Bad Auditions By Bad Actors

Bad Auditions By Bad Actors is a comedic play that is based on different kinds of actors auditioning to be either Romeo or Juliet. The play goes through about 10 different actors, including an actor acting like a cat, a diva, and so many unique but sometimes weird actors. The theater two class had picked this play in the beginning of this school year and has been working on it ever since. On November 17th, the curtains dropped and the show began. It was intriguing to find out how a method actor auditions and how annoying acting coaches can be at times.

Interviews

I interviewed an actor from Bad Auditions By Bad Actors and this is how it went.

Reporter- “How do you think B.A.B.A. went, in terms of being the first ever Theater two production?”

Ariana Alamo- “I think it went really well knowing that we dedicated a lot of time into rehearsals and a lot of us have struggled a bit with mesmerizing lines but it all came through really nicely and i can say i'm definitely proud of us, we have truly became a family over time.

Reporter- “Nice! What are you most excited about for the rest of the year in this class?”

Ariana Alamo - “The next performance we are going to put on is incredibly cool and I feel like it will be exciting for everyone including the audience.

Reporter- “That is so exciting, well awesome performance and I can not wait for more!”

I interviewed an audience member and this is also how it went.

Reporter- “How did you enjoy the production? What was your favorite part?”

Zach Craig- “I enjoyed it, it was a pleasant surprise. My favorite part was the scene where Meg came out with her acting coach.”

Reporter- “Very nice, I am glad you enjoyed it! On the other hand, who was your favorite actor?”

Zach Craig- “Roger was my favorite actor.”

Reporter- “Haha, he was very funny and Ariana was really good at acting like she could care less.”

National Honor Society

The National Honors Society is a club here at DHS that holds some of the smartest kids at school. While being led by Ms. Mallon, they learn to use and improve a number of life skills, such as compassion, leadership, academics, honesty, and many others. They often hold events and take opportunities that help them practice these skills. Recently in November, there was an induction for NHS help at DHS. An induction is when members of a group welcome the new members. The students here at school put forth their best effort to model all of what the NHS is, and they do a very good job. -Aniaya Gonzalez

Key Club

Our Key Club meets every Tuesday during flex to discuss their new ideas with each other. This week they’ve discussed the PB&J Marathon and donated sandwiches to The Mission, Winter Haven which is a homeless shelter.  As well as helping Paws rescue, an animal shelter that seeks to get rescue animals adopted by loving families.

I asked Ylaissa Zapata what her experience was during the PB&J Marathon and future events for Key Club. When asked what her favorite thing about the marathon was, Ylaissa states “I love it, and I love helping everyone who comes”.

Environmentalist Club

The Environmental Club is a club that focuses on ways to improve the environment. The Environmental Club does exciting projects throughout the year. I talked with Naomi Javier, who has been a part of the club for a month. Naomi says that the club is thinking about adding a garden to the school. I think that adding a garden would be a great idea. I asked Naomi what she enjoys most about the club and what activities they do. She said she enjoys talking with others about nature and ways that they can help the environment. She also stated that she loves hearing other people's ideas and the ability to be creative in the club. The club meets the second half of flex on Wednesdays in Mx.Kitchens room. If you are interested in becoming a member you may go to Mx. Kitchen’s class and talk to the President. She will be more than happy to speak with those that are interested. -Janiyah Cole

Bible Study Club

Today I was able to talk to Ariana Alamo from Bible Study Club and ask her  some questions about the club. She actively attends and helps out with the club and this is what she had to say. First I asked her “What do you like most about the Bible Study Club?” and she replied with “What I like most about Bible Study is that everyone who comes to bible study engages and learns a little bit more about the teachings of God”. I also asked “If you could change one thing about Bible Study Club, what would it be and why?” and she said “If I could change one thing about bible study it would be to add more hands-on activities to help one learn more from the perspective of what that day's teaching is about”. Lastly I asked her “What are your hopes for Bible Study Club in the future?” in which she responded, “My hopes for bible study in the future is that when myself and Debora graduate someone will take in our steps and keep the club going, not only because it is something we did this year and the previous year before this one but because it is little by little planting a seed in everyone's lives”. It was super fun interviewing Ariana and getting more insight on the bible study club and make sure you go to the club every Thursday during the 2nd half of flex in Mr. Bitter’s room.  - Regan Barron

Executive Council

With Fall Fest over and Homecoming now coming up, the Executive Council is ready to plan new exciting new things for our campus! Starting December 12th, DHS students will be able to participate in Winter Spirit Week. Monday will be class colors day, with freshmen wearing green, sophomores wearing light blue, juniors wearing white, and seniors wearing red. Tuesday is elf vs reindeer day, with students being able to dress up as either an elf or a reindeer. Next, is White Lie Wednesday, where students wear a white shirt and write a white lie. For example, you can write “I'm tall” if you think you are short. Thursday is pajama day and Friday is ugly sweater day.

With the upcoming events for campus, I asked Sarah Dusrajh, one of the heads of the homecoming committee for her opinion of the upcoming spirit week and what she is most excited about regarding homecoming. When asked what her favorite day of spirit week was, Sarah replied, “Elf vs Reindeer is personally my favorite because not only is it something new, but it also is cute.”

With spirit week happening on December 12th before Winter Break, the Executive Council is also planning to have Homecoming on January 14th. When asked what is her favorite thing about Homecoming, Sarah states, “Homecoming is one of the most fun events on campus. Besides other stuff like pep rallies and spirit week, attending Homecoming is a magical event. With our Homecoming being Enchanted Forest this year, I really hope other people are able to have an unforgettable and magical experience on the 14th”.

The Executive Council is also looking for volunteers for Homecoming setup. If you are interested in earning volunteer hours on January 13th after school, please be on the lookout for a volunteer google sign-up form in your grade-level classroom.  -Ylaissa Zapata

Anatomy

Anatomy and Physiology is an elective where students can learn about the different components of the human body and it is being taught by Ms.O’donnell. This elective is usually taken by seniors but in this case Emilly Dos Reis a sophomore this year is taking the class.I was able to speak with her and ask her a few questions.I asked her what is something interesting you have learned from this class as of now Emilly feels that the most interesting things she's learned is that “babies have more bones than adults!”.I also asked her what are you looking forward to in this class and what do you hope to take away from this class. She's looking forward to “learning more about how the human body works” and she “hopes to apply this knowledge into a future career”.This class may seem a little intimidating but it is a great course that anyone can honestly try to take.

Creative Writing

Creative Writing is a form of writing where you can express your passion.

Mrs. Hess is the class teacher of these courses. She teaches courses in creative writing 1,2, and 3. And today I asked her about the lesson she teaches and her perspectives in this interview. The responses were thorough and efficient. Mrs. Hess was hired at this school which they offered her to teach creative writing 1 and 2. Her students asked for another creative writing class , which she looked into. So since creative writing 3 is now a developed curriculum she is happy how everything turned out. Mrs.Hess best thing about teaching this class is learning various genres and how to apply them to writing. Mrs. Hess enjoys learning alongside her students. She is surprised by how they display their stories when having the same prompt. What they are also reviewing right now is Nonfiction, Fiction, and Poetry in Creative Class 1 and 2. They cover both fantasy and horror on their fiction board. As for creative writing 3 majority of the class is a fiction unit, and their genres are also specialized.  The genres covered in this lesson include fractured fairy tales and supernatural horror. As for right now they are discussing steampunk literature. What's more, she has never been happier when teaching a class because of the students' ability to read their stories aloud, how entertaining they became, and the reactions they showed. For the kids that want to pursue this career her advice is  “ Never be afraid of thinking outside the box and trying something new. Also, read stories that you want to write. Reading is the best thing you can do if you want to be a writer’’.

-Yslande Fenelon

Psychology

Psychology is a class opened to upperclassmen  taught by Mrs. Attinger. She teaches this class for her 2nd and 5th period. It’s a class that studies the mind and focuses on human behavior. I interviewed two students; Jake Talbert from 2nd period and Natalie Kirk from 5th period. When asked how they feel about this class they both agreed that the class was interesting and Jake added that he likes what he is learning and the teacher is fantastic as well. Natilie says that she doesn't know if she wants to pick a career path that has to deal with psychology, however Jake recommends this class since it has to do with social work, and it is helpful for a better understanding of the mind of others. Something Jake found interesting in the class currently is how the brain works and parts of the brain. This class is highly recommended for others that might want to follow this career path.   -Trista Jenkins

Forensic Science

Forensic science is a class where students learn the investigation of fingerprinting, ballistics, trace evidence, poison and much more. I got to talk to Mrs. O’donnell who has been teaching Forensic Science for 12 years! I asked what advice she would give to anyone who is thinking about pursuing Forensic Science. She said “ If someone wants to pursue Forensic Science I would tell them to first decide what part of Forensic Science they are interested in. Most people think of a crime scene investigator when they think Forensic Science but most Forensic Scientists work  in labs with the evidence. I would encourage them to seek out someone in the field to ask questions and guide them. I would also encourage them to find out how to get an invitation to the national forensic science academy at Quantico Virginia.” For more information about that you can visit  https://www.dfs.virginia.gov/training/forensic-training/forensic-science-academy/ ~Alyssa Innocent

Cheer

At the last football game of the season the cheerleaders gave their all to encourage and root for our football team's prestigious senior night. During the event they celebrated the senior football players with signs and posters as well as their own senior cheerleaders. As co-captain, Yeitza Reyes says her fondest memories with the cheer team has been “when we are at practice and someone says something dumb or the way we react to things that happen and all of the jokes that we have and also during game day when something happens and just having fun with them”.  The cheers that the team uses the most are a variety of basketball, football, or spirit cheers for the crowd. Examples include “Miss it”, “Hype” and “Spirit” respectively.

As Co-captain Yeitza takes on leadership characteristics to further her position and inspire her cheerleaders to work hard and do their best. She says as a cheerleader “ It has affected my life greatly because it has not only given me something fun to do on Fridays or after school but also let me meet new people, make lifelong friendships and has helped me with building a team and just having fun at school doing something I love”. With the end of the Football season the cheerleaders are preparing to enter the basketball season, where they will practice a variety of new cheers for our basketball team and show their Spartan pride..

Girls Soccer

The Discovery girls’ soccer team has officially started and the girls are eager for their season. On Friday November 11th, the girls played Haines City High school and Hollie Kimble, #22 on the team, scored the first goal of the season. The girls unfortunately lost this game but they all gave it their all and they are ready to continue to give it 100% every time they step out on the field. I also spoke with the team manager Tyson Herrin, and asked him a few questions. I asked him how many years he has been managing this team for? He has been managing this team along with the girls lacrosse team for two years. I also asked him what his favorite part about managing this team was. He said, “getting to interact and build relationships with the players is my favorite part.”   - Payton Jones

 Boys Basketball

On Monday, November 14th, boys varsity basketball had their first game against Foundation Christian Academy. They won with the final score being 67-54. I asked varsity player Lazarous Mwelwa how he felt about last night's game. He responded saying, “It felt good to pick up from last year with our winning culture. I was able to find my teammates and they were able to hit their shots overall, it meshed well together.” I also proceeded to ask him what he’s most looking forward to this season since he’s in his senior year and he replied, “I'm looking forward most to winning games with my teammates and making a run in the state playoffs”. Congratulations to the boys basketball team for their first win!

 Girls Weightlifting

On November 17, the Discovery Girls Weightlifting went to a competition at Auburndale High School. The girls got to compete against a multitude of schools to really test and push themselves. The team had some personal records, (Nicole Harris with a new clean and jerk weight of 120 lbs  and a new snatch weight of 85 lbs, Adriana Rodriguez  hit a new weight in clean and jerk of 85, and Josephina Jeffers hit a new weight of 75 lbs for bench), that made the night so much more special for everyone. In this sport it is mostly a personal game and you compete against your last weight. It isn’t about winning and that is what most of the girls really enjoy about doing this. The girls get to make these memories with each other and get to cheer each other on. Everyone becomes a family because no matter what happens during each lift, there will always be someone to lift your spirits. It is an outlet to what is going on beyond the doors of the weight room. You’re able to make a personal relationship with yourself and understand the things you are able to do.    -Nicole Harris

Christmas By: Brooke

Happy December! Who’s ready for Christmas? I know I am, and today I spoke with sophomore Mason Robinson who says he is too. I asked why the day was special for him and he said, “it means a lot, I love being on vacation and waking up to presents under the tree.” I also asked if there were any special traditions in his family and he said yes, his family always puts an angel on top of their tree together on Christmas Eve.

Observed for almost 2,000 years, Christmas occurs annually on December 25th and is filled with a fun day of cheer. The origin of Christmas actually comes from Pagan and Roman cultural traditions! They, like many people also celebrated the birth of Jesus but since nobody knew the official birthdate they adopted the 25th of december. Traditions of decorating in red and green also originate here because the pagans would decorate in preparation for the spring. It was said that if you decorated well you would have a flourishing spring season. Fun fact, Christmas was actually banned in early America because it was a Pagan tradition but was later named an official American holiday in 1870.

The day is to celebrate the birth of Jesus but it is also a day that celebrates love, peace, family, and strength. Plus it can really be celebrated however you and your families like it. It is a holiday purely meant to spend time and make memories with those we love. Also don’t forget about the 2022 Christmas specials; ABC’s Christmas movies will be playing all month long, CBS holiday special featuring Ruldolph and Frosty, 24 hour Christmas movie marathon on TNT, and the annual Christmas day parade at Disney’s Magic Kingdom. Plus catch Spirited, The Noel Diary, and Guardians of the Galaxy (Holiday Special) out in theaters now. Merry Christmas Spartans! -Brooklyn Holt

Boxing Day By: Aileen

Boxing Day is a national holiday in Great Britain, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand that is celebrated December 26th the day after Christmas. According to NationalToday.com Boxing day is a day where the upper class gives gifts to the lower class. Boxing Day came to be in 1833 when lower class/servants and tradespeople would work really hard to make Christmas perfect for the wealthy. Krampus By: Anya

Krampus was thought to have been part of pagan rituals for the winter solstice. According to legend, he is the son of Hell, the Norse god of the underworld. With the spread of Christianity, Krampus became associated with Christmas—despite efforts by the Catholic church to ban him. This folklore began in 12th century Germany, but has stretched as far as the United States when immigrants brought stories of a half man half goat creature stealing bad children so he could devour them in his lair. The creature and St. Nicholas are said to arrive on the evening of December 5. He is the devilish companion of St. Nicholas. Krampus is believed to have originated in Germany, and his name derives from the German word Krampen, which means “claw.”
