Which AI tools can students use?
At this time there are no tools that educators should be using with students, as they do not meet FIPPA's requirements. All online tools require a Privacy Impact Assessment (PIA) to be completed, before they are used with students. At this time, PIAs have not been completed for any AI tool.
When it comes to AI educators are encourage to:
Generate resources & supports, adapt lessons & projects, and develop assessment tools.
Discuss the use of these tools with colleagues.
Educators are cautioned against:
Requiring students to use any tool that either requires an account, or students to input personal information.
Using any AI tool that request access, or permission to content in your Google Drive or Google Classroom.
Storing or uploading student work and/or data.
When using any AI tool there are some important considerations. Below is a list of considerations MagicSchool.ai provides when an account is created. Although these are from the MagicSchool.ai site, they can be applied to all Ai tools.
Check for Bias and Accuracy: AI might occasionally produce biased or incorrect content. Always double-check before sharing with students.
Human Centred Approach: Use AI for initial work, but make sure to add your final touch, review for bias and accuracy, and contextualize.
Your Judgment Matters: See AI-generated content as a starting point, not a final solution.
Know the Limits: Many AI tools are unable to utilize current information, so be aware when dealing with recent topics.
Protect Privacy: Don't include personal student details and data (i.e., names, addresses, assignments).
Transparency - model the use of Ai with students, acknowledging it's use, biases, limitations while developing critical thinking skills.
