Dear Central Intermediate Families,

Welcome to the 2025–2026 school year! I hope your summer was filled with rest, laughter, and meaningful time with family and friends. We are thrilled to welcome our students back to school and can’t wait to see the hallways buzzing with energy, curiosity, and connection.

Each year, I’m excited about the opportunity for a fresh start. One of the best parts of being a principal is watching our students grow throughout their years at Central, academically, socially, and emotionally. It’s also a joy to welcome new staff members to our district who bring fresh ideas, passion, and a shared commitment to student success.

We are committed to creating a school environment where every student feels safe, supported, and challenged to grow. This year, you’ll see a continued focus on academic growth, strong relationships, and social-emotional learning. Our theme this year is Together We Grow, and we truly believe that when we work together with students, staff, and families, we create the best conditions for learning and personal development.

We’ve spent the summer preparing for a strong start. From updated procedures to freshening up our building, we’re focused on setting the tone for a successful school year. Our incredible staff is eager to welcome your child back and support them every step of the way.

Communication with Staff

Our office is now open from 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM on school days.

Please note: the office may close early on early dismissal days when office staff have meetings. If you’re unsure whether the office is open, we recommend calling ahead at (309) 444-3943 to check.

Families can expect emails from staff between 7:30 AM and 3:30 PM on school days.

While families are welcome to email when convenient for them, please understand that staff will respond within 48 hours on school days.

Emails sent on weekends or non-school days will typically be addressed within two school days.

If you haven’t received a response within that time frame, feel free to send a follow-up email or contact the school office.

Start and end times for CIS and CPS students will change for this year to accommodate transportation needs. Please note the new times below:

Morning (Monday - Friday)

7:40 AM – Students may enter the building
7:50 AM – All students must be seated and ready for class

Car riders have multiple options for morning drop-off. Families may use the drop-off line in front of the building, or they may park in the parking lot, walk their child to the crosswalk, and allow our crossing guard to assist them safely across. We encourage families to choose the option that works best for them to help ensure students arrive on time.

Attendance & Tardies

Consistent attendance and punctuality are essential for academic success. Our goal is for all students to be present and on time each school day to make the most of their learning opportunities.

We understand that occasional absences due to illness, emergencies, or family situations may occur. In those cases, please notify the CIS office as soon as possible. Absences become unexcused after 10 days without a doctor's note, and in certain situations, three unexcused absences may result in a truancy referral.

If your child's attendance is affected by unique or ongoing circumstances, please reach out to Mrs. Bush at ebush@central51.net. We are here to partner with families and provide support as needed.

The CIS office accepts doctors' notes or appointment documentation to update attendance records. Notes can be emailed to Mrs. Bright at cbright@central51.net, and she will ensure the records are adjusted accordingly. While notes are not required for the first 10 absences, we strongly encourage families to submit them, especially if your child may exceed the 10-day limit.

Our school day begins at 7:50 AM, and students must be in their classrooms, ready to learn, by this time. Students not in their classrooms by 7:50 AM will be marked tardy. After a two-week grace period, tardies will begin to accumulate starting Tuesday, September 2. Three tardies equal one detention, making it crucial to arrive on time, not just for learning, but also for staying eligible for rewards like ROCK.

If you have questions about attendance or tardies, or if your student or family needs support, please get in touch with Mrs. Bush directly. We’re committed to helping every student succeed.

Student Schedules

Student schedules are now viewable in Skyward! We encourage you to review your child's schedule as soon as possible and discuss it with your child.

All students should have 10 periods per day. If you notice any errors with your students' schedules, please contact the CIS Office as soon as possible so we can fix any issues.

CIS Lockers

Grade-level teachers will assign lockers during the first week of school. Locker assignments will not be available in Skyward until after lockers have been assigned.

Lockers in 5th and 6th grade do not lock. Lockers in 7th and 8th grade do lock, and students will receive a locker combination. Students are expected to leave lockers locked when they are not in use.

Student Locker Expectations

Keep your locker closed at all times.
Try your best to keep your locker organized.
Lockers cannot accommodate many items. Only bring what you need to school.
Never store food (except your lunch) in your locker for more than one day.
Backpacks stay in lockers at all times. They are never allowed in classrooms.
Phones must be kept in lockers and shut off during the school day.
Only use the locker assigned to you. Do not share your locker or combination with anyone else.
Avoid slamming locker doors. Close them gently to avoid damage or disruption.
If your locker isn’t working properly, tell an adult right away. Don’t force it.
Keep your combination private. Do not share it with anyone, even your friends.
Do not decorate lockers without permission. Any decorations must be appropriate and easily removable.
Don’t hang out at lockers during passing periods. Get what you need and move on to keep traffic flowing.

Lunch Schedules

We are excited to share that each grade level will have its own dedicated lunch period this year! This change ensures that students have plenty of time for both lunch and recess, leading to smoother transitions and a more enjoyable break in the day.

Because some grade levels eat later, snacks will be allowed to help students stay energized and focused. Grade-level teams will communicate specific snack expectations with students and families, including guidelines for when and what to bring.

On Friday, August 15, all students will eat in the cafeteria at the start of the lunch time. Beginning August 18, students will be doing the following schedule:

5th Grade
- Lunch 5A (10:59 – 11:20 AM): Lawson, Woolard, Couri
- Lunch 5B (11:21 – 11:42 AM): A. Uftring, Armstrong, Kennedy

Groups will switch lunch blocks after Friday, September 12.

As long as behavior expectations are met, students will have the opportunity to choose their lunch block after first quarter.

6th Grade
- Lunch 6A (11:45 – 12:06 PM): Ham, Plank, Martin
- Lunch 6B (12:07 – 12:28 PM): Uftring, Lane, Kinder

As a reminder, Central District 51 does not accommodate takeout food deliveries for students. Managing multiple deliveries during student lunch times is not feasible and can be disruptive to the offices’ operations.

Behavior Expectations & Policies

CIS Behavior Expectations

At CIS, we believe in creating a safe, respectful, and welcoming environment where all students can learn and grow. Students are expected to treat others with kindness, follow school rules, and make responsible choices throughout the day—whether in the classroom, hallway, cafeteria, or on the playground. We teach and reinforce these expectations regularly and work together as a team to support positive behavior. When students make mistakes, we see it as a chance to reteach and help them learn from the experience. However, when behavior becomes unsafe, disruptive, or disrespectful, appropriate consequences will follow, and families will be contacted as needed.

All of our behavior expectations, policies, and procedures are outlined in the CIS Student-Family Handbook, which we encourage all families to review together at the beginning of the school year. Below are a few key expectations students will encounter during the school day. Reviewing these ahead of time helps set everyone up for a safe, successful, and respectful school year.

Positive Behavior = Fun Opportunities!

At CIS, we love celebrating students who consistently make positive choices and follow school expectations. One of the most exciting rewards is getting to attend ROCK—a fun, PTO-sponsored evening event filled with games, junk food, and friends! Students with no detentions or suspensions are eligible to attend!

Please also note that tardies count toward detentions, so arriving at school on time each day is an important part of staying eligible. We encourage families to help students build strong routines and take pride in their positive behavior!

Cell Phone & Smart Watch Policy

Cell phones must remain in students’ lockers throughout the school day and are not permitted in classrooms, the cafeteria, or at recess. Our goal is to minimize distractions to create the best possible learning and social-emotional experience for our students.

Students are allowed to wear smart watches, but they must only be used as a watch during the school day. Calling, texting, or using other communication features is not permitted during school hours. Students who use their smart watches as a cellular device will receive consequences as outlined in the Student/Family Handbook.

In some cases, school staff may permit students to use their cell phones to call or text a parent/guardian. These calls should only take place in the school office or the classroom with a teacher.

Students who do choose to use a cell phone without permission during the school day will be subject to the consequences outlined in the Student/Family Handbook:

First offense – The device will be confiscated by school personnel. A verbal and written warning through Skyward will be assigned. The student will receive the device back at the end of the day in the school office.
Second offense – The device will be confiscated. A detention will be assigned and noted in Skyward. The student’s parent/guardian will be notified and required to pick up the device in the school office.
Third offense – The device will be confiscated. A detention will be assigned. The student’s parent/guardian will be notified and required to pick up the device in the school office. Additionally, the student will be required to turn in their device to the school office for the next 10 school days. If the student is found in possession of the device during this 10-day period, the student will face consequences for insubordination.
Fourth and subsequent offense – The device will be confiscated. The student will be assigned a detention and will be required to turn the device into the office for the remainder of the school year. The student’s parent/guardian will be notified and required to pick up the device in the school office. The student will also face consequences for insubordination.

Student Water Bottles

Students are only permitted to have water in their bottles during the school day, and only water is allowed in classrooms. Beverages such as soda, juice, flavored drinks, coffee, and sports drinks must be brought in a separate, clearly labeled container and are only allowed during lunch. These beverages must remain in the cafeteria and are not permitted on the playground or in classrooms.

This policy helps protect learning materials and technology, especially Chromebooks, from damage caused by spills of sticky or sugary liquids.

Energy drinks are not allowed at any time during the school day, including lunchtime, due to their high caffeine and sugar content and their impact on student focus and behavior.

If a student brings a non-water beverage in their water bottle, it will be held in the office until the end of the day.

Additionally, students returning from appointments (such as doctor or dentist visits) with beverages other than water will be required to dispose of them before returning to class.

Thank you for your support in helping us maintain a safe and focused learning environment.

CIS Dress Code

We want to take a moment to remind students and families about our school’s dress code policy, which is outlined in detail in the Student/Family Handbook. Our dress code is designed to promote a respectful and positive learning environment while still allowing students to express their individuality.

The dress code will be enforced by teachers or administration in a manner that is respectful and protects students’ privacy. If a concern arises, it will be handled discreetly to maintain student dignity and minimize disruption to learning.

We appreciate families partnering with us to help ensure students arrive at school dressed appropriately and ready to learn. Your support makes a big difference in creating a focused and respectful school culture.

Students are expected to wear clothing in a neat, clean, and well fitting manner while on school property and/or in attendance at school sponsored activities. Students are to use discretion in their dress and are not permitted to wear apparel that causes a substantial disruption in the school environment.

Student dress (including accessories) may not advertise, promote, or picture alcoholic beverages, illegal drugs, drug paraphernalia, violent behavior, or other inappropriate images.
Student dress (including accessories) may not display lewd, vulgar, obscene, or offensive language or symbols, including gang symbols.
Hats, hoods, coats, bandanas, sweat bands, and sunglasses may not be worn in the building during the school day.
Hair styles, dress, and accessories that pose a safety hazard are not permitted in the school.
Clothing that is poorly fitting, showing skin and/or undergarments, may not be worn at school.
No shirts which do not cover the mid-section (belly) when the student is sitting or standing.
All tops must have straps.
No pants with holes above mid-thigh.
The length of shorts or skirts must be appropriate for the school environment.
Appropriate footwear must be worn at all times.
If there is any doubt about dress and appearance, building administration will make the final decision.
Students whose dress causes a substantial disruption of the orderly process of school functions or endangers the health or safety of the student, other students, staff or others may be subject to discipline.

A student’s appearance, including dress and hygiene, must not disrupt the educational process or compromise standards of health and safety. The school does not prohibit hairstyles historically associated with race, ethnicity, or hair texture, including, but not limited to, protective hairstyles such as braids, locks, and twists. Students who disrupt the educational process or compromise standards of health and safety must modify their appearance.

Backpacks

To help keep our classrooms safe, organized, and clutter-free, backpacks must be placed in lockers at the start of the day and should not be brought into classrooms. Students are not allowed to carry backpacks throughout the school day unless there is a documented medical need. Any special circumstances must be discussed and approved by Mrs. Bush or Ms. Martin. We appreciate your support in helping us maintain a safe and distraction-free learning environment.

Cafeteria

Our cafeteria is more than just a place to eat—it's a space where students come together and build community. To keep it safe, calm, and respectful for everyone, we have clear expectations for how students should behave during lunch.

Please take a moment to review the following cafeteria guidelines with your child:

All students are entitled to a lunch every day. Students who forget their lunch may have hot lunch. All students are required to take a lunch and milk, even if they do not plan to eat much.
We care about students and want them to be safe and healthy. If any of our staff notice you’re not eating, they may check in to make sure students are eating.
Enter calmly and go directly to your seat or the lunch line.
Stay seated unless given permission to get up.
Raise your hand if you need help.
Use inside voices — no yelling or shouting.
No clapping, banging, or loud noises — this creates an unsafe and disruptive environment.
Keep hands, feet, and food to yourself.
Clean up your space — trash and trays must be thrown away properly.
Be kind — no teasing, cutting in line, or mean behavior.
Show respect to every adult in the cafeteria.
If an adult gives you a direction, you must follow it — the first time, every time.
Food from restaurants is not allowed to be delivered or eaten in the cafeteria.
Microwaves
- No metal
- Take turns
- Clean up messes
- Microwave safe items only

The cafeteria is a shared space. Respectful behavior keeps it safe and enjoyable for everyone.

CIS Playground

Recess is a time for students to have fun, get fresh air, and build friendships. To make sure everyone stays safe and enjoys their break, we have clear expectations for how to behave on the playground. These rules help prevent accidents, reduce conflict, and ensure that all students feel included and respected during play. Please take a moment to review these playground guidelines with your child:

Be courteous, kind, and respectful to students and adults.
Eating is not allowed on the playground unless you are given permission to eat lunch outside.
Pick up playground equipment, lunchboxes, and water bottles after recess.
Keep hands, feet, and body to self at all times.
Line up immediately when you hear the whistle/bell ring.
Report incidents on the playground to an adult immediately.
There is a maximum of 15 people on the Central Spinner. No student should have their body above the top bar. No student shall hang from the spinner at any time.

CIS Grading Scale

At CIS, grades are intended to reflect what students know and are able to do in relation to the academic standards. They provide feedback on student learning and help identify areas of strength and areas that may need additional support. We use the following grading scale across all subjects:

A = 90–100
B = 80–89
C = 70–79
D = 60–69
F = 59 & Below

If you have questions about your child’s grades or progress, we encourage you to reach out to their teacher to learn more about how they’re performing and growing.

CIS Homework Assistance

Homework Assistance is an after-school opportunity for all students to work on school assignments, receive extra help from teachers, and stay caught up on their learning in a quiet, supportive environment.

Starting Tuesday, September 2, Homework Assistance will be offered every: Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 2:51 – 4:00 p.m.

Here’s how it works:

2:51 – 3:30 PM – Students can get help from any of their teachers.
3:30 – 4:00 PM – Students work with the supervising teacher for that day.

At least one teacher from each grade level will stay after school on these days to provide support.

Students who are staying for Homework Assistance should report directly to the assigned Homework Assistance classroom after the second bell rings at dismissal.

Whether you need help with a tough assignment, time to catch up on missing work, or just a quiet place to focus—Homework Assistance is for you!

In extracurriculars? No problem! Talk to your coach or sponsor about a schedule that allows you to take advantage of both.

🚍 Transportation is available for students who attend Homework Assistance and need a ride home.

Homework Assistance Transportation

Transportation Procedure for Mandatory Homework Assistance

Form Submission: Please complete the Google Form linked below if your child requires transportation home from Mandatory Homework Assistance. Forms are also available on grade-level websites and Google Classrooms.
Timing: Forms must be submitted by 3:00 PM the day before transportation is needed.
Notification: Once submitted, the form will notify your child’s teacher, the transportation department, and the office.

Transportation for Non-Mandatory Homework Assistance

Students who stay for Homework Assistance to have a quiet place to work or receive extra help are also welcome to use transportation.
Form Submission: Complete the form linked below according to your child’s grade level and arrange this with your child’s teacher ahead of time.
Regular Use: If your child regularly stays for Homework Assistance and would benefit from transportation, please contact your child’s homeroom teacher to set up a regular transportation plan.
Submission: Forms must be submitted by 3:00 PM the day before transportation is needed.

Benchmark Testing & Renaissance Home Connect

As part of district-wide efforts to improve student achievement, all Central Intermediate students take benchmark assessments three times per year (fall, winter, and spring) to measure their academic progress and growth. All Central Intermediate students will take benchmark assessments during the following weeks:

The next time your student takes an AR test or a STAR reading or math assessment, you will be notified via email of the results within minutes of test completion!

Technology

CIS 1:1 Devices

All students are provided with a district-issued Chromebook for the school year to support their learning. Students are expected to bring their Chromebook to school fully charged each day, so it’s important that devices are plugged in and charging at home every night.

Please ensure that students have their Chromebooks charged and at school on Thursday, August 14. If you notice any damage or issues with your child’s Chromebook, please complete the Chromebook Repair Request form so we can address it promptly.

As part of the school registration process, all students and families signed off on the Central District 51 Technology Handbook. It is essential that both you and your child review and understand the information presented in the handbook.

Please remember that school-issued Chromebooks are for educational use only. Students should not be using these devices to watch YouTube videos (unless assigned by a teacher), play games that are not school-related, or engage in any other non-academic activity. Misuse of school technology may result in disciplinary consequences.

Online Safety

In today’s digital age, social media plays a big role in how students connect and express themselves, but it also comes with risks like cyberbullying, inappropriate content, and online predators. As adults, it’s our shared responsibility to help students navigate the digital world safely and responsibly.

At Central, we reinforce responsible digital use through Digital Citizenship lessons, Social Emotional Learning (SEL) activities, and school assemblies throughout the year. But your partnership at home is key.

Why Monitor Social Media?

Safety: Monitoring helps protect your child from cyberbullying, scams, and harmful content.
Responsibility: It encourages respectful communication and smart online choices.
Well-being: You can watch for signs of stress or emotional struggles related to online interactions.

Tips for Supporting Your Child Online:

Talk regularly about their social media use. Ask questions and listen.
Set boundaries for screen time and app usage that reflect your family’s values.
Stay informed about the platforms they use and review privacy settings together.
Model good habits by using social media responsibly yourself.

Bark – Monitors text messages, emails, and social media for signs of harmful content.
Qustodio – Offers screen time limits, app controls, and location tracking.
Google Family Link – Great for younger users; manages apps and monitors usage.

Monitoring isn’t about spying. It’s about protecting and guiding. By staying engaged, we can help students build healthy online habits that will help them for years to come.

Safe2Help Illinois

Central District 51 participates in Safe2Help Illinois, a statewide school safety program that provides students with a safe and confidential way to report concerns related to suicide, bullying, threats, or violence. The program is designed to encourage students to “seek help before harm”—not to punish, but to intervene early and support those in need.

As we head into summer, we want families to know that Safe2Help is available 24/7, even when school is not in session. If students or families are worried about someone’s well-being or safety during the break, they can use Safe2Help to report concerns and access support.

Reports are reviewed and shared with school officials or emergency responders, depending on the nature of the concern. In the absence of a trusted adult, Safe2Help gives students a confidential space to speak up for themselves or others.

Important Technology Information

As part of our ongoing commitment to digital safety and transparent communication, we’d like to remind families about the Hapara Parent Portal, a tool that helps you stay connected to your child’s online activity. Hapara is installed on all students’ school-issued Chromebooks and allows staff to monitor browsing activity when students are logged into their school Google accounts, even on other devices.

The Hapara Parent Portal was included as part of the registration process this school year. If you were unable to sign up or did not receive an invitation, please email Mrs. Bush (ebush@central51.net)
or Ms. Martin (kkmartin@central51.net) so we can resend the activation link.

With students required to bring their Chromebooks home over the summer, the Hapara Parent Portal offers you real-time visibility into their browsing activity, assignments, and classroom progress. This tool helps support digital safety while reinforcing positive online behaviors—both in and out of school.

Families who opt into the Parent Portal will also receive Hapara Wellness Alerts via email if flagged content or activity raises concern. These alerts are typically shared with school administrators and counselors to ensure students are supported when needed. However, please note that over the summer, our administrative and counseling teams will take time off to recharge and prepare for the upcoming school year. Staff will not be actively monitoring Hapara over the summer. We will do our best to respond to any urgent concerns, but responses may be delayed.

As always, Hapara is a support tool—not a substitute for active parental supervision. We strongly encourage families to continue monitoring devices over the summer months and have regular conversations with their children about safe, respectful, and responsible online behavior.

To ensure you receive access to the Hapara Parent Portal, we will use the student and family contact information listed in Skyward. Look for an email invitation directly from Hapara to activate your account.

Arrival & Dismissal

Arrival Procedures

Drop off at Central Intermediate School begins at 7:40 a.m.. Students are not permitted to enter the building before 7:40 unless students/parents have pre-arranged early arrival with a staff member.

Car Riders

Drop off at Central Intermediate School is at the CIS Main Entrance (Holford Gym doors) beginning at 7:40. Parents/guardians dropping off students MUST use the following procedures:

Drivers MUST enter the drop-off line from the Eagle Avenue entrance. Drivers are not to enter the car line from CPS. This stops the flow of traffic around the parking lot.
Drivers who wish to stay in their cars during drop-off MUST use the CIS drop-off line to drop off students. For student safety, drivers are not to drop students off on the street.
Drivers should pull forward as far as possible in the drop-off zone in front of the CIS entrance to allow as many cars as possible to drop off.
Students should be ready to exit the vehicle as soon as the vehicle stops in front of the sidewalk by CIS. When there is a pause in moving traffic, students should exit the vehicle quickly and enter the building.
Drivers who wish to have their students utilize the crosswalk in front of the main entrance should park their cars and walk students to the crosswalk. For student safety, please do not allow your child to walk across the parking lot alone.

Walker/Bicycle Riders

Walkers and bicycle riders should enter the building through the CIS Main entrance (Holford Gym doors).
Walkers crossing the streets near Central Intermediate School should utilize the crosswalks and crossing guards each day.
Bicycle/scooter riders should walk their bikes/scooters once they arrive at the sidewalk in front of Central Intermediate School.
Bicycle/scooter riders should walk bicycles/scooters in crosswalks.
Bicycle/scooter riders should park their bikes/scooters on the cement pad next to the Central Intermediate School Main Entrance.

Bus Riders

Central Intermediate School bus riders will be released from buses at 7:40. Bus riders will walk through the CIS Cafeteria and directly to their classrooms.

To accommodate the primary school bus routes, some CIS students will be dropped off as early as 7:30 AM. These students are expected to enter the CIS Cafeteria immediately upon arrival and remain there until they are dismissed at 7:40 AM to head to their classrooms.

This space will be supervised by staff, and all cell phones should be put away during this time. Students are welcome to read, talk quietly with friends, or relax while they wait. Thank you for helping us maintain a calm and respectful environment to start the day!

Dismissal Procedures

Dismissal time for fifth through eighth-grade students begins at 2:46 p.m. and ends at 2:51 p.m. Dismissal runs as follows:

Bus riders, walkers, and bicycle riders will be dismissed from the Intermediate School at 2:46 p.m.
Car riders will be dismissed from CIS at 2:51 p.m.
Siblings who wait for CPS students will be dismissed from class at 2:51 p.m. and will be supervised in Holford Gym until CPS dismissal.

CPS Siblings

CIS provides supervision for students picking up CPS siblings. Students should report to Holford Gym at 2:51 if they are picking up a sibling. CIS students are not allowed to wait outside for CPS siblings and must be supervised in the gym unless they are with a parent/guardian.

Walkers/Bicycle Riders

Once dismissed, students are to leave the school immediately.
Walkers crossing the streets near Central Intermediate School should utilize the crosswalks and crossing guards each day.
Bicycle/scooter riders are to walk bicycles/scooters in crosswalks and on the sidewalk in front of the school.

Car Riders

Car riders are dismissed from CIS beginning at 2:51 p.m. Parents/guardians picking up students MUST use the following procedures:

Drivers MUST enter the drop-off line from the Eagle Avenue entrance. Drivers are not to enter the car line from CPS after 2:40 p.m.
Drivers who wish to stay in their vehicles during pickup MUST use the CIS drop-off line to pick up students. For student safety, drivers are not to pick up students along the street.
Drivers should pull forward as far as possible in the pickup zone in front of the CIS entrance to allow as many cars as possible in the line.
Students exiting the building will be asked to look for their rides immediately. Students whose rides are not yet in the dropoff zone will be asked to walk to their right when they exit the building so cars can continue to pull forward.
Students will not be permitted to walk to alternative pickup locations.

Drivers may choose to park in the CIS parking lot to avoid the pickup line. Drivers choosing this option MUST exit their vehicle and meet their child near the crosswalk. For their safety, students are not permitted to enter the parking lot until their ride is there to meet them.

CIS Extracurriculars

Extracurricular Events

We love when students come support their fellow classmates at extracurricular events! Please keep in mind that students are expected to adhere to the following behavior during all Central events:

Students are expected to show good sportsmanship at all times. Central students cheer FOR our athletes, NOT against the opponents. Actions like booing, turning backs to players, taunting, and making noises during expected silent times, and cheering against the other team do not show good sportsmanship.
Students should not yell or attempt to talk to officials, coaches, or opponents.
Students are expected to be in the gym during gameplay. Students may not hang out in Holford Lobby/Foyer during games.
Students should stay off the court of play at all times, even during halftime.
Concession items are allowed in the gym. Students should pick up after themselves.
Students should arrange for transportation prior to the event.

Extracurricular Offerings

As we start a new school year, it is a great opportunity for students to try new extracurriculars. Studies have shown that students involved in extracurriculars have advantages in academics, social-emotional development, life skills, and character development.

Health & Safety

Bus Expectations

Riding the bus is an essential part of the school experience, and it’s crucial that we maintain a safe and respectful environment for everyone on board. Please review the following important reminders with your CIS student(s):

1. Be Respectful to the Driver

The bus driver is there to keep everyone safe. Students should listen to the driver's instructions, and always greet them when getting on and off the bus. A simple “thank you” goes a long way!

2. Stay Seated in the Assigned Seat

All students will be given an assigned seat at the start of the year. Students are to find their assigned seat once they are on the bus. Students should stay in their seat until the bus comes to a complete stop. Standing or moving around while the bus is in motion can lead to accidents.

3. Keep Noise Levels Down

While it’s great to socialize with friends, remember that loud voices can distract the driver. Use indoor voices and save the shouting for outside! Don't forget! Phones should be silent during the ride. If students wish to listen to devices, headphones/earbuds are required.

4. No Food or Drink

For safety and to keep the bus clean and free from distractions, students are not allowed to eat or drink while on the bus; this includes chewing gum.

5. Respect Personal Space

Everyone has their own personal space. Avoid touching or bothering others on the bus.

6. Use Appropriate Language

Always use kind and respectful language when talking to your friends and classmates. Inappropriate language will be addressed by administration. Bullying or negative comments will not be tolerated and will be dealt with by administration.

7. Be Prepared to Get Off

As the bus approaches the stop, students should gather belongings and prepare to exit the bus. Wait for the bus to come to a complete stop before standing up.

8. Follow School Policies

Remember that the same behavioral expectations in school apply to the bus. Disruptive behavior can lead to consequences, including losing bus privileges.

9. Report Issues

If you see something that makes you uncomfortable or unsafe, please tell an adult or report it to your teacher. We all have the right to feel safe on our way to and from school.

10. Getting On/Off the Bus

Students should exercise caution when getting on and off the bus. Students should walk in designated areas indicated by the graphic below to ensure the driver can see the students at all times.

At Central District 51, the safety and well-being of our students and staff remain a top priority. The safety measures shared with families last year continue to be in place for the 2025–2026 school year, and we’re committed to building on them.

Ongoing Safety Measures Include:

Building Security: All entrances remain locked during the school day. Many doors are equipped with shatter-resistant safety film and enhanced surveillance systems.
Visitor Management: Raptor Technologies continues to provide secure visitor check-in and screening.
Crisis Response: Staff and administration use the CrisisGo app alongside the "I Love You Guys" Foundation’s Standard Response Protocol (SRP) to improve emergency communication and response.
Classroom Safety: All classroom doors remain locked during instructional time.
Law Enforcement Support: We maintain a close partnership with the Washington Police Department to ensure a prompt and coordinated response if needed.
Student Involvement: Students are encouraged to use Safe2Help Illinois to report concerns anonymously.
Social-Emotional Support: Our district is proud to offer full-time counselors, social workers, and a Board-Certified Behavior Analyst to support students’ emotional and behavioral needs.

As part of our proactive safety efforts, we will continue practicing the Standard Response Protocol (SRP) through drills that help students and staff prepare for a range of emergencies. These include:

Hold – Remain in the classroom and clear the hallways.
Secure – Move indoors and lock exterior doors.
Lockdown – Lock doors, turn off lights, stay out of sight.
Evacuate – Exit the building to a designated safe location.
Shelter – Follow instructions for weather or hazardous events.

These drills are approached with care and clear communication so students feel prepared, not scared.

CPR Training for Staff

We’re pleased to continue CPR training for staff this year as part of our continued commitment to emergency preparedness.

Student Learning & Involvement

During the first weeks of school, students will be learning about our safety protocols and how they can play an important role in keeping our building safe. This includes understanding what to do in an emergency, being aware of their surroundings, and reporting concerns to a trusted adult or through Safe2Help Illinois. When students are informed and involved, it builds a stronger sense of safety for everyone.

We want school to feel like a safe, welcoming place for every student, and we will continue to do everything we can to ensure that happens each and every day.

CIS Counseling

Hello CIS Families!

Welcome everyone to a brand-new school year! I am excited for my first full year at Central and looking forward to supporting students as they settle in for the year. As the School-Based Behavior Health Counselor, I will be focused on supporting students emotional needs and providing a calm safe space within the school. Remember, a counselor request form can be found in your daily announcements! Some supports I can offer include:

Individual and small group counseling
Support with peer relationships and self-esteem
Resouces for families as needed
Many other Social-Emotional learning supports

6th Grade Records Due Wednesday, October 15

All incoming 6th-grade students need the following medical forms completed by October 15, 2025. Students with incomplete physicals & immunizations will be excluded from school starting October 15, until records are received.

Illinois School Physical Form (A sports physical cannot be accepted in place of the School Physical. However, the Illinois School Physical can be accepted in place of a sports physical.) Due October 15, 2025

Family Support Services

Washington Weekend Snackpac

Washington Weekend Snackpac provides a bag of food items to children for weekends when school lunch and breakfast are unavailable. All food is nonperishable and provided to children free of charge. Bags are distributed on the last school day before a weekend or break. Any child who attends Washington schools who qualifies for free or reduced-price lunches through the National School Breakfast and Lunch Program is eligible to participate in Washington Weekend Snackpac. The program is run completely by caring volunteers and is funded through the generous gifts from Washington area churches, businesses, and residents of this community. We encourage you to take advantage of this program for your children.

Branches Care Closet

What: Branches of Washington is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to empower children, youth, and their families by offering programs and resources that foster their development and success. Once per month, volunteers will staff the Branches Care Closet room at school and help students shop for free hygiene products, such as shampoo, conditioner, body wash, deodorant, toothpaste, and toothbrushes, as well as free new or gently used clothing such as shorts, pants, leggings, shirts, hoodies, sweaters, sweatshirts, and new packages of underwear and socks.

Who: Any student who qualifies for free or reduced-price school lunch can participate in this program. Students must have this permission form on file before they shop.
