January 22nd-26th

Hi Families,

That was an unexpected snowy morning! I hope you all had a nice weekend. There's lots happening this week at Glen Stewart.

Beach Day

Thursday January 25th the English Kindergarten classes will be having a beach day in the winter! Feel free to bring shorts to wear in the classroom and a beach towel or blanket. We'll have an indoor picnic. Play with some sand stations and have popsicles.

Family Literacy Day - January 26, 2024

Friday January 26, we will be celebrating Family Literacy Day at Glen Stewart Primary.  Ms. Amy, our school librarian, has some things planned for the students in and around the library.

I would also encourage parents to take a picture of their family celebrating literacy together and email a copy of the picture to our email account:  GSPliteracy@gmail.com.  We would like to print the pictures and make a collage of all of the pictures of our families.  Please have pictures submitted by Sunday January 28th so we can get things organized.

If students wish, they can come to school on Friday (January 26th) dressed as their favourite character from a book or movie.  Please don't stress over this. If it is easier just get your child to bring in a copy of their favourite book.

Classroom news:

Literacy:

We are moving into week 2 of unit 2 this week. We will begin to look at the uppercase letters. We will move through these quickly. There are 2 everyday. Printing the letters is something that is an ongoing work in progress so if you have some time at home please practice.

Guided Reading

Last week we began our guided reading lessons. On Tuesday I will send home the book we read. Please return the book by Thursday so it can go into another group rotation. Take a minute before reading the book to look through the pictures. Ask your child questions about the pictures. If there is a rabbit on the page and they say bunny take a minute and ask what does bunny start with and point out how the word starts with an r and say what does r say. Students should be point to each word as they read. These books can be very repetetive so getting them to point helps them to focus on the words on the page and not just memorizing it. Most of all praise your little readers!

Math:

We are finishing up number 6 this week by doing some part-part whole activities. You can work on this at home by getting 6 objects and having students break them up into 2 groups. Point out to students that no matter which way the group is split there will always still be 6 in total.
