How does your family celebrate the holidays?
How does your family celebrate the holidays?
- "Christmas is my favorite holiday. We have a family gathering on Christmas Eve. We have a typical Puerto-Rican Christmas Dinner and just talk about everything.
- We also celebrate Three Kings’ Day, also known as Epiphany or Dia de los Reyes Magos, which is a celebration of the three kings who brought gifts to Jesus when he was born. It is a long held Latin American tradition. According to Latin culture, January 6th saw three different men visiting Jesus – Melchor (representing Europe), Gaspar (representing Arabia) and Balthazar (representing Africa). They brought gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh respectively. On the eve of Three Kings Day (known as Vispera de Reyes), January 5, children leave out candy and small gifts for the kings, and a box of straw for their camels. In exchange, the children are given gifts by the Three Kings the next day January 6."

It is usually celebrated sometime between December 20th and the 23rd, but this year it will be on December 21st. Season's Greetings Spartans!
Season's Greetings Spartans!
As the weather gets colder and the season’s start changing again, we remind all students to stay positive to finish off the first semester strong. Before the Winter Break/Holiday starts, it is important to remember how this season is a special time to get together with friends and family. Activities that can be accomplished during this holiday break include helping others in need, baking special treats, learning holiday songs, seeing holiday movies, and writing about what is meaningful and special in life. We want to also remind all students to once again practice having a positive mindset during the holidays amid the pandemic and to stay safe throughout the month and break. Below are some reminders and important information about this month’s activities and events. A variety of clubs are open to all students right now, and we encourage students to become involved in these clubs to practice collaboration, creativity, critical-thinking, and communication skills. For more information on everything DHS related please visit http://discoveryhighschool.org/

E-sports is one of our largest clubs on campus with almost 70 members. They compete professionally and try to win money for the players as well as our school. They play 5 different games in this club: Call of Duty Modern Warfare, Rocket League, Rainbow Six Siege, Super Smash Bros, and Overwatch. This idea has been brewing in Mr. Phillippe’s mind for a while now, but once other schools started to compete he couldn’t wait to start it at DHS.

Weightlifting, or comprehensive fitness, is a relatively small class with only 5 students this year. Students within this class are typically athletes at DHS but it is by no means a requirement. The main focuses within this class include: agility, coordination, reaction time, proper lifting technique, and explosive movements. Each day in the class they do something different. Mondays are dedicated to research and planning workouts that work best for the student. The remaining two days are split between the weight room or in the gym/outside. Comprehensive fitness is a great class for students who are athletes at DHS or are looking to get in better shape with proper technique. Any questions should be directed towards Coach Thompson.

- We would like to congratulate our Spartan athletes of the month of November: Anthony Ballard and Trent Grotijan. These athletes have been nominated for their outstanding demonstration of leadership on and off the field. These athletes were nominated by players, spectators, and their coaches for their hard work and dedication football:
Coach John Livingston nominated Trent Grotijan because “he is the leader of our team and does extremely well in school”. Coach John Livingston nominated Anthony Ballard because “he is a phenomenal athlete on the field and just as impressive in the classroom”. Just last game against Cocoa Beach Ballard had 8 receptions for 276 yards, 3 touchdowns, and an interception while playing defense. Grotijan was able to throw 4 touchdown passes.

While it is important to be great on the field, both of these athletes have demonstrated they are more than just players on the field. Both of these athletes deserve the title of Spartan Athlete of the Month, and we hope to continue to see these athletes succeed on and off the field in their future

- As we wrap up our fall sports season with the last boys football game against Poinciana on Friday November 20th we want to give them a big shout out for a great season!
The boys had a lot to overcome this season, with covid-19 and the loss of players from last season. The boys took a big win against Cocoa Beach (48-7) on November 13 and played great. We wanted to congratulate the seniors this season and wish them the best of luck in their future with the sport. As a lot of football players also play other sports we look forward to keeping up with their successes in different areas.

They are putting forth effort to make their school proud. We asked a few questions to a certain player, Seth Mathews. Seth answered a series of questions about being on the court this season. We asked him who he was most excited to play this year, he responded with Auburndale High School. We also asked him who supported him the most while he plays, Seth responded with his mom. They all are very confident in the team they are becoming. The boys are advancing their skills and are super excited to play this season. No matter the outcome of the season, they will continue to train and stay a family. It’s not just about playing the sport, it is about becoming strong individuals as well as becoming a closer group of kids. We are rooting for the Spartans and hope to see them become successful

- This year the girls are ready for the handles on the court, they have been working non-stop on perfecting their every move and are ready to put it in action. The girls are feeling really confident about this year's season, believing they will top last years and they definitely will.
We took time to ask the girls a few questions about how they are feeling about competing against schools, they are most excited about playing against Tenoroc and Auburndale so we will be counting on them to bring home a great victory. The girls are greatly motivated as well this year, “We motivate each other as a team, as a family” says Nerlin, and their family has been growing throughout the year while welcoming new members to the team. They are all more than just the Girls Spartan Basketball Team, they are a strong group of dedicated ladies who will work together to blow the competition away. As Coach Marriot once said, “Treat every game or practice like it is your last.”
