Mrs. Bush
Mrs. Bush
We are excited to celebrate our CPS and CIS teachers this week! Thanks so much to the PTO Teacher Appreciation Committee for planning great activities for our staff!
We are so lucky to have such an amazing and supportive staff at Central, and we appreciate all they do!
If you would like to recognize a teacher or staff member, feel free to send a Note of Appreciation!
We will celebrate CIS students at our Awards Ceremony on Tuesday, May 16 in Holford Gym during grade level PE times.
Parents are welcome to attend ceremonies in person. The ceremonies will also be live streamed: https://vimeo.com/event/3323729
The award times for each grade level will be as follows:
4th Grade: 2:13 p.m.
5th Grade: 9:19 a.m.
6th Grade: 7:55 a.m.
7th Grade: 10:01 a.m.
8th Grade: 11:25 a.m.
A big thanks to Officer Taylor for presenting information about bicycle safety presentations to 4th - 8th graders last week. Officer Taylor's presentations were relevant for students riding to and from school and in the community. I was impressed with each grade level's respect and attentiveness during the presentations. And, we appreciate our teachers for allowing us to borrow class time to focus on this safety aspect.
CIS is excited to host the 8th Grade Boys Volleyball Township Tournament this Friday, May 5 in Central Gym. We are excited to have two teams from Washington Middle School and one team from Beverly Manor joining us.
We are using the tournament as an opportunity to give back to the community by making "admission" one item for WHIP, and we are excited to have CIS Central Care Club members help us coordinate donations.
Students who wish to purchase snacks at the concession stand may bring cash. Thanks to CIS Student Council for helping sell concessions!
Location: Central Gym (Please enter through the Central Gym Lobby)
Time: 5:30 p.m.
Admission Price: One item for WHIP
We are already busy planning for next school year, and one of our areas of focus is scheduling for the following school year. In order to provide a positive learning environment for all students, there are several factors our staff takes into account. These factors include special education needs, classroom accommodations, reading and math needs, teacher instructional approaches, and student needs that contribute to learning.
While parents are welcome to provide information in order to help us plan for the next school year, we can not guarantee placement with any particular staff member for the upcoming school year. If you feel that there is an extenuating circumstance that should be shared with us or have information you wish to share about your child that may assist with placement and schedules for next school year, please submit that information via email by Friday, May 14, 2023 to the building principal.
As we continue to increase family engagement opportunities at CIS, I am gathering information on families interested in participating in a school-sponsored family book club this summer. We will choose a nonfiction book that focuses on topics relevant to middle school students.
I am excited about the possibilities of this opportunity! If you want to join, please complete the form below by Wednesday, May 24.

Hello CIS families!
It seems like it was just the beginning of the year, and yet, here we are at the end of the school year. The staff and students have accomplished a lot this year and we are proud of their successes.
8th Grade Students
Congratulations on finishing your journey at CIS! You have worked hard and you are ready for your next step. Hopefully, you can look back at your time at CIS with fond memories. Best wishes as you move on to the high school!
Teacher Appreciation
Thank you to PTO, community members, family volunteers, and students for helping make Teacher Appreciation week amazing! It is wonderful to see how much people appreciate the dedication and hard work our staff puts in through the year. We are very thankful to have such an amazing staff!
Summer Activities
There are many activities in the summer for students to participate in. Click HERE for a list of camps and their information. Don't forget to look at community resources to see what is offered for your child as well.
To the families, community members, students, and staff, thank you for another great year at CIS! This district is a great place to be a part of and I look forward to seeing everyone back in the fall. Have a wonderful and restful summer!
Mrs. Brosch
CENTRAL Code
On Friday, May 5, we will have our last CENTRAL Code assembly of the school year! Due to the early dismissal on March 31, we had to cancel the scheduled assembly for Aware. So, on May 5, we will be recognizing students for both Aware and Lead. The rollout of CENTRAL Code this year has been met with excitement from students and we look forward to continuing next year.
Social Media
During the summer months, students may find themselves using social media to connect with friends. A great resource for parents to learn about different social media platforms, read parent guides to movie/video game reviews, and learn about online safety monitoring strategies is Common Sense Media. In addition to free resources, parents can sign up to get their emails with great tips and information on how to help middle schoolers navigate the everchanging world of technology and social media.
If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out at kbrosch@central51.net.
Additional Parent/Family Resources:

Medication Pick-Up Reminder
All medication kept at school must be picked up by a parent or guardian. Students are not permitted to transport medications home. All medication not claimed by July 1st will be disposed of via a drug-take-back-program.
5th Grade
All students entering 6th grade in August will need the following medical forms completed at the beginning of the year:
Illinois School Physical Form (A sports physical cannot be accepted in place of the School Physical. However, the Illinois School Physical can be accepted in place of a sports physical.)
Updated Immunizations needed: Tdap & Meningococcal Vaccines (Students must be 11 years old to receive the Meningococcal vaccine so keep that in mind when making your student's appointment)
Dental Exam Form - Due May 15, 2024 but we can accept dental exams dated as early as November 15, 2022 so feel free to turn in your students most recent dental exam anytime!
These forms can be turned into the office during the summer or may be scanned (pictures cannot be accepted) and downloaded to my email: kmartin@central51.net.
Medical Forms:
Sports Physical Form - Expires 1 year and 1 month from exam date. Students must have a recent exam form on file in order to tryout and continue participation in a sport. Please make sure parent and student signatures are also completed.
Medication Administration Form - This is for all medications including prescriptions and over-the-counter medications. A physician signature and parent signature is required and must be renewed yearly.
Food Allergy Action Plan - If your student will have an EpiPen at school, Illinois requires a Food Allergy Action Plan on file that is renewed yearly.

Staying Connected to Learning in the Summer

Another great resource is the Washington District Library in Washington and Sunnyland. Both branches have an excellent book selection for your avid OR picky reader. Get set up with a library card and dive into a good book. Washington District Library
Attached is a recommended Summer Reading List. It is important to continue to read 20 minutes a day over the summer. One list in particular is the Rebecca Caudill Young Readers’ List. It is composed of top editors’ picks of young adult literature. A mixture of fiction and nonfiction this list always has many fan favorites. Rebecca Caudill List 2024
For math, many of the same resources students use at school to supplement their math learning can also be used at home over the summer a couple of times a week. Students in 6th and 7th grade will still have access to IXL. IXL already knows your student’s strengths and weaknesses and will give them problems to solve they are ready to learn.
https://www.ixl.com/signin/central
Select students in grades 5 and 7 have been using a program called ALEKS they also have access to over the summer. It is similar to IXL and gives students problems based on their current learning path.
Students in 4th and 5th grade have also been using 99math to work on their math fluency. https://99math.com/
For students looking for a math challenge, there are some interesting problems at a Stanford based site called you cubed https://www.youcubed.org/tasks/ There are also some collaborative games to boost math thinking at Cambridge Based nrich.com https://nrich.maths.org/12752
Have a great summer!

Hello! I can’t believe it’s May! We’ve had such a successful (and fun!) year that kept us all very busy. Some of our exciting projects will be coming to life next school year and we can’t wait to show you what we’ve been brainstorming. This week kicks off Teacher Appreciation and it’s a great time to show the staff how much they mean to us. PTO has lots of treats planned for this week and much thanks goes out to Molly H. and her crew for putting it all together. Prize Patrol is wrapping up for the year and Heather R. and her helpers deserve a shout out for encouraging our kiddos to love reading. We’d also like to congratulate the 8th grade class and wish them well on their next adventure into high school. Please join us for our last regular PTO meeting on May 4th-at 7pm- in the CIS library. Have a wonderful summer break!

Successful April food drive for WHIP!
At CPS Mrs. Wulf's class won the pizza party. Miss Turner's class and Ms. Sunderland's class tied for the donut party!
At CIS Mrs. Hartzler's class won the pizza party and Mrs. Webster's class won a cupcake party!
Additionally, we set a school wide goal of 2,500 items. If we exceeded that total we promised a school wide pajama day. I am happy to announce that we collected 2,674 items for WHIP all together! To celebrate we had a school wide pajama day on Friday (4/21/23)!
Thank you to everyone who contributed. The people at WHIP are extremely thankful:)
Literacy Week
Our CCC also contributed to literacy week by handing out McDonald coupons for hamburgers and ice cream cones to students we caught reading. We passed out over 100 coupons! Keep reading Central!
Supporting the Seguin Family
During the month of May we will have a Candy Fundraiser for the Seguin family:
We will sell the following packages of candy to 6th, 7th, and 8th graders:
Sour Patch Kids
Starbursts
KitKats
Hershey bars
Twix
M & M
and more!
All of the proceeds will be donated to the Seguin family to support Eileen and her family.
The candy will be sold by the Central Care Club members. CCC members will sell candy in the mornings (come to the atrium outside of Mrs. Youngman's room) and members will come around to classrooms during study halls and Trojan Times.

CIS Families!
Happy Summer! It feels like we just started the school year and yet here we are in May. All Chromebooks will be inspected before summer break to check for any hardware issues and document damage. For the summer, please store the Chromebook at home in a safe location along with the charger. They should only be used over the summer for enrichment or school related activities, please do not take the Chromebook on vacation.
Have a wonderful Summer and we will see you in the Fall! :)
If you have any questions, please contact me at whaight@central51.net
Mrs. Heffta
Thank you to all the families who visited the book fair and a huge thank you to Julie Diers for volunteering!
We also had Literacy Week in April. We watched a video about a football player who improved his reading game. We looked at a lot of different books and I challenged students to improve their game this summer. The Washington Public Library is a wonderful summer resource and students can access Destiny Discover ebooks and audiobooks.
