21 Chump Street

21 Chump Street is a 14-minute musical based on a true story as reported in the series 'This American Life'. The main characters are Justin Laboi (Roberto), an eighteen year old that’s in his last semester of his senior year and Naomi (Jenifer), a 25 year old who is an undercover police officer. Justin falls in love with Naomi, even asking her to prom. He will do anything for her, even buying her weed; which in fact gets him into a lot of trouble.

Our students rehearsed after school almost everyday so that you could enjoy this musical.

Mr. Bitter wanted to let you guys know that he could not thank you guys enough for coming and supporting this club and we hope you guys continue to support our club with all of our events.

If you came by to watch, we hoped you enjoyed it as much as we did.

We thank you for coming and would like to also thank the cast, crew, and Mr. Bitter for giving us the ability to put on this show!

Here are some pictures of the show and cast! If you would like to see more you can visit our website or Instagram: @dhsperformingartsclub.

Golf Club

This year is the first year Discovery has had a golf team. The golf team goes out to local courses once a week and practices their skills alongside their teammates and coach. This month the golf team went out and played at Willowbrook in Winter Haven. I got the pleasure to speak with Kyle Boggs about golf and being a part of this team. I asked him when he started playing and what made him start to play, he replied with,"I started playing golf over a year ago and I started playing because it was a fun sport that I am able to do with friends." He said his favorite part about being a part of the golf team is getting to go out each week and have fun with the other golfers and his coach. He is happy Discovery now has a golf team and he is glad he joined it.

Bible Study Club

This week I had the honor of talking to Mr. Bitter about what students were learning this week in the Bible Study Club. This week's main point was kingdom identity. The bible verse they used this week was Isaiah 43:18! It states "Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?" It is important to know who you are in Christ and to see yourself how God sees you and not how the world sees you. Always remember your kingdom identity. If you would ever like the chance to experience Bible Study Club yourself, they meet at the second half of FLEX every Thursday

Environmentalist Club

The Green Team has a big project in store for the month of November. With a total count of 35 official members of the club, they are stepping towards an overall goal of creating a recycling program here at DHS. This has been a big challenge, mainly because this plan involves other organizations, and this is somewhat beyond their control. However, their positive attitudes keep them pushing towards their goal. Mx. Kitchens’ favorite part of the club is the enthusiasm the students show and put towards making a difference on campus. Seeing such a creative and motivated generation brings warmth to their heart. The Green Team is also collecting soda tabs. If you are interested in joining the club, you are more than welcome! Feel free to stop by the weekly meetings on Wednesdays, during the second half of FLEX. The classroom code is 6pe6q7w

Anime Club

Anime Club is a student-led organization that meets and shares their love and knowledge about anime, which is Japanese animation. Here, at Discovery, Anime Club is advised by Ms. Chilton-Carr and meets every Tuesday and Friday during the second half of FLEX. Recently, Anime Club has formed a student board and plans to have fun activities for current and new members.

I sat with AJ, one of the members of the Anime Club, and asked their opinion on Anime Club and what they do. When asked what was their favorite activity to do in Anime Club, AJ said “I love to talk about the diverse characters in anime. Each anime has its own unique story and characters are the reason why shows like Banana Fish are my favorite.”. Anime Club discusses a diverse amount of Anime. Popular shows like Naruto, Dragon Ball Z, and Attack on Titan, are just a few that are discussed at every meeting.

When asked what was the most unique characteristic of Anime Club that new members might be interested in, AJ states “Anime Club is an LGBTQ+ safe space. Similar to other clubs like GSA, we would like to let new members know that everyone is welcome here, regardless of their identity”.

Furthermore, Anime Club is run by Quinn, the club president. Anime Club has its own student board and is currently planning to open new positions for more students to get involved. If you are interested in Anime Club, make sure to stop by Ms.Chilton-Carr's room during the second half of FLEX Tuesday or Friday.

Acting

Mr. Bitters Acting 2 class is putting on Discovery’s first student production B.A.B.B.A (Bad Auditions by Bad Actors). Today I talked with Senior Ariana, who plays Roger, a couple of questions about the play. I asked how it feels to be in this production, Ariana said “It's exciting, like the fact that we're getting more students involved is really fun.”  I also asked her what she is looking forward to about the play, she said she's “looking forward to the audience reaction”. Make sure to come see B.A.B.B.A on November 17 @7 in the DALA cafeteria. Hope to see you there!

African American History

Mrs. Brown's African American History class studies the late nineteenth-century history of African Americans. Here is my interview with Mrs. Brown and a student (Abeni Clarke) on what she teaches. Including her student perspective on her experience during her teaching.

The first thing I asked Mrs. Brown when I visited her today was how she had taken account of the African American history class. She replied, "Well, I learned and took the class during my college days, then when I came to teach here at Discovery School, they asked if I would take African American history class, and I said I love to!" The class is currently studying the Great Migration and Reconstruction, she said in response to my question. When I asked if she had any fun lessons planned, she said, "Yes, the class is going to study the Harlem Renaissance and how African Americans discovered jazz and other art forms during that time."

Then I interviewed Abeni Clarke, a student in her class, and asked her a few questions about why she wanted to be in her class, what made her interested in the history of African Americans, how she felt about the class, and what her favorite part of what she was learning was. She replied, "Well, I enrolled in the course because I wanted to understand more about my history as an African American. I enjoy the class and the teacher, and I'm learning a lot about my history. The Reconstruction Era was the most interesting part of the course.

Creative Photography

Creative Photography is a class where students learn about digital cameras, how to use them, and how to take unique photos using their surroundings. There are two Creative Photography classes, but students have to take Creative Photography 1 before taking the second. All Creative Photography classes are taught by Anna Hofer, and they can count as one of the required credits needed to graduate high school.

Recently, I interviewed a student from Ms. Hofer’s 7th period Creative Photography class. I asked this student, Ivan Vela, what he thought of the class. He stated “I really like photography and I think it’s very fun”. I then asked what the best part about the class was, in which Ivan told me it is  “taking good photos”. It is quite evident that this class, along with the teacher, is essential for this school. - Yelissa Martinez

Holocaust

Holocaust is an elective that is taught by Mr. Stringfellow. As the name says, this is a class where you learn about the Holocaust itself and the events leading up to it along with other things with that time period. Mr. String is a historian and strongly educated in this area so it is highly recommended to join this class if you have an interest in history! The periods Mr. String teaches this year are 5th and 7th. Interviewing Lisandra Zambrana from his 7th period class, she said “I really like this class, it is fun and interesting learning about many different events during this time. It’s told to you like nothing else." I then asked her if she wanted to be a historian and why she finds such interest in this class. She replied with “Yes! I actually do want to be a history teacher hopefully. That is the reason why I chose this class is because I have always been interested in history.”

Art

A studio course exploring the fundamentals of the formal systems and basic elements of visual organization through two-dimensional design principles and theories using a variety of media. This class has been working on drawing using the grid method and their definitions of the elements of art. This year, the class is taught by Mrs. Russe.

I was able to have a chat with Robert Zumaya about the class. I asked him what he is looking forward to most about this class, and he said “making new friends and improving my art.” His favorite thing about the class is “Mrs. Russe, she is nice and makes the class fun.” In terms of skills, he hopes to improve "my drawing and shading skills.”

Digital Design

Digital Design is a class where students can learn about the technology that they use everyday. This class is an elective that every grade level can participate in and enjoy. I was able to interview Ms.Ocasio about her class and I asked her what is the main focus of the class. She replied, “learning how to work with Adobe InDesign, in order to obtain a certification by the end of the school year. This class will give you a preview if you are interested in studying graphic design, or marketing.” I also was able to ask her what she is looking forward to this year and what she hopes her students take away from the class. She wants “the students to feel comfortable when it comes to creating digitally. This year I will give the students more liberty to create than previous years. She also wants them to “get the certification in the program to have something in their resume and help them to find a job after high school or even help anyone to get a college scholarship”

Additionally, I got to speak with one of her students Jordan Cottam (pictured to the right) who is a sophomore taking the class. I spoke with him on his thoughts and what he is looking forward to this year. He replied, “I am looking forward to doing fun projects”. I also asked him what he hopes to achieve/learn from this class. Jordan wants to learn how to be creative with technology. Lastly, I asked him what he plans to take away from this class. He plans to use the skills he learns in the future. By the end of this class students will earn a certificate that will look good for college.

Football

This month I interviewed Cody Gilman and Devon Widener about their season coming to an end.

Devon Widener said that “this season could’ve been better but with everything that we have gone through overall I think that it has turned out pretty good.” Cody also added, “It's sad to see the season coming to an end but I am looking forward to watching the new players grow and become leaders.”

When I asked about personal games this season it was stated by Cody “for myself, I faced many challenges but didn’t let that stop me from giving it my all.” Devon remarks, “I could have played better but honestly I think I did well this year. I am proud of how this year turned out.” With the season slowly coming to an end these boys have given their all for what has been thrown at them. They have all grown as individuals on and off the field.

Cheer

In the photo above, the DHS cheerleaders are shown supporting our football team at their game against Frostproof. Be sure to be at the last game and Senior Night against Avon Park on November 4th!

I interviewed varsity cheerleader, Shaniah Reed and asked her how her first game went since she recently joined the team. "My first game felt amazing, it felt so good to be back on the sideline cheering. Even though we lose almost every game, our players put their hard work in and never give up and I love that for them! GO SPARTANS."

Cross Country

The Cross Country season has unfortunately come to an end as of this month. With the completion of the season we want to congratulate Brittany Rosado (12th grade) for earning 13th place in the Girls Junior Varsity Polk County Championship. The meet consisted of a wide variety of Polk County Schools and their cross country teams. Brittany says her “biggest cheerleader [has] to be my mother because she's always at my meets and always posts my wins on facebook.” The biggest challenge she faced when running “was coming back after having covid.” We also want to congratulate these athletes for making regionals and working as a family to push and motivate each other to accomplish great things. What a great season it has been for these athletes and we can't wait to see them next year.

Basketball

As the winter sports season is starting to approach, our boys basketball team has a ref game. This game will take place on November 10th , 8 a.m in Bartow. This game is open for anyone to go watch and support our team in their preseason. Tickets will be sold at the location of the event.

Native American History Month By: Michaela

November is the start of Native American Heritage Month. It's a time to honor our country's indigenous peoples' diverse cultures, and significant contributions. According to History.com President Barack Obama signed "The Native American Heritage Day Resolution 2009," that declares the Friday following Thanksgiving as "Native American Heritage Day."

On August 3, 1990, at the time President George H. W. Bush S proclaimed November to be National American Indian Heritage Month, often known as Native American Heritage Month. Different ways Native Americans celebrate their Heritage month is by getting together and cooking their traditional food such as bison, blue cornmeal, wild rice, and wild salmon. Foods that not only nourish the body but also sustain a culture Indigenous people say. Thanksgiving History By: Aileen

We know Thanksgiving as a day we eat so much food till we can’t move, but do you know how Thanksgiving came to be? According to History.com, ”In 1621, the Plymouth colonists and the Wampanoag shared an autumn feast that is known as the first Thanksgiving celebrations.” The pilgrims first corn harvest was so successful that the festival lasted three days. After that thanksgiving was celebrated by the individual colonies. The dishes were prepared using traditional Native American spices and their cooking methods very different from how we know thanksgiving today.

Thanksgiving didn't become a national holiday in the U.S. until 1863 by President Abraham Lincoln. Today’s thanksgiving consists of baked or roasted turkey, pies and cakes, and side dishes like stuffing and mashed potatoes. Let's not forget the cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie. And Thanksgiving wouldn’t be thanksgiving without the Macy Thanksgiving Parade in New York City.

Fall Fest By: Tyson

Fall Fest-Tyson

The 2nd Annual Fall Fest was a big hit this year from all of the awesome volunteers to all of the fun activities that we hosted. There was a designated line of volunteers that were handing out candy for all of the little ones (and the big ones) to come through and fill up their bags with all kinds of goodies! Our Haunted House was “Haunted Circus” themed this year and was very spooky and haunted with all of the spooky decor to all of the people working in the Haunted House. We also had a new addition to the Haunted House this year and that was the “Purge” Hallway, which was set up in the hallway that led attendees out of the Haunted House. The scarers were jumping out of the rooms, chasing attendees, and much more spooky scarings.

We also had a blow up obstacle course and games for those of all ages. The food trucks were also a hit and we expect even more next year.

A HUGE thank you to all of the volunteers that we had on Friday night, we could not have done it without you guys!

Election Day By: Anya

Tuesday November 8nd, 2022 is Election day in America, this election is only a general selection. This year, voters will be voting for the governor, U.S. Senator, Attorney General, Chief Financial Officer, Commissioner of Agriculture, and U.S. Representatives. This is the day Americans cast ballots to select public officials. Election day is the day to express your opinion and have a voice in the government, the people decide who will represent them in the government.  -Anya Gunderson

Veterans Day By: Brook

Join us Friday, November 11th to help celebrate Veterans Day 2022! Veterans Day, occurring the same Monday every year, is a way our country pays tribute to our soldiers who fought for our freedom and independence. When it first began, the day was only used to commemorate the soldiers from World War l but in 1954 after the Korean War; it was officially changed to Veterans Day and used to celebrate all soldiers that previously served. That means we have been celebrating our veterans for over 65 years!!

Before it was a celebration for all, this federal holiday was called Armistice Day. This is because on November 11th, 1918 the armistice that ended World War l was signed. Now over 100 years later we are still supporting the troops all over the country! Most families celebrate this holiday with traditional cookouts, boat days, bonfires, and watching the sunset by the lake.

As this is a federal holiday, schools are also out.  But it is not a day to lay around the house. It is to honor and give back to those who have served for our freedom.

Fall Fest Spirit Week By: El

We had such an amazing time with the Fall Fest Spirit Week last month!

Tuesday’s theme calls for a clash between the most dreaded types of parents- the Soccer Mom and the Barbecue Dad. Be sure to pull up the minivan or fire up that grill.

Wednesday’s theme is to dress up as a minion, so essentially a yellow shirt and overalls. Banana optional. Feel free to show up as Gru, if you are inclined to do so.

Thursday’s theme is inspired by the little ms/mr memes. Dress up as your favorite negative quality of yours as a self-callout.

Friday’s theme is a free day, come to school in costume! Get in gear for Halloween by dressing up, and have fun at the Fall Fest!

Movie Releases: Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

What to know:

After Chadwick Boseman’s unexpected death due to his silent fight with cancer, Marvel Studios had to delay this movie for some time to mourn his death. In this movie Queen Ramonda, Shuri, M'Baku, Okoye and the Dora Milaje fight to protect their nation from intervening world powers in the wake of King T'Challa's death. As the Wakandans strive to embrace their next chapter, the heroes must band together with Nakia and Everett Ross to forge a new path for their beloved kingdom. This movie also introduces the mutant, Namor the Submariner, who is painting to be the villain of the story. This movie comes out on November 11th and you can already pre-order tickets now.
