Dear Families,
It is hard to believe that we are almost through our first semester! I am continually thankful for the opportunity to be a part of the Central Community and wish you all a wonderful holiday season!
December is an exciting month at CIS! Activities are in full swing, and we are excited about our upcoming winter music concerts! See the dates for upcoming events below.
Parent Teacher Conferences
Thanks to our families who attended Parent Teacher Conferences in November. Conferences provide a great opportunity to strengthen the partnership between school and home, and we are thankful for your support.
Homework Assistance Transportation
We are excited to announce that CIS will offer transportation following Homework Assistance on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays beginning Tuesday, December 6. Thanks to our transportation department for helping us get this opportunity up and running! All students, even those who do not qualify for transportation to and from school, may use transportation for homework assistance. Homework Assistance is from 3:00 - 4:00 p.m.
Please see the process below for utilizing this opportunity:
Transportation Procedure for Mandatory Homework Assistance
If your child needs transportation home from Mandatory Homework Assistance, a parent must complete the grade level Google Form linked below. Links will also be available on grade level websites and Google Classrooms.
If transportation is needed, the Google Form must be submitted at least one day before the scheduled homework assistance.
Once the form is submitted, the child’s teacher and the transportation department will receive a notification.
Transportation for Non-Mandatory Homework Assistance
Some students choose to stay for homework assistance for a quiet place to work or to get assistance from teachers. These students are also welcome to utilize transportation. To access the transportation form, please complete the form below that corresponds with your child’s grade level. This must be arranged with the teacher ahead of time.
If your child regularly stays for Homework Assistance and could benefit from transportation, please contact your child’s homeroom teacher to set up regular transportation.
If transportation is needed, the Google Form must be submitted at least one day before the scheduled homework assistance.

Benchmark Testing
Benchmark testing will take place Monday, December 12 through Friday, December 16. Please see Mrs. Perko and Mrs. Hahn's section below with some test taking tips!
8th grade parents/guardians, please remind your child that winter benchmark scores are one factor in determining high school placements. The results from the reading and math STAR benchmark scores will be sent to the high school along with teacher recommendations and semester grades.
If you have any questions about the self-assessment, please do not hesitate to reach out to me at ebush@central51.net.

Happy Holidays! Can you believe the first semester is almost completed? Time has gone quickly! During this holiday season, I hope you are able to take time to relax and enjoy time with family.
As we are in the colder months, recess may be indoors when the temperature is below 20 degrees. Thank you to those families who have donated games this year! CIS is always looking for games to provide students to play with during recess time. If you are willing to donate any games, please see some examples from students: normal playing cards, Uno, Apples to Apples, Taco-Cat-Goat-Cheese, Sorry, Chess and others
In the case we are outside, please reinforce with your child that they should have warm gear for outside as we don't want them to be cold. In the case you need assistance with getting warm gear for your child, please let the CIS office know and we will try to assist in getting warm items.
There are many items in the lost and found. All lost and found items will be donated on Tuesday, December 20. Classes will be taken to the vestibule to look at the items to make sure students are finding anything that belongs to them. Please remind your child to look through the items before they are donated.
For student safety, please make sure your child is walking with an adult through the parking lot. There are many cars going in various directions and we do not want anyone to get hurt. It is difficult to see students in the parking lot at times and this added step will help ensure student safety. We appreciate your cooperation!

Hello! Because the months of November and December have multiple breaks, we have continued to focus on Noble this month for CENTRAL Code. We will conclude our focus of Noble at the end of the month and begin to focus on Thoughtful for January.
Though the excitement of winter break is in the air, we are continuing to encourage students to finish 1st semester strong! Please remind students to keep up with their academic success routines, such as using their planners, checking the online classroom platforms (Skyward, Google Classroom, and grade level websites) to keep track of assignments, maintaining organized folders/notebooks, dedicating time to study prior to the night before a test, and breaking larger projects into smaller pieces. The use of checklists and to do lists can be a great resource for students as the many moving pieces of a semester come to a close. Please see the attached weekly to do list and general to do list! If your student would like an already printed copy, just have them stop by my office! As always, if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out at kbrosch@central51.net.
Have a wonderful Holiday Season!

With a semester almost behind us, it will be time to check in on student progress with STAR again the week of December 12, 2022. As always, please help us by encouraging your students to give their best effort and get plenty of rest and a hearty breakfast to prepare for their tests. Teachers will review the data at the beginning of January and make any changes needed to the support students are receiving in reading and math. Don’t hesitate to reach out to us if you have questions or concerns.
For questions about math or reading success and skill building, email us at mperko@central51.net or ehahn@central51.net.

Happy Holidays!
Quarter 3 health will start when we return from Winter Break on January 4th, 2023. Current health students will return to PE at that time. We will make sure to notify the students ahead of time if they have health during quarter 3.
Enjoy the holiday season with your loved ones!

Hello from PTO! I can’t believe December is already here! Huge thanks to Molly Hofmann and her super creative Teacher Appreciation team for putting together the staff dinner during conferences. It is a lot of planning and hard work and they did an awesome job. Another round of thanks goes to Michael’s, Beck’s, and all of the parents that sent in donations. Our next meeting is January 5th at 7pm in the CIS library. Hope to see you there!

Ways to Have a Healthy Holiday Season
Wash hands often to help prevent the spread of germs. Remember 20 seconds is the key!
Bundle up to stay dry and warm
Manage Stress - Give yourself a break if you feel stressed out, overwhelmed and out of control
Fasten seat belts while driving or riding in a motor vehicle and allow yourself plenty of time to arrive when the roads are slippery.
Get your flu shot. Family gatherings are not only a wonderful part of holidy traditions, but also a perfect set up for virus transmission.
Prepare food safely. Wash hands and surfaces often, avoid cross-contamination, cook foods to proper temperature and refrigerate foods promptly.
Eat healthy, stay active. While you partake of holidy treats and goodies, make sure you are getting your fruits and veggies in too for a nice balance:)

Winter Book Bingo time! We are very excited to play book bingo when we get back from break. Students can count books that they read during break so encourage them to get started on their bingo cards! There are small prizes for each bingo and there will be a homeroom drawing too. Who will have the first bingo?
If you are looking to clean out books, we are happy to take them off your hands. You can send them with your students or drop them off in Holford Entry.

WHIP: The CCC has been busy collecting WHIP items from all of the classrooms in primary and intermediate and we collected over 4,000 items in the month of November! WHIP came on Monday morning with a caravan of cars and trucks to help take all of the items to the food pantry and the eighth graders helped load the items. The WHIP volunteers have expressed repeatedly over the years how much they appreciate Central's commitment to helping stock the shelves to help Washington families in need.
Community Day: Our first Central Community Day was a great hit! Students learned about veterans, made cards for nursing homes, decorated grocery bags for Lindy's customers and book marks for the public library, read to primary students, donated time at area Goodwill locations, and so much more. We ended the day with an assembly celebrating our contributions to our community.
Salvation Army Project: The following letters were sent home at the end Community Day. We are currently very busy with our Salvation Army Project. This project has become a tradition at Central and this is our nineteenth year of adopting families through the Salvation Army during the Christmas season.
Mrs. J. Uftring
Happy Holidays from StuCo. Donut Day is Wednesday, December 7th. Donuts are sold in grade-level locations before school. Student Council is having an optional "Disguise a Penguin" Art Contest. Flyers are attached on announcements and in hallways. Also, be watching for a holiday spirit week starting December 12th- December 20th.
In addition, focusing on Kindness and our Central Code focus word of Noble, students have created an optional Central Kindness Advent Calendar.
Thank you to all who bought the Trojan Army shirts. These can be worn to get in free to home basketball and volleyball games.
