Everything's

Bigger in Texas

First Place Mum Winner (Priscilla Coleman)

Second Place Mum Winner (Jasmine Patten)

Third Place Mum Winner (Avery Sims)

The mum, a tradition that has gone back to the early 1950’s is still being glorified today. The mum started off as a token of affection given to a girl by her significant other, ths loving tradition has quickly evolved into a gorgeous frenzy of boas, feathers, glitter, and ribbons. Every year around homecoming time highschool students sit down and craft extravagant mums, spending hundreds to make their day special, Conroe High students are no exception for this tradition. These lovely Texan girls wore beautiful mums that we believe deserve recognition. They may be a bit large, but as they say, “Everything is bigger in Texas.”

Our first-place winner is senior Priscilla Coleman, whos mum cost $350 and was made by her beautiful mother. Our second-place winner is senior Avery Sims whose mum cost around $450 dollars and was made by herself, her mother, and her mothers bestfriend. Our third-place winner is Junior Cheer Varsity Captain Jasmine Patten whose mum cost about $400 when she ordered it from ‘The Bling Stop’ on facebook.

Mums have been customized more and more as time goes by to show who a person is and what is important to them. Mums are personalized to represent things they love, favorite colors and even organizations they belong to.

“ My favorite part of my mum would probably have to be the rabbit because rabbits mean a lot to me, because I show rabbits for FFA.” Coleman said.

Traditions in Texas are longstanding and important, and people want them to stay. The pride of being a Texan shows in these mums and their love for this tradition.

“Yes, I think it's important to keep it going because traditions are important and you have to keep doing them.” Patten said.“I honestly do believe that it's important to keep this Texas tradition ongoing, we can keep the Texas tradition ongoing by advertising or maybe having sessions where people can come and make mums maybe as a club or after school activity.” Coleman said.

Mums bring people together, as they stare and love their gorgeous big mums! These mums caught peoples eyes, and attention as they walked the halls, representing the true meaning of “Everything is bigger in Texas”.

“ I got lots of pointing fingers and people said things like ‘WOW! That pretty’ and lots of questions asking if the pearls of it were real” Sims said, “I think things like these is what keeps the ‘Everything is bigger and better in Texas’ kind of feeling of Texas about being better.”
