico, one of the members at large, his opinions of the upcoming events and how he thinks they can impact our campus. “Offering tutoring will have a positive impact on our campus because it shows students that there is help available”, Chase said. When asked if he believed tutoring can have a positive impact on students besides academic goals, Chase said, “Having help available during FLEX can give students a confidence boost in their math skills, especially when it will be other students helping them and not a teacher”.

Tutoring will be open to all students in Algebra on Wednesdays and Thursdays and will be open to all of FLEX in the upstairs dining hall as advised by Ms.Confer and Mr.Mallon.

As stated earlier, the Crush for a Crush Valentine's fundraiser will end by February 10th. I asked Diamond Llanos, the NHS President, what the fundraiser is and how it would be positive for students to participate. “The Crush for a Crush fundraiser will be very fun for students to participate in”, Diamond said. “A student will be able to buy a Crush soda can for their crush, this money will be given to NHS for the club to bring bigger fundraisers and more fun events for students across campus”, said Diamond. The fundraiser will be for students who would like to celebrate Valentine's day or buy something sweet for a friend and will be advised by Mr.Mallon.

REC

REC is a physical fitness elective where you can learn about all kinds of different things involving your physical fitness. This class is taught by Coach Thompson during his 6th period. The goal for the class is to teach students how to exercise their body correctly so that they can see actual results when working out. I have the pleasure of taking this class personally and actually enjoy it. Although in this class I am one of two girls. On Mondays the class goes to the weight room and does an assigned workout and as they finish they can do their own personal workout.Tuesdays and Thursdays the class either does an assignment that has to do with physical fitness. Or Coach Thompson teaches the class a sport or does a sport related activity. Last Tuesday the class did a Celebrity Workout Assignment that included researching a celebrity of your choice and finding out their workout routine. So that you can somewhat try out their workout to get the same results. This class is very easy going and great for anyone who likes to stay active.

Music of the World

In Mr. Bitter 4th period he teaches Music of the World, where students learn how to identify rhymes, beats, notes and also learn how to use cool instruments. I got to sit down with Brisa, a senior. I asked her what has been her favorite thing she's learned in music so far. She said "My favorite thing I've learned about music so far was learning some of the basics to playing piano.” -Alyssa Innoccent

Preforming Arts Club

Recap of First Semester

The Performing Arts Club has had an eventful semester. This semester alone we have put on the first musical at DHS, Theater Two’s first ever production, and our annual winter choir concert. Let alone the fundraisers we have held as well like Spooky grams and ads in our play bills.

21 Chump Street was our first ever musical production here at Discovery. They performed all throughout the fall fest and in the end it was a very special performance for both cast and audience. Bad Auditions by Bad Actors was Theater Two’s first ever time putting a live performance for others to watch. This play had many variations of actors auditioning for Romeo and Juliet and I believe Theater Two’s class put it on wonderfully and hilarious. Lastly, our annual winter Choir Concert, this is one of the performances the choir class puts on every year. This year they sang about nine songs which were filled with holiday cheer, which were beautiful.

I asked a student who is very involved with the Performing Arts Club some questions and this is how it went.

Reporter- “Hello Emily, Emily is the treasurer on the Executive team. And I will be asking her some questions today. With all that we did this year, what was your favorite part?”

Emily Williams- “My favorite thing about the performing arts club is helping with all of our performances such as B.A.B.B.A and 21 Chump Street.”

Reporter- “That’s awesome, as someone who is on the Executive team, how is it helping planning everything?”

Emily Williams- “Helping to plan everything is very fun since you get to put your own input in what happens within the club.”

With that, The Performing Arts Club would love to thank you for all the support you have given us throughout this year and hope you will continue through the next semester. Next semester we have so much more like a talent show, a full length play, another theater two production, and a spring choir concert. So, keep an eye out and come and join us.

Entrepreneurship

Entrepreneurship is a class taught here at DHS by Ms.Camus, this class is taught for periods 4, 5, 6, and 7. In class students start their day off with their bellwork. Once done, they have a class discussion about the bellwork and proceed with taking notes. The notes taken are usually about the risks of becoming an entrepreneur. Along with this, topics like requirements, financial benefits, and what it takes to be an entrepreneur. I recently got a chance to speak with Sonia Desima and ask her some questions, these were the given responses…

Overall, this class is a very good and quick way of learning how to be an entrepreneur and all the ethics around business and I also believe it could help many people succeed in their future of owning their own business.

Digital Design

Digital Design is an elective that teaches students how to make unique designs. This class learns how to use professional applications such as Adobe Design to create and edit designs using today’s technology. The teacher for this elective is Mrs. Ocasio, who is experienced in making intricate designs. Recently, I got the opportunity to interview Madison Haynes from Mrs. Ocasio’s fourth period class. When I asked her what the class is like, she responded stating that “the class is sometimes loud, but it’s nice hearing everyone engaging in the lesson.” Next, I asked her what the best part of the elective is, in which she said it’s “learning the ins and outs of technology, as well as being able to design multiple works on it.”. Lastly, I asked Madison if she enjoyed learning in this class, in which she gladly said “Yes.”. A few examples of the assignments students have to complete are the Christmas Around The World Project, Amuse Bouche Project, and the Bistro postcard. I would highly recommend taking Digital Design to students looking to get a career in creating designs for customers or for anyone who just wants to take an interesting elective.

Digital Informational Tech

I interviewed Blake Connor (10th Grade) and he is in Digital Informational Technology that is taught by Mesidor which is only taught 4th and 6th period. An assignment that Blake and others are doing currently is creating a database which he explained to be “an organized place where data is stored”. In all honesty Blake does not seem to like the class however he enjoys that the class is very interactive and the teacher is very open to questions if asked. One of the interesting things about this class Blake stated that he learned was Microsoft 360 application. Even if this class is not for Blake it is totally recommended for those who enjoy technology and learning new wonders.

Cheer

This month we want to make a special shout-out to our cheerleaders that will be leaving us this year. These seniors have been cheering for several years and each year they manage to go above and beyond every time no matter the sport. As one of the senior cheerleaders Alyssa Strickland said, the reason she started cheering was because "My friends asked me too and since I was new to the school I gave it a chance", and for any new cheerleaders she says, “Remember to go to every practice and work hard”. These ladies have been the school spirit here at DHS for a long time and we wish them all the best as they approach the end of their high school  journeys.  -Zach C

 Weightlifting

The girls weightlifting team competed on Wednesday, January 11, 2023. Everyone did really well and made their own accomplishments. Our senior Nicole Harris got first in the Olympic lift and second in the Traditional lift. I had the chance to speak with Ms. Bulson about the last meet. She was asked how she thought the team did, she responded with “the girls did really well, there was improvement throughout the season and you can see that being shown.”Payton Jones was asked a few questions regarding the girls and the season. Payton was asked what she is the most shocked to see within the sport. She said  “The discipline..” and how the girls keep going even when the odds are against them. Our girls are continuing to grow in the off season. Workouts are continuing with the boys starting up. -Nicole Harris

Girls Soccer

On January 12, the girls had an away game against Ridgeview. They unfortunately lost 8-0 but came close to scoring. Makailey Teague made a close shot and almost scored her team a goal. I spoke with Vianca Colon Mejias, she is the assistant manager for the girls soccer team. I asked her how many years she’s been the assistant manager, she replied, “this is my first year as the assistant manager and I played on the team last year.” I also asked her what her favorite part about being the assistant manager is, she said, “I enjoy being there with the girls and helping the coach out.” I also spoke with one of the players’ mom who was attending this game. I asked her, what is her favorite part about watching soccer games? " She said, “I enjoy watching my daughter play the sport she loves with the team she loves.” The girls have lost all of their games this month except for two which got forfeited. They are not giving up and want to finish their season out strong. The girls next game is on Thursday, January 19, against Avon Park.  -Payton Jones

Girls Basketball

The month of January was a very good month for our lady spartans. They won games with scores of 57-30 against Altamonte Christian, 49-37 against Aurbendale, and 54-35 against Mulberry. After the away game Friday the 20th against Lakeland the next game will be our senior night. Senior night will take place in our home gym on Monday the 23rd, against VCA, at 7:00p.m. I interviewed varsity junior player Myah Colon Sanchez and asked “How do you feel about the season this year?” she responded “I think that the season this year is going good and with every game we play we genuinely get better.” I also ask “What encouragement would you give to those who would like to try out next year?” Her response was “An encouragement I'd give to anyone wanting to join would be to play hard, believe in yourself, have fun, and you will love it as long as you give the effort to.” I also asked fan Christopher Dennie who went to the game, “What was it like being in the stands watching the great game the girls played?” He responded, “The energy in the crowd was amazing and I think the crowd energy hyped the girls up and helped them play even better and get an amazing win.” Don’t forget to come support our Discovery Lady Spartans !!!

                                                Boys Basketball

On January 12th, Discovery had a match at home against Liberty, and they won with the score being 93-61. This wasn’t only a winning game, but a record setting game by Angel Canuelas. At the game, captain and senior varsity player Angel Canuelas broke a new school record. He was able to score 52 points in a single game, which is the highest in DHS history. In this match, he had five 3 pointers, 11 rebounds, and 3 steals. We would also like to notice Willie Wilson III with 10 points, 5 rebounds, 8 assist, and 2 steals, Josean Nieves with 6 points and 5 rebounds, Entuan Flores with 10 assists and Ashan Starr with 5 points and 4 steals. I interviewed history maker Angel Canuelas, and asked him how he felt about making a school record. He responded with, “To be honest, it just felt like another game. All I was trying to do was win. There’s a lot of pressure on us this year because of the standards the last years’ team set due to them winning districts so I was just trying to win”. I continued to ask him about what his hopes are for the rest of the season. He answered, “I hope to win as much as we can and go to districts to win it all”. Lastly, I wanted to know what his plans are after he graduates. He replied, “After I graduate, I would like to get a sporty scholarship for basketball but if that doesn’t happen, I’m going to try out for overseas. I’m just trying to go as far as I can with basketball”. Congrats Angel for setting a new record. The boys currently have a record of 8-9 with the current wins from Teneoroc, Excel Christian Academy, Haines City, Liberty and Poinciana, and 2 loses from Lake Region and Mckeel Academy. With the season coming close to ending, the boys have senior night on the 27th of January. Come and support the following seniors : Lazarus Mwelwas Jr, Phiferson St. Fleur, Seth Matthews, David Mclaughlin, Josean Nieves, Entuan Flores, and Angel Canuelas. Good luck and keep up the good work! Go spartans!

Presidents Day By: Michelle

Presidents Day this year falls on February 20th. This national holiday was established in 1885, Presidents day is a federal holiday in the United States and happens to fall on the first President's birthday, George Washington. This holiday also honors the birthday of Abraham Lincoln (February 12). At first this holiday was done to celebrate the birthday of George Washington, but then realized that we can’t have a national holiday for every president’s birthday so it was changed to Presidents day. Usually on this day banks are closed, US post office workers are off, store hours will vary and students will have the day off from school. For the most part most grocery stores do remain open. People celebrate this national holiday by having public ceremonies throughout the US. -Michelle Lopez

Groundhog Day By: Brooke

Happy Groundhog Day Spartans! Do you ever remember sitting on your couch and your Grandparents would tell you that there would be another six weeks of bad winter weather? Well, that all comes from a little groundhog on google. Celebrated on February 2nd every year, groundhog day is known as the time when the next six week forecast will be set. It is said that if the groundhog sees his shadow there will be another month and a half of winter storms and possible blizzards but, if he does not see his shadow then spring is on the way. Some people can tell just by looking outside and seeing if it is particularly sunny or cloudy, and some even look for their own shadow!

Groundhog day is fun but it is also used to express a deeper meaning. The holiday is meant to express our lack of change and correction each year. This can be in relationships, careers, and bad habits. If you do not change something or try for improvement then your circumstances will stay the same. The groundhog is forced to live that same day every year until something changes. This also comes in a human form as well, being that you will receive a lesson until you learn why you needed it or what the message is. This holiday is usually only celebrated in the United States because it originated from American tradition. Some people view it as silly but some take this very seriously and use it to help prepare for upcoming weather. There is also a movie named “Groundhog Day” which was released in 1993 where Bill Murray, the voice actor of groundhog Phil, was responsible for giving the animal his name and personality. Unfortunately for Phil, he only has a 39% success rate at guessing the next six weeks accurately so I would not place all your bets just yet.  -Brooklyn Holt

Lunar New Year By: Issac

The origins of the Lunar New Year festival are thousands of years old and are steeped in legends. One legend is that of Nian, a hideous beast believed to feast on human flesh on New Year’s day. Because Nian feared the color red, loud noises, and fire, red paper decorations were pasted to doors, lanterns were burned all night, and firecrackers were lit to frighten the beast away. Lunar New Year is a festival typically celebrated in China and other Asian countries that begins with the first new moon of the lunar calendar and ends on the first full moon of the lunar calendar, 15 days later. The lunar calendar is based on the cycles of the moon, so the dates of the holiday vary slightly from year to year, beginning some time between January 21 and February 20 and this year it is on January 22. Approximately 10 days before the beginning of the new lunar year, houses are thoroughly cleaned to remove any bad luck that might be lingering inside, a custom called “sweeping of the grounds.”

Also on New Year’s day, family members receive red envelopes (lai see) containing small amounts of money. Dances and fireworks are prevalent throughout the holidays, culminating in the Lantern Festival, which is celebrated on the last day of the New Year’s celebrations. On this night colorful lanterns light up the houses, and traditional foods such as yuanxiao (sticky rice balls that symbolize family unity), fagao (prosperity cake), and yusheng (raw fish and vegetable salad) are served. Happy Lunar New Year to all!!

Natonal Humpback Whale Month By: Tyson

The National Humpback Whale Month brings awareness to the cruelty to the population of Humpback Whales. I was researching about Humpback Whales and received this good piece of information, cited from https://nationaltoday.com/humpback-whale-awareness-month/

“Humpback whales have roamed the deep spheres of the ocean for millions of years. A species of the ‘baleen whales,’ these large-bodied mammals are unlike their counterparts. Friendly, non-invasive, smart, and highly vocal. Humpback whales share a contentious history with humans, involving decades of extreme hunting which reduced the total whale population by 95% in 1985.” People still don’t realize what a decrease of Humpback Whales we have experienced over the may years.

Valentines Day By: Aileen

Valentine's Day is celebrated on February 14 and it used to celebrate love, friendship and admiration. People celebrate Valentine's day by giving little gifts, candy, writing letters, making cards, and spending time with their loved ones. According to History.com, valentines was to celebrate the anniversary of Valentine’s death in A.D 270. Over the years Valentines is celebrated differently as we just show our loved ones we care and are grateful for them. I got to talk to Michaela Ashley about her plans for Valentine’s day and she said “ I'm going to ask my crush to be my valentine, hopefully spend the day with him”. I also asked her what her ideal valentine gift was and she replied, “ a ring and flowers”.

World Cancer Day By: Anya

World Cancer Day was created on the 4 February 2000 at the World Summit Against Cancer for the New Millennium in Paris. The aim is to inform and encourage people on its prevention, early detection, and treatment.  The Paris Charter aims to promote research, prevent cancer, improve patient services, raise awareness and mobilize the global community to make progress against cancer, and includes the adoption of World Cancer Day.

Cancer has numerous types, so there are various colors and symbols used to mark a specific type of cancer and promote the fight against it. For example, the orange ribbon is for creating awareness of cancer in children, while the pink ribbon is globally associated with breast cancer awareness.

Research has shown that more than 40 percent of all cancers diagnosed and nearly half of all deaths from cancer in the United States can be attributed to preventable causes. Things like smoking, excess body weight, physical inactivity, and excessive exposure to the sun.

On this day, hundreds of events and fundraisers take place around the world each year, to bring individuals, communities, and organizations together in hospitals, schools, businesses, markets, community halls, parks, etc. to campaign and deliver the powerful reminder that those hit by cancer are not alone, and we all share a responsibility in reducing the global impact of this disease. - Anya Gunderson

Black History Month By: Michaela

Carter G. Woodson started Negro History Week in 1926. The event celebrated the history, contributions, and lives of black Americans. Negro History Week became the month-long event that it is now known as: African History Month. I spoke with Fedena Milien and asked her, "What does black history month mean to you?" she had to say, "Learning about the roots and becoming more educated of the history of ethical background and how for we as people" I also spoke with Ms. Simon, and she had to say, "Although it's a short month, I love it; it's a month dedicated to the melanated people."To draw attention to the accomplishments made by African Americans in the United States, Black History Month was established. It pays tribute to all Black people throughout American history, from the first slaves imported to the country from Africa in the early 17th century through current African American. Black History Month is a time to reflect on the past and use earlier lessons to imagine and work toward a better future. -Michaela Ashley
