National Honor Society

By offering to tutor students, having successful fundraisers, and an increase in membership, NHS has had a great school year. To wrap up the school year on a great note, NHS will be having an exciting Kiss A Senior Goodbye fundraiser and hosting a blood drive.

NHS is a nationwide organization that recognizes high school students for their academic achievements and demonstrates scholarship, leadership, service, and character. Here on campus, NHS is advised by Mrs.Mallon and meets during FLEX. NHS will be planning to have a Kiss A Senior Goodbye fundraiser that will allow students to buy chocolate kisses for Seniors who are moving on from high school to pursue their future goals. Kisses will be available to purchase on 4/17 and more information such as price and the selling locations will be released to students soon.

NHS will also be hosting a blood drive on 4/21. Students will be able to donate blood on campus during school hours. To donate blood, students will have to register from 4/18 to the 20th in the upstairs dining hall during FLEX. NHS students will be volunteering to help direct and instruct students for those who would like to donate blood.

With new events coming up and the school year coming to an end, I asked Diamond Llanos, the president of NHS about her overall thoughts about the club and how she feels this school year went. “I feel like we had an amazing year. We have had members participate regularly and we really appreciate them. I'm thankful for Ms.Mallon and the great advice that she’s given us”, Diamond said. Diamond also stated, “I am also thankful for the students that participate in our fundraisers and I hope that in future years, NHS will always be this fun.”

With the Kiss A Senior Goodbye and the blood drive, NHS will end this year on a good note and they can’t wait to see what next school year brings. The current NHS officer board.

Bible Study Club

This year has been very eventful but a fun year for DHS. The Bible Study Club has had a great year! They met up every Thursday during the second half of flex in Mr. Bitters room. They have had many sermons and leading conversations this year including one about how God is always in our presence even if we don't always feel him. A verse they studied was “Matthew 6:25-26. It says “Therefore I tell you: Don’t worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Isn’t life more than food and the body more than clothing? Consider the birds of the sky: They don’t sow or reap or gather into barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Aren’t you worth more than they?”. They also did worship and sang together at the end of the sermons. Mr. Bitter had a great time leading this club and said his favorite part was “allowing students to approach me with questions about life and religion”. His future plans for the club are to help more students grow interested and grow the club as a whole. I can’t wait for the club to expand and prosper in the future years to come.

Key Club

Key Club meets on Tuesdays during flex around 12pm to discuss the plans of the week and what they will be doing.Key club is a group of students willing to serve the school in any way possible and to create better school spirit. For Key club’s upcoming event they will be hosting a coffee fundraiser this month, ending on the 12th. Girls Lacrosse

This year the girls lacrosse team has fought hard for their season. They faced several challenges this year, with a new coach, late start, and that of a limited roster. However, they didn't allow any of those challenges to discourage them. Recently they played Lake Wales highschool; (A school with an almost undefeated record) and played hard against the highlanders. Although they did not come out on top with a loss of 22-2 they were able to experience a new kind of competitive lacrosse that will push the team to prove themselves and strive to be a future powerhouse in the girls lacrosse scene. A player that should be recognized from the game is #4 Makailey Teague. Makailey won several draws and even scored one of the goals in that game. We can't wait to see what these girls have to show us next year in the 2024 season. -Zach Craig

 Weightlifting

Our Boy’s Weightlifting team had their district tournament on Thursday, March 30. The boys went against McKeel Academy, Land at the Lakes Academy, LCS, and New Dimensions. The boys started lifting at 6 pm and finished around like 8:30 pm. When the boys attended the award ceremony they ended up getting Runner-up for the team overall for the traditional lifting category. We would like to congratulate Zachary Wagle, JC Foerster, and Devon Widener for accomplishing the title of District Champions in their weight class. I spoke with Zachary Wagle, a member of the weightlifting team. I asked him, “What was the highlight of yesterday’s meet?” He replied with, I enjoy getting a new PR. He says that his goal is to get a new PR every meet and he usually meets that goal. I also asked him, “What is your favorite part about this sport?” He said, "I like winning, it makes me proud of myself and my teammates.” Today I also spoke with Michelle Foerster, a mother of one of the lifters. I asked her what her favorite part of the meets are, she replied with, “My favorite part is watching my son do something he loves and seeing the support from the team”. The boys are now off to regionals on April, 7 in Ocala. -Payton Jones

                                                            Softball

The girl’s softball team has been working hard and they have been doing a great job so far this season. For example, on the 23rd, our girls played against Davenport 5 to 25. Our team has been able to achieve a record of 0-5, our notable players being Mariah Fuller with a 0.667 batting average, Kristina Hendershot with a 1.000 on base percentage, Rena Newton with a 1.000 fielding percentage and Riley Grier with 6 hits.

While watching the girls play during this season, guests and watchers feel lots of excitement as the players score. One of these guests happened to be Nicole Harris, so I asked how she thought the girls played. She answered, “They were learning and getting the hang of it”. I asked her based on the game she watched, how does she think the rest of the season is going to go? She replied, “I think it’ll go well and that they’ll grow more confident”.

If you want to feel the same excitement that Nicole felt, you can watch our girls play on March 28th, against Mulberry at Mulberry! Go spartans! -Nylah Farmer

April Fools By: Alieen

April 1st is known as April Fools Day." April Fools Day consists of practical jokes and hoaxes. People come up with different funny ways to prank someone. I got to talk to Alanys Santana about their experience with April fools. I asked what the best April Fools prank they had ever done was. She replied "I baked a cake and covered it with toothpaste instead of frosting and gave it to my family". She also said she brought a dozen donuts to work, stuffed them with mayo, and gave them to her friends. I also got the opportunity to talk to Tyson Herrin about the worst prank someone pulled on them. "I had someone put a bucket of water over my door, and when I opened the door, the water fell on me."

Good Friday By: Brooke

Before all the Easter candy and the bunny full of love comes out to celebrate we have Good Friday. Good Friday is an annual event celebrated the Friday before every Easter Sunday. This holiday brings many people together for food, fun, and worship!

Good Friday was made to celebrate the crucifixion of Jesus and his 3 day rise to victory over death. Jesus was nailed to a cross and buried to never be heard from again. As this process took place Jesus said, “Father forgive them for what they know not what they do”. Everyone was in so much shock and disbelief that they started to follow him and watch him perform miracles all over the world. This led to the start of christianity and the faith that Jesus would always be there for those that wanted and accepted him.

People do many different things in celebration of good friday such as prayer, worship services, fasting, and more. People can be found celebrating in churches, recreational buildings, and even in their own home. If you are not religious, this is most likely just another Friday but to some people it is much more.

Siblings Day By: Michaela

International Siblings Day is celebrated on April 10th. The American holiday was created in 1995 by Claudia Evart, who lost her brother and sister when she was a young girl. After learning the importance of siblings in our life, she started the event to honor the memory of her brothers. On April 10, Claudia made the decision to recognize Lisette's birthday. The holiday's aim is to raise awareness of the importance of siblings in people's lives. The goal of the festival is to help individuals in realizing the value of their siblings and in expressing their appreciation for them. I spoke with Kirianna Cox and asked the following : What is it like having siblings? She replied by saying “ I enjoy having siblings, however they can be aggravating and annoying.” On the other hand I asked Regan Barron  the same question she replied with “ It's boring I wish I did have a sibling but it teached me how to be more independent”. I followed up with If you had a sibling would you rather be the oldest or the youngest She said Youngest So I could ask them for help.

To summarize, having a sibling has its advantages and disadvantages but there is never a dull moment.

Earth Month By: Issac

Earth Month takes place during April every year. It’s a time to raise environmental awareness and create consciousness around the issues that affect mother nature during this time of crisis. Every April, leaders, and environmental activists from all over the world join hands to create sustainable development and offer climate solutions, to minimize our carbon footprint and prevent further harm to our planet’s natural resources. It’s increasingly important to observe this month as Earth starts to unravel the harmful effects of climate change which not only poses a threat to our existence but is irreversibly damaging all forms of life. Earth Month started as a movement to resist the abusive and negligent consumption of leaded gas by Americans. By 1990, Earth Month became a global event after 200 million participants from 141 countries joined the initiative. By 1992, the United Nations became actively involved too which further enhanced the organization’s visibility. Today, Earth Month is widely recognized as one of the most important month-long observances in the world.
