Portrait of a Graduate: Cultural Traits - How learners fit into the world!
Our incredible PTO put together a tip sheet for parents and guardians to help you start off the new school year on a positive note. Check out their tips below!
We are anticipating receiving a meeting schedule from the PTO and email address where new PTO members can register their interest in joining. Stay tuned and we'll help you get connected with them. They are looking for parents and guardians from both the Altoona and Stroudsburg regions, as well as families in more remote locations who can help us represent all CPDLF families.
Our character trait of the month for the end of August and into September is growth mindset. You'll find this especially important this time of year as your children encounter new routines, get challenged by harder course materials, and they learn to collaborate with new classmates and teachers. You can read Principal Yahner's article on growth mindset here.
As parents and guardians, we'll encounter similar hurdles that cause us to stretch and grow this school year. We'll release more information as it become finalized, but here's an idea of what's ahead:
New parent dashboards
New Learner Handbook
New course catalog
Weekly benchmarks*
Wellness checks**
As always, we'll do our best to inform you of new things to explore and share with your learners when that information becomes available. Until then, we're looking ahead to the future with optimism and a growth mindset!
*Weekly benchmarks are a new legislative requirement to ensure learners are attending school and keeping up with coursework. We're still finalizing what this will look like for your learner, but we know that the majority of CPDLF learners will not notice any changes because the benchmarks are tied to coursework. Each course already has daily assignments that are due by the end of the week. If your child completes and submits the week's work, you have met the benchmark! If you're already in the habit of completing all the work assigned by your teachers, you're already meeting your weekly benchmarks and nothing changes for you.
**Wellness checks legislation had an update. We have been tracking the minimum requirement of having your camera on and communicating with us at least once per week. This requirement can also be met by visiting a Learning Center for Learning Lab or extra help. We just need eyes on you once per week to ensure that you're doing well and that it's actually you behind the screen doing the work! The only change here is if we do NOT see you at least once a week, we will now have to schedule a meeting and/or show up at your home. Again, if you have been meeting the requirements, there is no change for you this year.
Our School Board meeting was held Tuesday, August 11, 2026 starting at 12:30 PM. Those looking to catch up on Board activities may review the Agenda here.
We are pleased to announce that our request for parents to step up and represent our families by serving on the School Board was fulfilled beyond our expectations with TWO new Parent Representatives being selected by the CPDLF Board. We're welcoming Alicja Snyder (parent of Ivy) and Dianna Snyder (parent of Julianna). We're happy to see representation by parents from both the Altoona Learning Center and the Stroudsburg Learning Center!
Prepare your documents! The new school year will begin with the legislated residency verification. Cyber families will only complete one residency verification each year—AND only with CPDLF. We'll take care of the reporting requirements to school districts behind the scenes, making the process much simpler and less time-consuming for our families.
The School Board approved our draft School Improvement Plan (SIP). We have a few days left to gather your feedback before it becomes finalized. Please note that there may be changes to this document based on Board, Administration, Pennsylvania Department of Education, and stakeholder feedback. This is a work-in-progress! Please view this link for the draft SIP.
Then, please consider sending your feedback to us. You may complete a feedback form using this link. Submit all feedback by August 28.
We're ready to welcome new learners to CPDLF! People trust their friends and family, so be sure to speak up and share information about our school. You know what they need and you know the impact CPDLF has made on your own child. It's worth a conversation.
We're making it easier than ever. All you need to do is send an email to pr@cpdlf.org with the parent's name, phone number, and email address. No links to send, no forms to fill out to request information. We'll take it from there.
Bonus: Your learner earns PBIS points for each referral AND those points grow if a referral enrolls and stays with us.
Don’t forget that you can help your school by participating in:
Box Tops for Education - scan your receipt after shopping!
Round Up Program - perfect for online orders for Walmart shoppers!
Our School Spirit Store - represent CPDLF in comfy, cozy CPDLF gear!
Zeffy Donations - help us replenish our PBIS store for your learner!

*SLC Parents: Please consider joining CEO Malynda Maurer at our booth for these events. We're hosting craft activities for children and telling potential new families what makes CPDLF special. Nothing beats hearing our story right from a current family experiencing our school! Send an email to ceo@cpdlf.org to let us know if you can make it.
ALC Parents: We're working on finding events in your area, too. If you know of a good family-friend event, please email us at pr@cpdlf.org.
Starting at a new school can be overwhelming - especially if this is your first child or your first time at a cyber school. Over the coming weeks, we'll share some tips, tricks, and handy links to save to make your life a little easier.
Our next helpful link is the page for News & Announcements. Use this area of our website to find information on upcoming events that require more details than what's on the calendar, stories of CPDLF Learners and their families, and important character trait messages from Principal Yahner.
Did you know some of the most meaningful growth happens when learners encounter something unfamiliar?
At CPDLF, we want learners to graduate ready to engage with a world filled with different people, experiences, ideas, and traditions. That means building the confidence to step outside what feels familiar while developing the respect and responsibility needed to learn from others.
A CPDLF graduate:
Ventures beyond comfort zones
Embraces cultural diversity
Acts with care and accountability
Respects different perspectives
Growth often begins with a willingness to try something new. Whether that means meeting new people, exploring an unfamiliar idea, taking on a challenge, or experiencing a different culture, stepping beyond a comfort zone helps learners build confidence, curiosity, and adaptability.
Embracing cultural diversity also helps learners better understand the world around them. Every person brings experiences, traditions, values, and perspectives shaped by their own story. Learning to appreciate those differences prepares graduates to build stronger relationships and participate thoughtfully in increasingly diverse workplaces and communities.
Respect, however, goes beyond simply recognizing differences. It means listening with curiosity, considering perspectives that may not match our own, and treating others with dignity even when we disagree. These habits help learners communicate more effectively and approach differences as opportunities to learn rather than barriers to connection.
Just as importantly, cultural awareness comes with responsibility. Acting with care and accountability means considering how our words, choices, and actions affect other people—and being willing to take responsibility when we get something wrong.
The Portrait of a Graduate helps guide CPDLF's decisions because preparing learners for the future means preparing them to engage thoughtfully with people and experiences beyond what they already know. We want our graduates to leave CPDLF curious enough to explore, confident enough to grow, and respectful enough to help create communities where people with many different backgrounds and perspectives can thrive.
I am looking forward to everyone returning on August 24th to continue the learning! We'll see you very soon.
