Dear Families,
We hope all of you are having a wonderful start to March!
PTO hosted and awesome CIS Trivia Night on Monday, February 6. The theme was "Are you Smarter than a Fifth Grader," and included questions from first through fifth grade. Everyone who participated had a great time, and we are so thankful to all the students, staff, and families who attended! Congratulations to Team Caffeinated Curriculum on winning!
Extracurricular opportunities are a great way to get involved, build relationships, and explore interests outside of academics. It is never too early to start looking at extracurricular opportunities for the 2024-2025 school year!
Look at the Extracurricular Code of Conduct to see what is available!
Currently, we are facing a shortage of substitute teachers. We believe that a strong community effort can help alleviate this situation.
If you or someone you know has the qualifications and availability to serve as a substitute teacher, we would greatly appreciate your assistance. Substitutes play a vital role in ensuring that our students receive quality education even when regular teachers are unavailable.
Please click HERE for information on how to obtain and substitute license in Illinois and HERE to apply.
It's never too early to start thinking about ROCK! The second and final CIS ROCK is scheduled for Friday, April 19.
ROCK is a reward party for students with no detentions/suspensions between Monday, February 12 and Friday, April 12.
Look for more information about ROCK from PTO later this winter!
As always, please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or concerns!

Welcome Spring! As temperatures have been nicer, please continue to remind students at home to bring a coat to school in case the temperatures drop. We will be going outside as much as possible!
A huge congratulations to Coach Demmel and the cheerleaders! They recently earned 2nd place at the IESA State Tournament. They put on a stellar routine and did a fantastic job!
During the week of March 11, 2024, students will be completing the IAR test on ELA and Math. Students and teachers have been working very hard this year and we look forward to them showing off their skills!
To help ensure they are set up for success, please encourage the following at home as we are reinforcing this at school, too:
Charge your Chromebook nightly
Get a restful sleep prior to the test dates
Eat a healthy breakfast on the days of the test
Bring a set of WIRED headphones to school on the testing dates
Bring a book to school (Students are only allowed to use their chromebook for testing during the tests.)
Cell phones and smart watches are not permitted by students in the testing environment. All student cell phones should be in their lockers. Any smart watches worn will need to be placed on the teacher's desk while testing or placed in the students' lockers.

For the month of February, the focus for CENTRAL Code was responsibility. Our CENTRAL Code assembly was held on February 28th during the Wednesday SEL time. Our focus for March will be Aware, which corresponds to the DESSA Competency of self-awareness. Our next assembly will be on March 21st, right before Spring Break!
If you or your child have any questions or concerns that you think I can help with, please do not hesitate to reach out to me at kbrosch@central51.net.

Mornings are busy! In the rush to get ready and get out the door on time, sometimes breakfast can get overlooked or forgotten. Breakfast helps students have better concentration, memory and attention. Breakfast does not have to be elaborate or consist of "traditional" breakfast foods. Almost anything your student likes to eat will do!
Grab and go breakfast ideas:
Yogurt
Cereal bars
Fruit - fresh or dried
Muffins
Smoothie
Dry Cereal
Applesauce
Peanut butter & jelly sandwich
Bagel

That Time of Year is Here Again: IAR
What can parents and caregivers do at home to help prepare their child for this important yearly test? For many students, testing can be a source of great anxiety. While there isn’t a lot of recent research about how parents can prepare students for maximum achievement, there are some common sense suggestions. An article from Scholastic ( Click here ), suggests it is best for all grown ups in a student’s life (teachers included) to simply remain calm and supportive. If adults have a negative attitude about the test, it could influence how students feel and perform. An older study of students from a demographically similar school in Arkansas (Study link here) used a survey to link parent attitudes about tests with student test results. While the study can’t point to cause and effect, there was an interesting correlation between the pressure parents felt to help their children prepare for tests and student scores. Students of parents who felt the greatest pressure scored the lowest. So breathe a sigh of relief that the best thing you can do for your child is to build their confidence and send them well rested to the test the week of March 11th. Your student will do the rest! We finished our volleyball unit with our students vs teachers games in February. The pictures of the teams the teachers played are below. What a great way to end up our unit!
We also finished round 2 of FitnessGram testing in February. We will test one more time at the end of April.
We've started a unit in Pickleball. This is a new unit for us and we are really enjoying learning about the game with our classes.
Just a reminder as the weather turns warmer we will be taking the opportunity to go outside. Make sure students are dressed appropriately to go outside. As always, please remind your children to wear their PE shoes daily.
