8th Grade Graduation
It is hard to believe that our CIS Class of 2023 will be graduating in just four months! Graduation will be held at WCHS Babcook Field on Thursday, May 18 at 6:30.
See the flier at the bottom of the newsletter for more graduation details.
Benchmark Reports and Renaissance Home Connect
Most students completed benchmark testing in December. Those reports will be coming home with students on Friday, January 14.
Please take some time to sign up for Renaissance Home Connect for online access to your students' progress. Home Connect allows you to sign up to receive email notifications after he or she completes an activity or assessment at school.
To log in to Home Connect Website:
https://global-zone50.renaissance-go.com/studentprogress/homeconnect?t=333449
The link should bring you to the log in page for Renaissance. Please enter your student's username and password: graduation year, first initial, last name and their lunch pin. An example of an eighth grader would be 23mperko for the username. If you have any questions about Home Connect, please contact us. We are looking forward to working with students to help them build the necessary skills in reading and math this year. For questions about math or reading success and skill building, email us at mperko@central51.net or ehahn@central51.net.

Happy New Year!
I hope you all had the opportunity to spend time with family/friends and some time for relaxing. It is great to see staff and students back in the building. We look forward to a great last half of the school year!
While students are going to and coming from school, we want them to be as safe as possible. In the interest of the student’s safety and in compliance with State law, students are expected to observe the following while riding a school bus:
Dress properly for the weather. Make sure all drawstrings, ties, straps, etc. on all clothing, backpacks and other items, are shortened or removed to lessen the likelihood of them getting caught in bus doors, railings or aisles.
Arrive on time at the bus stop, and stay away from the street while waiting for the bus.
Stay away from the bus until it stops completely and the driver signals you to board. Enter in a single file without pushing. Always use the handrail.
Take a seat right away and remain seated facing forward. Keep your hands, arms, and head inside the bus.
Talk quietly on the bus. No shouting or creating loud noises that may distract the driver. Tablets, iPods®, iPads®, smart phones, and other electronic devices must be silenced on the bus unless a student uses headphones.
Help keep the bus neat and clean. Keep belongings out of the aisle and away from emergency exits. Eating and drinking are not allowed on the bus.
Always listen to the driver’s instructions. Be courteous to the driver and other students. Sit with your hands to yourself and avoid making noises that would distract the driver or bother other passengers. Remain seated, keeping your hands, arms, and head inside the bus at all times.
Wait until the bus pulls to a complete stop before standing up. Use the handrail when exiting the bus.
Stay out of the danger zone next to the bus where the driver may have difficulty seeing you. Take five giant steps away from the bus and out of the danger zone, until you can see the driver and the driver sees you. Never crawl under a bus.
If you must cross the street after you get off the bus, wait for the driver’s signal and then cross in front of the bus. Cross the street only after checking both ways for traffic.
Never run back to the bus, even if you dropped or forgot something.
Please see the image below indicating areas of protentional hazard for students and areas most appropriate for students to wait and load onto the bus.
Thank you for your continued support at home!

Happy 2023! It seems the first half of the school year flew by! I hope everyone had a fun and relaxing break! If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out at kbrosch@central51.net.
CENTRAL Code
For the month of January, we are focused on the "T" of CENTRAL Code, which stands for Thoughtful. During SEL time, we will focus on thinking of others, but also thinking about their own thinking. Students will learn the difference between Growth Mindset and Fixed Mindset. These terms were coined by Professor Carol Dweck (her TedTalk is linked below). Fostering a Growth Mindset results in increased perseverance and teaches students that simply because a subject matter or skill doesn't come naturally to them, then can put in the effort and learn. The opposite of Growth Mindset is Fixed Mindset, which is thinking that if you are not naturally talented at something, there is little point to trying. Building a Growth Mindset is an important piece of being successful academically, but also in many other endeavors! Please see the Parent Resources below and discuss with your child what they have learned during SEL time!
Mid-Year Reflection and Goal Setting
The start of 2nd semester often feels like a fresh start! This is a great time to reflect with your child on what they did well during 1st semester and something they want to improve upon. And, having a conversation with your child about what they want to work towards for the remainder of the school year would be an awesome opportunity to incorporate Growth Mindset!

Keep Your Child Home If:
They have a Fever of 100.4 or above. Your child may return to school once they have been fever free for 24 hours without the use of medication.
They have had diarrhea or vomiting in the past 24 hours. Your child may return to school once they have been without diarrhea or vomiting for 24 hours.
Mrs. Perko - Reading
We all know the statistics about sticking to New Year's resolutions. We all may have even fallen victim to broken resolutions sometime in our lives. Resolutions are often about creating new habits. This year in Trojan Time, we have emphasized a theory from the book, Atomic Habits, by James Clear called “Habit Stacking.” Mr. Clear encourages us to link new habits to established habits for greater success maintaining the habit long term. It may sound simple, but we built from the habit they have of entering the classroom. We created a succession of new, highly productive habits connected to entering the room to make sure students use the precious moments at the start of our time together to prepare for learning. When students seem unsure about what to do, it is easy to just say ‘Habit Stacking” to remind them of the routines we use to support the habit of starting class ready and on time. Maybe your student would like to read more or get homework finished earlier, practice their math facts daily, or learn a new skill. Consider adding the new activity right after an existing habit to help them find the time and commitment they need to add this new habit to their routine in 2023!
For questions about math or reading success and skill building, email us at mperko@central51.net or ehahn@central51.net.

Happy New Year!
Please make sure your child has shoes for PE that they can run in. Since returning from break, some students have new shoes they don't want to crease. If that is the case for your child, they need to change into a different pair of shoes for PE class so they can participate in the activity.
Round 2 of fitness testing will begin Monday, January 23rd. We will be doing the push up test, curl ups, the beep test, and sit and reach. No mile run this time!
