September 2022 Edition
Mrs. Bush
We are off to a great start at Central Intermediate School! Here are a few highlights:
Thanks so much to those families who attended Officer Taylor's Social Media presentation on Monday, August 15. We were excited about the turnout and plan to offer additional opportunities in the future to help educate students and families!
Students are doing a great job getting to school on time! Thank you, students and families, for adapting to the new 7:55 start time! Great job!
We love seeing so many students walk and bike to school! Students are doing a great job staying safe by watching cars and walking their bikes in high-traffic areas!
Teachers led students in the CENTRAL Code kickoff during Trojan Time over the last two weeks. Students learned ways to be Capable, Empathetic, Noble, Thoughtful, Responsible, Aware Trojans who are ready to Lead! We are excited to highlight each aspect of the CENTRAL Code throughout the school year and celebrate students who display CENTRAL Code qualities!
Students completed STAR Reading and Math benchmark testing this week. Please be on the lookout for STAR scores in the next couple of weeks.
Indoor Recess Donations
We have been lucky to experience beautiful recess weather thus far, but we know this weather will not last forever. We are asking for donations from families for games that students can play in the cafeteria or in classrooms when the weather does not allow us to get outside. Board games, card games, and decks of cards would all be appreciated!
Donations may be dropped off at the CIS Office.
WCHS Football Games
WCHS reported that Friday night football games had a positive start! Students are displaying positive behavior, and we are proud of them!
WCHS asked us to pass along a few reminders to students:
Please do not bring backpacks to the game if possible. If a student does bring one, it is subject to being searched.
Do not bring footballs to the stadium. They will not be allowed to toss them around.
Junior High students must be accompanied into the stadium by parents or adults.
Lunch Reminders
A la carte begins Tuesday, September 6th for 7th and 8th grade students. Students are allowed to purchase 3 a la carte items during lunch. Please talk with your child about how many items they are allowed to purchase for a la carte.
Communication
Please feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns at ebush@central51.net!
Ms. Martin
It has been a wonderful start to the school year! Seeing the smiling faces of students has been the highlight. We look forward to seeing the growth of all of our students through the year.
Drop off/Pick up
Thank you for making the start of the year a smooth process with drop off/pick up! It has been impressive to see how many students are arriving on time. By following the directions for drop off/pick up, you are making a difference in making certain classes start on time and students are punctual.
As a reminder, please do NOT park on Eagle or Bobolink when you drop off or pick up your child. If you choose to park in the parking lot and drop off/pick up your child, please walk with them through the parking lot. As drivers are moving through the parking lot, it can be difficult to see children walking. We want to keep all students and family as safe as possible. We appreciate your cooperation!
Mrs. Brosch
Welcome Back!
My name is Kristen Brosch. I am the school counselor at CIS. Last year, you may have worked with Mrs. Ashley Cherry, who has moved into a social work role at CIS. I was at Dunlap Valley Middle School previously as a school counselor and before that worked in community mental health for 10 years. I am so excited to be at Central Intermediate School and get to know all the students and families!
To enhance social emotional learning, CIS will be implementing CENTRAL Code this year. Over the course of the school year, different character traits will be highlighted. Students will engage in lessons about the traits during Trojan Time and students who exemplify these traits will be recognized at CENTRAL Code assemblies! For September, students will be focusing on Capable (the "C" of CENTRAL code). Teachers will be helping students identify ways to persevere, manage frustration, self-regulate, and practice grit to help them achieve their goals.
Please feel free to reach out to me if there are any concerns about your students social emotional needs. You can reach me via email at kbrosch@central51.net or by calling the school. I look forward to an awesome school year!

Mrs. Perko - Reading
CIS students are taking the STAR benchmark tests for reading and math September 30 to September 2. Data is being analyzed to provide the proper support for students in the classroom. Small group intervention also began this week. We are using time to get to know the students further through math and reading activities, interests surveys and a few smaller assessments that will allow us to differentiate instruction. If your student is new to working with us, you will have received a phone call or email from us already.
For all parents and guardians, please take some time to sign up for Renaissance Home Connect to receive instant notifications as soon as your student completes a STAR or Accelerated Reader test. The link and directions are below.
~~
Dear Parent or Guardian: Your student uses a software program called Renaissance at school. This program has a special feature called Home Connect, which your student and you can access outside of school from any computer with an Internet Connection. Home Connect allows you to view information about your student's progress. It also allows you to sign up to receive email notifications after he or she completes an activity or assessment at school. You can log in to Home Connect from any computer with an Internet Connection and compatible browser such as Firefox, Chrome, Safari, and most mobile devices..
To log in to Home Connect Website:
https://global-zone50.renaissance-go.com/studentprogress/homeconnect?t=333449
The link should bring you to the log in page for Renaissance. Please enter your student's username and password: graduation year, first initial, last name and their lunch pin. An example of an eighth grader would be 23mperko for the username. If you have any questions about Home Connect, please contact us.
We look forward to working with students to help them build necessary skills for success in reading and math this year. For questions about math or reading success and skill building, email us at mperko@central51.net or ehahn@central51.net.

We have been excited to begin our year in Physical Education at Central!
We plan to be outside as much as possible while the weather cooperates. We will be starting our first units, lacrosse and soccer, this week, while also mixing in fitness work and fun day activities as well. Fall fitness testing will take place in late September.
Our Central students do not change for PE, but please make sure they they have a pair of PE shoes to keep at school so that they are prepared everyday.

Welcome back to the friends that we know and to the ones that we haven’t met yet. The PTO has been working hard to create a new pledge-based fundraiser here at Central. We even held meetings over summer break! The Trojan Trot will be taking place Friday, September 23rd and we can’t wait to raise a ton of money and have some fun along the way! There will be prizes and activities and we need your help to make this a success. This is going to be such a great year. Also….Our next PTO meeting will be held on October 6th at 7pm in the CIS library.

Just a reminder that all medication including over-the-counter medication such as Tylenol or Advil must be in it's original bottle along with a completed medication form that includes a physician note and signature along with parent signature.
Mrs. Heffta
I wanted to take this opportunity to explain the interest level of books and what that means for our students. The interest level of a book is like the movie ratings and uses similar criteria. We use the ratings that are listed in Accelerated Reading and this is usually set by the publisher.
Designated Interest Levels
LG = Lower Grade (K-3)
MG = Middle Grade (4-8)
MG+ = Middle Grade Plus (6 and up)
UG = Upper Grade (9-12 or 7-12)
CIS requires any student in 5th and 6th grade to have parent/guardian permission before checking out any book marked UG (Upper Grade). Students in 7th and 8th grade either need a single book permission slip or use the option on the permission slip to pre-approve ALL UG books in the CIS library. Students in 4th grade are not allowed to check out any UG books and need a parent signature for MG+ books.
If you have questions about interest levels or any other library related questions please email me at sheffta@central51.net .

The chromebook carrying case will be your student's case to keep.

NK Ballistic Nylon Folio - $25.99
Cases will be shipped to the school and then delivered to your student. The school will create an ID tag to be placed in the ID holder. Please only purchase one case per student.
