October 2022 Edition
Mrs. Bush
Dear families,
We had a great September and are excited to head into October!
First, I want to thank all those involved in planning and executing the Trojan Trot! It was a fun day for students and staff, and we loved the opportunity for families to come and cheer for students. The fundraiser raised over $86,000 for PTO thanks to involvement from the Central Community!
Extracurricular Activities
Fall brings with it the opportunity for students to attend basketball and volleyball games, and we are excited to have students helping cheer on our athletes! Please go over the following expectations with your child if they are attending to attend games at CIS:
Students should always show good sportsmanship. Actions like booing, turning backs to players, taunting, and making noises during expected silent times do not show good sportsmanship.
Items from the concession stand are allowed in the gym this year. Please talk with your child about making sure their trash is picked up after games.
Students attending games must be in Holford Gym during gameplay. Students may not hang out in the Holford Lobby/Foyer during games.
If your child is planning to attend a game, please ensure a ride is arranged ahead of time.
Students, whether they are playing or not, are representing Central. Please encourage your child to be respectful to athletes and spectators.
Communication
Please feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns at ebush@central51.net!

Can you believe it is October already? The year is starting strong and moving along quickly.
Thank you to all families for following the procedures for morning drop off and afternoon pick up! This month, I would like to highlight safety tips for bus riders. Please discuss/review the items below with your children to ensure they stay safe while traveling to/from school.
In the interest of the student’s safety and in compliance with State law, students are expected to observe the following:
Dress properly for the weather. Make sure all drawstrings, ties, straps, etc. on all clothing, backpacks and other items, are shortened or removed to lessen the likelihood of them getting caught in bus doors, railings or aisles.
Arrive on time at the bus stop, and stay away from the street while waiting for the bus.
Stay away from the bus until it stops completely and the driver signals you to board. Enter in a single file without pushing. Always use the handrail.
Take a seat right away and remain seated facing forward. Keep your hands, arms, and head inside the bus.
Talk quietly on the bus. No shouting or creating loud noises that may distract the driver. Tablets, iPods®, iPads®, smart phones, and other electronic devices must be silenced on the bus unless a student uses headphones.
Help keep the bus neat and clean. Keep belongings out of the aisle and away from emergency exits. Eating and drinking are not allowed on the bus.
Always listen to the driver’s instructions. Be courteous to the driver and other students. Sit with your hands to yourself and avoid making noises that would distract the driver or bother other passengers. Remain seated, keeping your hands, arms, and head inside the bus at all times.
Wait until the bus pulls to a complete stop before standing up. Use the handrail when exiting the bus.
Stay out of the danger zone next to the bus where the driver may have difficulty seeing you. Take five giant steps away from the bus and out of the danger zone, until you can see the driver and the driver sees you. Never crawl under a bus.
If you must cross the street after you get off the bus, wait for the driver’s signal and then cross in front of the bus. Cross the street only after checking both ways for traffic.
Never run back to the bus, even if you dropped or forgot something.
Please see the image below indicating areas of protentional hazard for students and areas most appropriate for students to wait and load onto the bus.
Thank you for your continued support at home!
Mrs. Brosch
It’s hard to believe we are already halfway through the first quarter! Hopefully your student(s) talked with you about the CENTRAL Code assembly and things they learned during SEL lessons about Capable. We are now moving on to the “E” in CENTRAL Code, which stands for Empathy. Students will be learning about empathy and friendship this month, which is great timing because October also happens to be National Bullying Prevention Month! Research shows that positive peer relationships at school are correlated with improved academic performance. There are so many benefits to learning ways to be empathic! As we discuss empathy, friendship, and anti-bullying practices at school, please talk with your student(s) about what they are learning! If you are interested in learning more on these topics, please see the resources below.
In addition to our CENTRAL Code activities, the month of October will also be when teachers look at students' social emotional skills. Teachers will be completing a student social emotional learning assessment called DESSA to identify students strengths and opportunities for growth. The DESSA looks at the following competencies outlined by The Collaborative for Academic Social & Emotional Learning (CASEL): Decision Making, Personal Responsibility, Optimistic Thinking, Self-Awareness, Social Awareness, Relationship Skills, Self-Management, and Goal Directed Behavior. The findings from this SEL assessment will help administration, teachers, and support staff provide targeted interventions to aid in student social emotional growth! If you would like to learn more about DESSA, please see this Parent Resource.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to reach out via email at kbrosch@central51.net.

Our 5th grade D.A.R.E. classes are underway! D.A.R.E. stands for Drug Abuse Resistance Education. In D.A.R.E. I am teaching your child how to use the D.A.R.E. Decision Making Model. Using this model, your child will always be in position to make the right Choice! During our 10 week course, we will cover subjects such as Safe & Responsible Choices, Resistance Strategies, Confident Communication, Bullying, Safe Reporting, etc… just to name few. Thank you all for allowing me to be a part of your children’s safety education and building a positive relationship with them through DARE.
If you have any questions you may contact me at dtaylor@ci.washington.il.us

Students are establishing routines for Trojan Time. Students completed several data gathering activities to establish areas of greatest need. Interventionists are in close communication with Math and ELA teachers each week to ensure the focus for Trojan Time supports in class learning. In October, interventionists will meet with teachers to discuss progress during our first cycle of Trojan Time. Since Trojan Time is new this year, we anticipate some productive conversations centered around best meeting student needs at every level.
For questions about math or reading success and skill building, email us at mperko@central51.net or ehahn@central51.net.

We wrapped up September with our fitness testing. The students did great and we look forward to seeing their growth throughout the school year.
Students are receiving PE grades each week based on their preparedness (PE shoes need to be worn daily), behavior, and active participation. We will continue to get outside as much as possible in October.

Hello from your friendly PTO! I have to start with the obvious…The Trojan Trot! We knew it would be a success but you sure wowed us. Over $86,000 was pledged!! We have to thank all of the wonderful teachers for letting us rearrange schedules and for helping us to spread the word on all of the different platforms. They were our connection to students and parents. You all did such an awesome job raising money! Thank you for being such good sports. Our next cheers of gratitude go to Administration. Mr. Heidbreder, Mrs. Bush, Ms. Martin, Mrs. Klein, and Mrs. Roberts really let us “take over” the school for 2 weeks and made all of our wishes come true. Mrs. Bush was such a good sport about getting silly stringed.
We could not have done this fundraiser without a ton of motivated students, generous parents and family members, and a giving community. The Trojan Trot volunteers, led by Mrs. Jessica Gibson-James, spent a lot of time and energy on this and I’m so glad that it was worth every second. We have been consumed with all things Trojan Trot so stop by our next meeting on Thursday, October 6th (at 7pm in the CIS Library) to hear about what else we have planned for this school year….*hint: ROCK is coming…..

Everyone age 6 months and older should get annual flu shots. The best time to get the influenza vaccine is before Halloween, but kids can get a flu shot at any time during flu season. (Adults need annual flu shots, too!)

The Central Care Club is formalizing many of the traditions we have been doing for years at Central such as WHIP and the Salvation Army Project. We are also hoping to add more ways to help our community as the year progresses.
Please see the attached that was sent out to 7th and 8th graders about the opportunity to join Central Care Club for details.
Mrs. J. Uftring
Student Council is busy getting back to "normal." We had a great spirit week celebrating homecoming. Stuco is starting donuts and donations again at CIS in October- this month we are giving to Susan G. Komen. (These are the first Wednesday of the month; donuts are $1). We have been planning our monthly assemblies focusing on the Central Code, creating themes for Pack the Place (girls basketball), and researching various fundraisers for the year.
