October Spirit Week

Happy October Spartans, or shall I say Barbies? We have many exciting events planned this month, including our October Spirit Week, which ties in with our annual fall festival.

Our Spirit Week will begin Monday, October 23rd, with showing off all those old vines and memes we all know and love. Then we will have a dynamic duo/squad-up day where you and your buddies can come dressed up as such groups as the Powerpuff Girls, Alvin and the Chipmunks, or duos like Bonnie and Clyde, or even Peanut Butter and Jelly. On Wednesday, you wear pink, of course, for Barbie and Ken. Give us your best Barbie and Ken outfit!

Have you ever wanted to come to school dressed as your teacher to make them laugh? Now you can come on Thursday dressed as your favorite teacher. Finally, Friday is Decades Day; each grade level has a certain decade. Freshmen will be showing off their flare jeans and peace signs by being in the 70s. Sophomores will have to pull out those leg warmers and parachute pants to become the 80s. Those bucket hats and overalls will convert our juniors into the 90s. And finally, our seniors will be the hip and cool 2000s, showing off those Y2K classes and juicy tracksuits. Get in the spirit. Dress up and have fun!

Principle of Entrepreneurship

(Jason Gonzales 12th, Justin Davis 12th, and Blake Conner 11th)

Mrs. Camus has been an integral part of our outstanding DHS staff team for two years. Among the elective classes available at Discovery High School is Principles of Entrepreneurship, one of the two courses taught by Mrs. Camus. This elective provides students with insights into the fundamentals of launching a business and applying key business concepts. Within the course, students have the opportunity to develop their business ideas and bring them to life, learning about the various challenges and successes associated with owning and operating a business in a collaborative environment. Moreover, successful completion of the course allows students to earn an ESB (Entrepreneurship and Small Business) certificate by passing the exam. Mrs. Camus finds joy in teaching this class as it enables her to assist students in unlocking their creativity and teamwork skills, fostering not only their success as entrepreneurs but also preparing them for the challenges of the real world as young adults.

I was able to spend time with Mrs. Camus and her class during 5th period. They are working on business concept presentations for the businesses they created. Jason Gonzales, Justin Davis, and Blake Conner (JJB Evil Incorporated) are students in this class that are presenting their business idea. They plan on running a section or booth at Fall Fest (one of our very fun events at DHS) where they will be selling Halloween themed necklaces to the people that attend.

Staff Interview

It’s officially a spooky season, the time of year where we carve pumpkins, eat too much candy, and watch our favorite scary movies. I talked to Ms.Arpino about her feelings about Halloween. Ms. Arpino's Has been with DHS for two years now, as a math teacher.  During our conversation I learned about how she celebrates Halloween. As an adult without children, she mentioned that she prefers her evenings outside and passing out candy to the kids in her community. She also said she likes doing truck or treats where she decorates her car and passes candy out to kids. I also asked what her all time favorite horror movie was. She replied “my favorite horror movies would have to be the Halloween series. It's always my go to this time of year”. I’m sure many can agree that the Halloween series is the best for the spooky season. I also asked Ms.Arpino what she was planning on dressing up for Halloween. She replied “I do plan on dressing up but I haven’t decided on what I’m going to be but be sure to stop by my room to see”. I hope everyone has a great and safe spooky season!

 2D Art

The humanities, and more specifically, art, play a vital role in the development of young minds. An essential contributor to this process is Mrs. Russe, a 2D Art teacher and one of the many dedicated  educators at DHS. With 16 years of experience teaching K-12 students, Mrs. Russe has been an educator since 2008, instructing in various art forms such as drawing, painting, ceramics, and digital media.

Mrs. Russe finds great fulfillment in guiding her students' artistic journeys, stating, "It's very fulfilling to be part of my students' artistic journey and watch them develop as young artists." She particularly enjoys witnessing those 'aha!' moments when students grasp new techniques or concepts, considering it a rewarding experience to see their artistic skills and confidence grow over time. Mrs. Russe appreciates the creativity and individual perspectives each student brings to their work.

The 2D Art curriculum, under Mrs. Russe's guidance, focuses on developing students' creative expression and technical skills in two-dimensional art forms, including drawing, painting, printmaking, and digital art. Students engage in exploring various media and techniques, currently learning about different art movements and styles to broaden their understanding. Mrs. Russe's goal is to provide students with a robust foundation in the elements of art and principles of design while nurturing their artistic vision, problem-solving abilities, and critical thinking skills.

Chorus

Mr. Bitter, a dedicated chorus teacher, is passionate about his work, and this marks his third-year teaching chorus at DHS. Inquiring about his affinity for chorus, Mr. Bitter expressed, “I love music, and I love to enable students to discover their passion for it. They have the ability to find their voice and collaborate to create something beautiful.” He appreciates the chorus because he believes students should feel liberated with their voices. Mr. Bitter initiated teaching chorus at DHS when the program was nonexistent, recognizing the demand from students for such an offering.

In Mr. Bitter's class this week, the focus will be on refining their current repertoire and introducing new pieces for their upcoming winter concert scheduled for December 7th. When asked about his strengths as a teacher, Mr. Bitter emphasized, “One of my strengths as a teacher is understanding my students. I make it a point to learn who they are and how they operate. It’s my responsibility to meet them at their level and teach them as effectively as I can.” Mr. Bitter's dedication and focus on understanding his students contribute to his effectiveness as a chorus teacher. Undoubtedly, he serves as an inspiring figure, encouraging his students to embrace the freedom of their voices.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

By: Trista Jenkins

We can all agree that October is one of the best months with the fall decor, cooler weather, and Halloween. On that note, October is also the month of breast cancer awareness. Breast cancer is cancer that forms in the cells of the breasts. It is the most common cancer that forms in women however in rare cases men can also be victims of this awful disease. Symptoms may include a lump, bloody discharge from the nipple, and changes in the shape or texture of the nipple or breast. Only 4% of women diagnosed with breast cancer in the U.S. are younger than 40 so it is not as common for women our age however something that everyone should be aware of as we get older.

Lung cancer is the number 1 leading cause of death in women with breast cancer right behind that leading cause. Only 1 in 39 women die of breast cancer however about 240,000 cases of breast cancer are diagnosed in women and about 2,100 in men each year in the United States. Shocking factors are African American women have a higher rate of death from breast cancer than all other women. But, how do we support breast cancer awareness? As known, each cancer has a specific colored ribbon that corresponds with the disease. Breast cancer has the color of the pink ribbon so, a main factor to support is WEAR PINK! Studies shown in the recent months of when the Barbie movie was released. In only 3 weeks of the ‘Barbie’ movie premiere statistics proves that more people wore more pink than they have during breast cancer awareness in the past few years. So therefore, we will wear more pink this year to really represent the thousands of people suffering from this horrible disease. Other ways that you can support if you have no pink in your closet is educating yourself, even if it’s just reading this article, volunteering, and making sure you and others are aware. A little bit of effort can go a long way, so make sure to take this time to support those in need, and recognize those fighting the toughest battle.

Today, September 20th, 2023, I interviewed one of our creative and leading seniors of 2024. This is Olivia Rose, a senior at Discovery High School. Olivia is the President of the Performing Arts Club, an editor in the Yearbook, and a member of the Executive Council. As I interviewed Olivia I asked her some questions about her senior year. One of the questions I asked was what senior event she is most excited about this year, she replied, “I am most excited for Senior Field Day, Prom, and Graduation. But honestly I am excited for all of them!”. The next question I asked was, how was she staying organized and prepared this year? She replied, “I am staying organized this year by managing my time. I have a lot on my plate this year and it's very important for me to keep things on track”. Many people have different opinions on their high school years so I figured I would ask Olivia about hers. Olivia had a very good answer to this question, “My opinion on my senior year is that it will be awesome because our class pushes for what we want and we all want to make this year memorable. So a lot of new things are happening this year like Senior sunrise and sunset. My past high school years have been alright but I just wished that I would have cared more throughout my years. If I could give any upcoming high schooler any advice, it is that freshman year is your most important year, so try and don't screw up because that will affect you all 4 years”.  Olivia is definitely someone I would recommend to go to for high school advice. Shout out to Olivia for being one of our outgoing seniors of 2024!

Volleyball

On September 21st both JV and Varsity kept their ground during their match with Frostproof. They really are showing teamwork and dedication during this season. I asked Kyla Newton #5 on Junior varsity how she feels about the team and she stated “I feel like since it’s the first season for me, we’ll definitely grow throughout this season”. You can tell just how excited she is to grow with her teammates! I then asked the varsity Captain Kendall Smith how it feels for this to be her last season at DHS and her comment will touch your hearts. “It feels sad for this to be my last high school season. Time flies during the season; I really don't want it to end.

At the same time, however, I'm glad to be able to have fun with my teammates. After high school, I plan to play volleyball in my free time and hopefully be an assistant coach for next season.” Her dreams and goals after High School are inspiring and as her fellow Spartans, we should all cheer her on!  Pictured top right varsity comes out with a bang! Showing off all the amazing players including Kaydence waters #6, Juliana Williams #10, Hollie Kimble #2, Mianette Ruiz Cosby #7, and Kayden Clay #8.

Bowling

For the month of October, we took a look behind the scenes at the bowling team and everything they have worked through. So far they have had several meets at both Bowlero in South Lakeland as well as at Orange Bowl near the Lakeland Square Mall. With these meets it is evident that this team is a force to be reckoned with. When bowling the team plays three different games and with each game, they continue to improve and get into their groove with insight from their coach Mr. Mccord finishing their third game with the best score yet. On September 21 they had a meet at Bowlero and Braxton bowled 194 points. He improved his game as the matches went by and he states that he will work harder as they get deeper into the season. For our player spotlight, we want to look at Braxton Johnson, Braxton has played sports here for 2 years has been a bowler for 6 years, and would bowl in Amateur leagues with his dad. Braxton says in order to keep his composure each time he steps up to bowl ” I just blast my music to stop any chance of me getting overwhelmed or overthinking it” and in order to continue to improve his game “I ask my dad for advice, he's been a bowler for over 40 years now so whenever I need help I go to him”. Braxton is one of the top bowlers on the team given his experience and continues to push his own limits and achieve greater things for himself and his teammates. There will be meets on October 5th and October 12th at Bowlero in Lakeland and will take place at 3 pm.

Cross Country

In their recent cross country meet at Ridge Community High School on September 13, Discovery High School's team demonstrated exceptional prowess, surpassing expectations and setting a positive tone for the season. Notably, the girls' team made an impactful debut, with Emma Quintero expressing a sense of self-achievement after completing her first meet. She acknowledged areas for improvement, specifically in pacing and stride length. John S. emerged as a standout, securing 8th place overall and leading the Discovery team to an impressive 2nd place in the meet's team rankings. The entire team showcased resilience and dedication, foreshadowing a promising season ahead. As Discovery High School's cross country team continues to exceed expectations, the community eagerly anticipates their continued success and growth on the course.

Cheer

The cheer team had tryouts September 6th, after the tryouts the cheer team now consists of 20 members including the coach Mrs.Ocasio. For this year the team is looking forward to making the team feel like a family and having fun as one. At this time the team is getting ready to compete for the first time in the district Cheer competition that will take place on December 14. I asked the coach some fun facts about the team and she said ‘I love the girls because they are like daughters to me. God gave me boys but as a cheer coach I have the opportunity to have daughters. I have fun in every practice and I enjoy teaching them routines for cheer and dance. I'm looking forward to this year because I believe in the girls that we will have a great performance in the competition this year”. We can't wait to see the competition and the results as well as the fabulous jib they will do at our basketball games -Yahir Henandez
