Dear CIS Families,
We hope you all had a wonderful and refreshing spring break! It’s hard to believe we’re already in the final seven weeks of the school year. The fourth quarter is well underway, and plenty of learning, growth, and exciting moments are still ahead.
We look forward to a spring filled with special events and celebrations. We can’t wait to recognize our students’ hard work and welcome families into the building to join the fun!
Our second reward party for students with no detentions or suspensions is on Friday, April 25, and it will be a blast! This PTO-sponsored event is a student favorite, featuring games, hangout time with friends, and the always-popular Junk Food Buffet!
🎟️ Invitations will be sent out in the coming weeks, so keep an eye out in Skyward Family Access. Remember, ROCK is invite-only.
To help ensure a smooth and fun evening, CIS will send out a reminder of ROCK expectations during the week of the event. Please take a few minutes to review these with your child so everyone can enjoy a safe and successful night.
ROCK wouldn’t be possible without the help of our amazing parent and guardian volunteers. If you’re available, we’d love to have you join us. Sign-up info is coming soon!
While we hope warmer weather means more outdoor recess, rainy days still occasionally keep us inside. During indoor recess, our 5th and 6th graders enjoy access to the gym, but unfortunately, our 7th and 8th graders do not have the same option.
We’re incredibly grateful to the families who have donated games in the past. Your generosity has made a difference! With hundreds of students using these games regularly, many have experienced wear and tear and need replacement.
If you’re able, we would gladly welcome donations of:
Board games
Card decks (standard and non-standard, e.g., Uno, Spot It!, Old Maid, etc.)
Quick puzzles (100 - 300 pieces)
Short-activity games
Or any creative ideas for engaging indoor fun!
Donations can be dropped off in the CIS Office. Thank you for your continued support!
Just a reminder that students should only have water in their bottles during the school day. Other beverages, like soda, juice, flavored drinks, etc. are only allowed during lunch and must be in a separate container. These drinks are only allowed in the cafeteria and not on the playground.
This policy helps ensure that spills can be cleaned up quickly and prevents damage to important materials, especially Chromebooks, which sticky liquids can ruin.
Additionally, energy drinks are strongly discouraged at any point during the school day, including lunchtime, due to their high caffeine and sugar content.
If a student brings a non-water beverage in their water bottle, it will be kept in the office until the end of the day.
Thank you for helping us with this!
We’re excited to celebrate our students’ academic achievements at the upcoming CIS Awards Ceremony on Tuesday, May 13! Each grade level will be recognized during their scheduled time, and ceremonies will take place in Holford Gym.

Ms. Martin
As the temperatures warm up, it will be great to see more students ride their bikes and walk to school. In the meantime, please remember the following when dropping off/picking up your children at school:
If you choose to park in the lot, please walk with your children from your vehicle to the crosswalk. We want to make sure students are safe and seen.
Please refrain from turning left into the parking lot as this clogs traffic.
Please use caution driving through the parking lot.
Please watch out for students walking and riding their bikes around the school.
Even though we are in spring, please encourage your child to bring a coat to school. We will be going outside for recess most days and it could be chilly some of those days.
The 5th and 8th grade students will be taking the Illinois Science Assessment April 8, 9, and 10. For those students taking the test, please encourage the following:
Charge your Chromebook nightly
Get a restful sleep prior to the test dates
Eat a healthy breakfast on the days of the test
Bring a set of WIRED headphones to school on the testing dates
Bring a book to school (Students are only allowed to use their Chromebook for testing during the tests.)
Cell phones and smart watches are not permitted by students in the testing environment. All student cell phones should be in their lockers. Any smart watches worn will need to be placed on the teacher's desk while testing or placed in the students' lockers.
Mr. Coovert
Thank you everyone for the warm welcome! If you need support, please continue to use the Counselor Request or Safe2Help. Let's have a great final quarter!

Better with Breakfast
The saying goes "Breakfast is the most important meal of the day" and it is true for students heading off to school! You wouldn't go on a road trip without filling the car's tank with gas, right? Your body is the same way! It needs fuel to function optimally. Your student needs fuel to get their brain ready to learn at school. Check out this article from the American Academy of Pediatrics titled Breakfast for Learning
Seasonal Allergies
As the warmer weather approaches and spring begins to bloom, we are reminded that for many students, seasonal allergies can be a challenge. With the increase in pollen levels, allergy symptoms such as sneezing, congestion, itchy eyes, and runny nose can significantly affect a child's comfort and focus during the school day.
Starting allergy medication now, before the pollen counts rise, can help prevent symptoms from becoming overwhelming and ensure your student is better able to concentrate at school and enjoy the outdoor season.
Consult with your child's pediatrician or healthcare provider to help determine the most appropriate course of action that will work best for your child.

Five Years!
It’s been five years since everything changed in education. Lots of reflection has been shared about recovery recently. We feel thankful here at CIS for the many resources that have been layered into our district to address the unique needs of our students. A comprehensive report was released in February looking at recovery nationally. I will share some main points from the Press Release Summary .
Intervention made a difference and even though additional funding has ended, the study showed continuing these efforts is well worth the investment.
It will take a large scale effort to address continued chronic absenteeism in schools. Communities need to work together to address the root causes.
It is time to increase parent communication when students are still falling behind.
With so much data collected with many different outcomes, it will be important to look carefully at efforts with the most impact on student achievement and mental health.
There are states who have been in the news for their shining example, such as Alabama, mentioned in this press release as well as being covered on NPR and other news outlets for their efforts. Particularly in math, the transformation was rooted in student discovery and the use of tools and manipulatives instead of more traditional teaching methods. We are fortunate here at CIS to have access to many of these tools both for reading and math.
If you would like to learn more about what we do to help students, feel free to reach out to us. Mandi Perko, Reading mperko@central51.net and Elizabeth Hahn, Math ehahn@central51.net

It is exciting to have officially started the final quarter of the school year! Hopefully we will start to have warmer temperatures coming our way with the beginning of Spring. As temperatures warm up, we will be trying to get the students back outside when possible. We have reminded students to dress appropriately for the weather as we will start to make that transition back outside.

The end of the year is quickly approaching but we have a few more events that will take place before school is out for the summer.
On Wednesday, April 16th we will have a WHIP (Washington Helps its People) drive (non-perishable food items or hygiene products appreciated). This is a new and fun drive for the students and we are calling it CANS FOR CAPS. Please see the flyer below.
We are also continuing to collect gently used books for our end of the year book sale during field day, May 19th. All books will sell for $.25 and proceeds will be donated to St. Jude. Our goal is to motivate and encourage the students to read over the summer and support St. Jude. Please consider donating your gently used books for this cause!
