National Honor Society

The National Honor Society (NHS) is a nationwide organization that recognizes high school students for their academic achievements and demonstrates scholarship, leadership, service, and character. Here, at Discovery and advised by Mrs.Mallon, NHS members met on December 1st during FLEX to discuss and listen to candidates who wished to be elected into officer positions on the board. Each local NHS chapter has its own board consisting of a president, vice-president, secretary, and treasurer. However, every chapter in NHS has the option to have other unique officer positions such as a publisher or a parliamentarian.

The DHS National Honor Society executive board consists of 6 officer positions: president, vice-president, secretary, treasurer, and two at-large positions. Candidates for these positions introduced themselves to the club and gave a brief explanation of their strengths before votes would be cast. I talked with Gavin Devries, a candidate who was running for the treasurer position of the club. A Treasurer for NHS handles membership fees, coordinates fundraisers  (such as Crush for a Crush), and attends all meetings of the executive board and general membership. When asked why he wanted to run for the position, Gavin said “[i]m the current treasurer for Key Club, and since I have the experience handling money and keeping track of finances, I believe I am a great candidate for the position for NHS as well”.

With the help of Adelayda Trevino Hernandez on the original day of elections and Chase Derico and Gavrin Devries during the secretary runoff, Mrs.Mallon tabulated the votes and the DHS chapter elected the following officers:

President:  Diamond Llanos

Vice President: Kamila Mercado

Secretary: Ylaissa Zapata

Treasurer: Gavin DeVries

At-Large Board Member: Chase Derico and Kendall Smith

If you are interested in knowing more about NHS and how to join, please make sure to ask Mrs.Mallon during FLEX. NHS meets every first Thursday of the month and plans to make a positive impact on DHS later this school year with fundraisers such as Crush for a Crush and other things coming up next year after winter break. - Ylaissa Zapata

Environmentalist Club

The green team here at DHS has been making progress within their goals. They hope to launch their garden this month, january 2023, which will be located beside the red barn by the humanities building. Although there are no out of school activities as it is now, Mx. Kitchens has stated that there are possibilities for this in the future. They have also developed a new logo. The green team is hoping to start more fundraisers and get T-shirts made. The green team holds their weekly meetings on Wednesdays, during flex. If you are interested in joining the club, all are welcome. The google classroom code is 6pe6q7w. -Aniaya Gonzalez

Art History

Art History class is about the study of art throughout the years and its beauty to enlighten us with anything around us. This class is being taught by Mrs Kendrick, our newest teacher of discovery highschool. Art History was an optional choice for Mrs. Kendrick  so she took it,  her reason upon this was because  her son loves art and she was cool with it. Along the way of taking the class she wanted to have a sense of being able to educate herself on what Art is and its contribution to the world. So she figured not only shed learning she as well is teaching her students and most importantly can teach her son something new. During her teaching experience here at Discovery High School she would describe the art class as very very very unique and well so talented talkative class. She was amazed by some of the art they completed before working for Discovery. She is very much excited about what they will do in the future. To get a better knowledge of art history she would like the students to focus on things they can relate to in fact to get that grasp of the concept and be successful. The most fun experience that she had with the class was when they had an assignment about ‘Myself in Time”. This assignment allowed her to get a glimpse into her students' lives as well as their passion for creating Art, or their reason for being in the class, as well as who they were as a kid, to who they transitioned into, and the adult they look forward to becoming.

To conclude HAPPY NEW YEAR 🎇 and MERRY LATE CHRISTMAS 🎄

Chorus

Chorus is an elective that students take so they can use their voices. Every semester they work together to put together a concert for friends and family. Students in this class learn how to sing at the correct pitch and create harmonies all while creating friendships. I got to talk to Mr. Bitter, the choir director, and I asked him what his favorite part about teaching chorus was. He said, “my favorite part about teaching chorus is being able to see the evolution of my chorus students throughout the school year. On the first day they are timid, nervous, and usually don't sound that great. However, as the students get more comfortable with me, the class, their classmates, and the music you can not only hear the transformation in their voices but you can see their passion and love for it grow every class period.”

As we may know by now, there was a winter concert in December. I asked Mr. Bitter back in December how he felt about the concert. He said “I feel so incredibly excited for the students to be able to share all of their hard work from this semester with their friends, families, and the community! They have learned and memorized almost an hour worth of music which includes lyrics, rhythm, pitches, and harmonies. It's a lot of work and I hope people appreciate the work that they have put into it.”

To be a good chorus member Mr. Bitter said to do the following besides obviously being able to sing he said, “The most important thing needed to be a good chorus member is the ability to work together. None of the work that we do can be done if the students are unable to cooperate. This is a class that of course teaches you how to sing but it more importantly teaches you how to work together in a group. You have to be able to trust the person next to you in order for everything to come together.” So if you're interested in joining chorus and you can simply follow these, you're set!

Holocaust

Holocaust is taught here at DHS by Mr. Stringfellow. In this class the students learn about the Holocaust and the events that occurred.  The class usually starts their day by taking notes and sometimes watching videos to explain bits of the Holocaust. The class just finished writing a 10 page essay about different parts of the Holocaust. This class also recently had a Holocaust Survivor visit the class and explain to them what it was like to survive the event. The students had the opportunity to ask some questions. Many people think that the Holocaust was ages ago when in reality it ended in 1945 which is only 77 years ago. Overall, Holocaust is a great class to get a new learning experience and understand part of history. It gives a more complex and unsettling picture of the past that many people wouldn’t have thought to look at. Recently I got a chance to speak with Jasmin Martin about the class and ask her some questions.

The first question was “how have you liked the class so far?” to which she responded, “I like it a lot, it's a good learning experience for me.”

Another question was “What do you most enjoy about this class?” Jasmin said, “I enjoy being able to learn about and see life from a different perspective and trying to put myself in others shoes and try to understand what it was like for them."

Weight Training

Weight Training is a class that everyone can partake in. In this class students can set goals for themselves and try to accomplish them. I spoke to one of the students who is taking weight training 6th period with Coach B this year, sophomore Jordan Cottam, about the class. I asked him, if there were any projects or assignments that he has done this year that he enjoyed or found interesting? Jordans response was simply “One project that I have found interesting this year was called the fitness app project where we had to make a google slide about a fitness app” I also was able to ask him, what workouts he enjoys and which workouts he dislikes?and why? Jordan says that some workouts that he enjoys “are the bench press and bicep curls because these workouts work my arms and chest in which I would like to gain muscle. A workout I dislike is squats because my legs are not really a priority to me”.But for everyone it can all vary depending on what their physical goals are and how they perceive themselves. Lastly I asked him, if there is anything from this class that he feels he will take with him into his future? -Isabella Jurado

College Success

College Success is an elective that is taught by Mrs. O’Donnell with only one class period which is 4th period. This class helps guide students through what college assignments may look like and feel like. Assignments are assigned through Polk State so the students really get that simulation that is on the college campus. In the class students are made to research colleges and careers. Today I interviewed Anya Conner (11th Grade) about the class and how she might use them in the future. I asked her how she feels about the class and her favorite aspect of the class. She replies with “I really like the class and I feel like it does a great job preparing me for after high school”. I then ask her if she is planning on going to college and what she wants to do in the future when she gets out of high school. She said “I’m not sure if I want to go to college but it is definitely a option. I am really interested in photography and I want to do photojournalism.” Some examples of assignments that the students have done in the past semester are a lot of writing assignments, they did an essay on a career field, read a college book as a class, and they did journal entries. This class is recommended for those that have consideration into going to college after high school to help prepare them for what ahead. - Trista Jenkins

Yoga Club

In the yoga club, they execute yoga poses, stretches, and help athletes prepare for their games. Yoga can also relieve any stress you may have. The club meets on Thursdays at 12:15 in the gym. However, coach Crouse is the sponsor of the club and she just recently had her baby. So, they won't be meeting until she comes back around March if you're interested in joining. - Janiyah

Cheer

The basketball season has officially begun and that means a new season for our cheerleaders. These ladies have been putting in all the work to ensure that their cheers are choreographed spectacularly and continue to express their spirit towards our teams. I spoke with Regan Barron about her experience as a cheerleader and she said cheer has affected her life “because I've gotten more opportunities to be more involved with school and meet people I wouldn't have met without cheer. It has also taught me a lot [about] discipline”. Cheer is a sport unlike any other at DHS and requires “Honesty, leadership, communication, and dedication”'. Regan and the rest of the girls will continue to thrive throughout the rest of the season and would encourage others to join the team and exhibit their Spartan pride.  - Zach Craig

Girls Soccer

On December 7th the girls soccer team had a victory against Four Corners, this was also their senior night. They won 4 -3. This was a close game but the girls worked hard and claimed victory. Victoria Alexander scored two goals during the game. Her first goal was scored in just under five minutes of the game and her second one was scored in the second half. Leah Robles and Suliana Tavira also each scored a goal. The girls not only get to celebrate their win but also their seniors. The seven seniors got to walk the field with their families and get celebrated by their teammates. I spoke with one of the players, Sophia Rodriguez. I asked her a few questions, “How is your senior season going?” She replied with, “It is going good. Although we have not had many wins, we are all having fun and I am enjoying every moment I have left with my team before I graduate.” I also asked her if she plans on playing soccer in college. She said, “No, although I enjoy it, I want to focus on school and becoming an Ultrasound Technician.” I also interviewed a guest that was at the game, Justin Hall. I asked him how many DHS girls soccer games he attended this season. He said, “This is my second game I have attended this season and I wouldn’t mind coming to more.” I also asked him what his favorite part of this game was. He stated, “I enjoyed watching them win and I also enjoyed watching the seniors walk for senior night.” The girls have played six games so far this month. They have lost against Ridge, Victory Christian Academy, Davenport, and Poinciana. They won 4-3 against Four Corners. They tied 1-1 against Kathleen.  - Payton Jones

                                                Boys Basketball

The boy’s basketball team has been working hard and they have been doing a great job so far this season. For example, on the 28th, our boys won against Lake Gibson 71 to 62. Our team has been able to achieve a record of 2-5, with some of our players being transfer students. I met up with senior varsity player, David McLaughin, and asked him a few questions. Transferring from Davenport High School, my question to him was, what do you like about Discovery that his old school didn’t offer? He replied and said, “I love how dedicated and passionate we are as a group, not as an individual. It feels like a college program.” I then asked him how he felt about his team this year. He answered with, “We can do big things once we realize a role we play and bring effort to each and every practice and game”. The dedication and passion that David mentions is evident, with our notable players being Willie Wilson III having 19 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals, Lazarous Mwelwa Jr. having 17 points, 5 rebounds, 6 assists and 3 steals or Angel Canuelas who has 15 points, 10 rebounds and 2 blocks. While watching the boys play during this season, guests and watchers feel lots of excitement as the players score. One of these guests happened to be Lydiana Alvarez, so I asked her how she felt watching them play Lake Gibson. She replied saying, “I felt good at the basketball game while I was watching on the bleachers and supporting my friends show off their true skills. Watching them catch the dub, I felt good because I saw that all of my friends were happy and excited”. If you want to feel the same excitement that Lydiana felt, you can watch our boys play on January 5th, against Tenoroc here on campus! Go spartans!  -Nylah Farmer

Girls Weightlifting

During this weightlifting meet the girls were able to see where they stand before the big county meet. Some girls hit PR’s this week and were able to impress themselves. Emma Quintero hit a PR on the bench to a total of 110 lbs. She was very excited to have shared this with her team during this meet.

Some questions were asked about the team to the coach about the season's progression and how the sport affects the mind and the muscles. Ms. Bulson answered the questions saying”...the girls are becoming stronger”, and  how you need physical strength to perform but the mental game is when you have to tell yourself to do something when you think you can’t. There was a fellow student at the last meet, Alyssa Nobles. She said that her favorite event was the clean and jerk. “It is crazy how much these girls can actually lift”, Alyssa said. There is so much more to weightlifting than an average person may see. It is definitely one big mental game about how far you can actually push yourself. - Nicole Harris

New Years By: Brooke

Happy New Year Spartans!!

After coming back from break, today I was able to talk with sophomore Ava Woodard who is very excited for the new possibilities the new year may bring. “I’m hoping the new year will bring about new job opportunities and some grade improvements,'' she says. Ava also has a new year's resolution in which she will update her portfolio and hope that 2023 will be kinder than 2022, like most of us.

Did you know the new year is a very special tradition all over the world and every culture has its own twists to add? The 31st of December, being the last day in the Gregorian calendar, marks the day of a new year, and is also known as a day of feasting. Some people prepare a massive meal for dinner or bright and early on the morning of the new year. It is also believed that the food you serve at the feast can help determine the fate of your year. Some foods considered to be lucky and often included in the meal are pork, greens, black eyed peas, fish, grapes, and even pomegranate. Some other special new year's traditions include kissing at midnight for the couples, banners, sparklers, and especially resolutions! Many people make resolutions to keep their life exciting and fun through the next year. Some common resolutions include going to the gym, winter cleaning, seeing family and friends, traveling more, and even shifting or changing careers.

The celebration of a new year did not actually begin to develop and become recognized until around 46 B.C. when Julias Caesar instituted this holiday to honor the month of January.  “Janus”, representing a Roman god who is commonly identified with doors and passageways that are depicted with opposite faces, or more commonly known as being two faced. Caesar decided during this time that every year should be anew and we should receive somewhat of a fresh start. Since then, people have celebrated the new year in many different ways and each year has just become more fun. Lastly, don’t forget to tune into ABC from 8pm to 1am on the 31st to watch the live ball drop from Times Square in New York City, all while enjoying performances from Miley Cyrus, Dolly Parton, Dove Cameron, Shaggy, and more with the admirable host Ryan Seacrest accompanied by Anderson Cooper, Andy Cohen, and more! -Brooklyn Holt

Donating blood is extremely easy, just search for a local blood drive, sign-up, and give blood! - Tyson

Three Kings Day By: Aileen

Three Kings Day is a religious Christian and Catholic holiday that is celebrated by many Latin American and Spain on January 6th. According to "NationalToday.com" It marks the day when three wise men came to vist baby Jesus with gifts being left by the three kings. This day is also celebrated by Rosca de Reyes (king cake) is a desert shaped as a circle to signify a crown with a small surprise inside. Someone who gets this small surprise, which is a small plastic figurine representing the baby Jesus has to host the next party which is Dia de la candelaria. I got to talk to Alanys Santana, an 11th grader, about how she celebrates Three Kings Day. She says she's been celebrating it all her life but in a "different way". In her words "I get a shoe box and cut grass and put it in the shoe box for their camels to snack on and when I wake up I find small gifts in my shoe box." -Aileen Diaz

Chinese New Year By: Anya

Chinese New Year, also known as Lunar New Year or Spring Festival, is the most important festival in China and a major event in some other East Asian countries.  Some people believe that Chinese New Year originated in the Shang Dynasty (1600–1046 BC), when people held sacrificial ceremonies in honor of gods and ancestors at the beginning or the end of each year. It is associated with several myths. A popular legend tells of the mythical beast Nian, which shows up every Lunar New Year's Eve to eat people and livestock. To scare away the monster, people displayed red paper, burned bamboo, lit candles, and wore red clothes. These traditions have been continued until the present time. The date of the Chinese New Year is determined by the Chinese lunar calendar

The date changes every year but is always somewhere in the period from January 21st to February 20th. Chinese New Year 2023 will fall on Sunday, January 22nd, 2023.  Each Chinese year is associated with an animal sign according to the Chinese zodiac cycle, which features 12 animal signs in the order Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig. Each zodiac sign also has its own element: Earth, Wood, Fire, Metal, and Water. 2023 is the year of the Rabbit, specifically, Water Rabbit. Celebrations of Chinese New Year traditionally last for 16 days, starting from Chinese New Year's Eve to the Lantern Festival. The first 7 days are a public holiday, from January 21st to January 27th in 2023.

Homecoming Dance By: El

The DHS Homecoming Dance is coming up January 14! After months of infuriating delay due to the hurricane back in October, the event is finally here. It will be held in the DHS gym 7-10 pm, and if you bought a ticket a couple months ago, it carries over to now.

This year’s homecoming theme is enchanted forest, meaning fairies, woodland creatures, and all things mossy and mushroom-y. There’s lots of room for interpretation with this theme, so go crazy and get creative.

Attached is a Pinterest board with ideas for hair, nails, and outfits for anyone in a multitude of styles, simple to extravagant. Check it out if you need some inspiration.  -El Rosenburg

Martin Luther King Day By: Michaela

January 16th is National Dr Martin Luther King day. In History he has made a big impact on generations. People know him for his famous I have a dream speech but don’t know his early life. Before King became a monumental influencer around the world. Kings, a   Son of a Baptist minister, born in Atlanta, Georgia. King earned a PhD in theology, and in 1955 he assisted in planning the Montgomery Bus Boycott, the movement's first significant demonstration. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated on a balcony outside his second-floor room at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee, on Thursday, April 4, 1968.

Major racial violence breakouts were sparked by news of King's murder, resulting in more than 40 fatalities nationally and significant property damage in more than 100 American communities. Coming from the source https://kinginstitute.stanford.edu/encyclopedia/assassination-martin-luther-king-jr. I spoke with lekeria lee. She said that Martin Luther Jr is a  heroic figure towards African Americans. However, others agree to disagree like Sonia Desima. She says that she agrees with what he was fighting for and the movement but she doesn't agree with what he did in his personal life which could have affected the movement in so many ways and his personal life caused a lot of allegations as well. To conclude, here's his famous quote “I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: 'We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal. '” ― Martin Luther King Jr.
