Mrs. Bush
Mrs. Bush
Dear CIS Families,
October flew by, and here we are already in November! We hope everyone had a safe and fun Halloween!
As Thanksgiving draws near, I want to extend my heartfelt appreciation to our school community. Every day, I am thankful for the privilege to work alongside Central's dedicated students, staff, and families. The honor of leading within our exceptional district is a wonderful opportunity. Thank you for your work in making Central an outstanding place for all.
We are excited to extend our 2023 Community Day Celebration by adding our "Celebrating Central Heroes" assembly. As a part of Community Day, we want to express our gratitude to local heroes and beyond.
We would love to honor those in our Central Community who serve, have served in our nation's military, or are currently working as first responders. If you and your student would like to be recognized, please complete the Celebrating Central Heroes Assembly Form.
Assembly Details
Who: Military Heroes & First Responders in the CIS Community
When: Friday, November 17, 8:30 a.m.
Where: Holford Gymnasium, Central Intermediate School, 1301 Eagle Avenue, Washington, IL 61571
If you have any questions about the assembly, please contact Mrs. Bush at ebush@central51.net.
We are excited to celebrate students during ROCK on Friday, November 3! Students should have received an invitation if they met the criteria for ROCK.
PTO has many fun activities planned for students, and we hope they have a blast! Don't forget to encourage your child to dress in their favorite holiday attire!
Our top priority at ROCK is student safety. Please review the drop-off/pick-up procedures and the map below before Friday to ensure you are aware of the pick-up/drop-off procedures.
DROP OFF
Parents dropping students off via the car-line should enter the school property from the CPS entrance (Newcastle Rd. entrance) and drive forward to the signs at the CIS New Central Gym entrance (where the window signs spell CENTRAL) for check-in there.
Parents who wish to park and walk their student to the door for check-in should enter the CIS Parking Lot from Eagle Ave and park. There will be a crossing guard for those who choose to walk up.
Anyone entering the CIS parking lot from Eagle Avenue must park! We hope this new traffic pattern will alleviate some road congestion at the start of each session.
PICK UP
Students will be exiting ROCK from the Holford Gym doors.
All parents MUST PARK and walk up to the school to pick up students. No pick-up line will be accessible after ROCK, so all parents must enter the CIS parking lot from Eagle Avenue and park.
Volunteers will not release students until they see their adult. We’re doing our best to keep everyone safe in a busy parking lot at night, so we appreciate your cooperation!
Starting Monday, November 6, the office will communicate directly with students via school email when a family member delivers a forgotten item. Our intent with this new process is to minimize disruptions during instruction. Teachers will communicate this information with students, and we encourage you to talk with your child about this new process.
Please note that families may not email students directly. Students are only able to access email from individuals within the district.
Parent Teacher Conference Sign-Up information will be shared with Central Families on Friday, November 3. Please be on the lookout via email and Skyward Family Access.
Conference Dates:
Monday, November 20: 12:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.
Tuesday, November 21: 8:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.
Now that first quarter has wrapped up, I wanted to send a reminder that Central Intermediate School offers Homework Assistance for all students on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 3:00 - 4:00 p.m. Homework Assistance is a great place for students to get assistance from teachers, get caught up on school work, or just enjoy a quiet place to work.
Families are responsible for providing transportation home from Homework Assistance, and students must be picked up promptly at 4:00 p.m.
Ms. Martin
It is hard to believe the first quarter is over! As we progress through the year, I would like to remind students of the following:
As the temps are cooling, please remember to bring a coat with you to school. We will be going outside for recess unless the temperatures are below 20 degrees.
Please help us ensure student safety by having no more than 15 people at a time on the Central Spinner. Additionally, we ask that students stay below top bar of the spinner and do not hang on the outside.
It is exciting to see Central students support their fellow classmates at extracurricular events. Please go over the following expectations with your child if they are planning to attend games at CIS:
Students should always show good sportsmanship. Actions like booing, turning backs to players, taunting, and making noises during expected silent times, and cheering against the other team do not show good sportsmanship.
Items from the concession stand are allowed in the gym. Please talk with your child about making sure their trash is picked up after games.
Students attending games must be in Holford Gym during gameplay. Students may not hang out in the Holford Lobby/Foyer during games.
If your child is planning to attend a game, please ensure a ride is arranged ahead of time.
Students, whether they are playing or not, are representing Central. Please encourage your child to be respectful to athletes and spectators. At no point should Central students talk to opponents, coaches, and officials.

CENTRAL Code - Empathetic
On Friday, October 27th, CIS held the 2nd CENTRAL Code assembly of the school year! We recognized students who display qualities of empathy. The focus for Empathetic is to encourage healthy and supportive relationships, teach skills on how to work collaboratively to solve problems, and promote communication skills. Please see the picture below of students recognized for Empathetic!
For the months of November and December, the focus will be Noble. Our next CENTRAL Code assembly will be held on Friday, December 22.
Conferences
If you have any questions or concerns about your child that you would like to discuss during Parent/Teacher conferences, please do not hesitate to reach out at kbrosch@central51.net.
Nurse Martin
We know that regular school attendance is critical for our students – they cannot learn if they are not there! For many families, then, it can be a difficult decision about when to send students to school, and when to keep them home, if they are showing symptoms of illness.
If yours student is not feeling well in the morning, you can keep them home and bring them to school later in the day if they are feeling better as long as they meet the When to Send criteria below.
Have a temperature higher than 100.4 degrees
Are throwing up or have diarrhea
Have eyes that are pink and crusty
Haven’t taken any fever-reducing medicine for 24 hours and haven’t had a fever during that time;
Haven’t thrown up or had any diarrhea for 24 hours
Have been treated for pink eye or strep for 24 hours
COVID positive students may return on Day 6 (Day 0 is day symptoms began) as long as the above criteria are met
Mrs. Perko - Reading
Conference time is almost here! Mrs. Perko and Mrs. Hahn are available in various ways to discuss your child’s progress during conferences. Your child is welcome to join you as they will have prepared something to share with you about their progress in reading and/or math. They will be thinking about their start to the 2023-2024 school year and will have some achievements to share as well as some thoughts about improvement or some goals they may have created. We would be happy to share the data we collect to talk about their progress.
You can schedule a time to meet with us individually. We can also join a meeting you may have scheduled with your grade level math or ELA teacher. Let us know what works best for you and we will get you on the schedule.
We are here to help with Math and Reading

We have officially moved into quarter two! Students that had Health class first quarter have transitioned back into PE, and second quarter Health students have started attending Health class.
While we addressed PE expectations with all students at the very beginning of the year, we would like to remind those in PE that their daily grade is based on being prepared for class with appropriate gym shoes, correctly completing our class warm-ups, behaving appropriately throughout class, and actively participating in our class activity. We have revisited these expectations with our classes since our quarter two transition.

Happy November from PTO! We are still so ecstatic that we met and exceeded our Trojan Trot goal! Since this is the season to be thankful, it’s worth mentioning again how proud we are of our students, parents, staff, administration and the community for all of the support shown to this event.
Next up, ROCK is coming November 3rd-woohoo! Students should have received an invitation if they met the criteria for ROCK. We can’t wait to see 5th/6th grade from 5:30pm-7pm and 7th/8th grade from 7:30pm-9pm. There will be lots of festivities and pizza. Feel free to get into the holiday spirit and dress up.
As always, come check out our next meeting on November 2nd at 7pm in the CIS library. Happy (early) Thanksgiving!
Mrs. J. Uftring

A huge thank you to everyone who volunteered during the Book Fair! We are excited to get new books for our library!
We will feature historical fiction and nonfiction in the library this month.
Mrs. Youngman
The Central Care Club students have been busy this month with the following:
Student helping teachers and staff throughout CIS and CPS
WHIP drive at CIS - Mrs. J. Uftring's homeroom won with a donation total of 314 items which earned them a pizza party! Mrs. Lawson and Mrs Demmel came in 2nd and 3rd with a total of 238 items and 172 items. Both classes enjoyed Rice Crispy treats for their efforts!
CPS be on the lookout for a WHIP challenge for the month of November.
Ten of our CCC students helped at the Boo Bash at the high school. This was our first opportunity to take part in the Boo Bash and we were amazed at the number of people that attended. There were over 1400 kids that took part! Luckily we had plenty of candy and we didn't run out until 7:28. The Boo Bash ended at 7:30 so we feel we did a good job of estimating how much candy we needed:)
Be on the lookout for the Coats for Kids barrels outside each school's entrance. Please consider donating your gently used coats, hats, gloves, jackets, boots, scarves, etc... for people in need.
We are preparing for CIS Community day which will occur on November 17th. Information will be coming out soon from each grade level (5-8) as to how each will be participating in Community Day. It is a fun and fulfilling day of donating our time and talent. On this day we will also be relaying information about the Salvation Army Adopt a Family Project.
