Dear Families,
We hope the start of the school year has been positive for students and families. It was so exciting to welcome students back in August!
Students completed the Fall Star Benchmark testing last week. Please be on the lookout for those reports this Friday, September 6. A letter about Star Benchmarking will also be emailed to families this Friday.
Attendance is an essential part of academic success for students, and it is our goal that students are at school and on time each day.
We understand there will be times when students cannot attend school due to illness or emergencies. When this is the case, please communicate with the school office. After ten absences, absences without a doctor’s note are considered unexcused. Three unexcused absences may result in a referral to truancy, depending on the circumstances. Please note that the office will accept doctor’s notes or documentation from previous appointments and adjust attendance accordingly.
Students are expected to be in classrooms and ready to learn by 7:55 daily. Students who are not in the classroom ready to learn by 7:55 will be marked tardy. Students who earn three tardies will receive a detention.
If you have any questions about attendance or tardies, or if your student or family needs support with attendance or tardies, please contact Mrs. Bush (ebush@central51.net) so we can work together.
The first ROCK (Rewarding Outstanding Central Kids) is scheduled for Friday, October 25. Students with no detentions or suspensions will receive an invitation to ROCK in October.
We look forward to celebrating our students!
We are excited to announce that starting Tuesday, September 3, CIS will offer transportation for 4th through 8th grade students following Homework Assistance on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. This service is available thanks to our transportation department, and we hope it will be a valuable resource for our students.
Homework Assistance runs from 3:00 to 4:00 PM (CPS Homework Assistance starts 3:15 PM until 4:00 PM) on these days, and transportation will be provided for all students who wish to use it, even if they do not qualify for regular school transportation.
Here’s how to use this service:
Transportation Procedure for Mandatory Homework Assistance
Form Submission: Please complete the Google Form linked below if your child requires transportation home from Mandatory Homework Assistance. Forms are also available on grade-level websites and Google Classrooms.
Timing: Forms must be submitted by 3:00 PM the day before transportation is needed.
Notification: Once submitted, the form will notify your child’s teacher, the transportation department, and the office.
Transportation for Non-Mandatory Homework Assistance
Students who stay for Homework Assistance to have a quiet place to work or receive extra help are also welcome to use transportation.
Form Submission: Complete the form linked below according to your child’s grade level and arrange this with your child’s teacher ahead of time.
Regular Use: If your child regularly stays for Homework Assistance and would benefit from transportation, don’t hesitate to get in touch with your child’s homeroom teacher to set up a regular transportation plan.
Submission: Forms must be submitted by 3:00 PM the day before transportation is needed.
We’re looking forward to supporting our students and making Homework Assistance more accessible.

Ms. Martin
Welcome back CIS students! We are so glad to have you back in the building ready to learn!
Thank you for making the start of the year a smooth process with drop off/pick up! By following the directions for drop off/pick up, you are making a difference in making certain classes start on time and students are punctual.
As a reminder, please do NOT park on Eagle or Bobolink when you drop off or pick up your child. If you choose to park in the parking lot and drop off/pick up your child, please walk with them through the parking lot. As drivers are moving through the parking lot, it can be difficult to see children walking. We want to keep all students and family as safe as possible. We appreciate your cooperation!
While students are going to and coming from school, we want them to be as safe as possible. Mrs. Bush and Ms. Martin reviewed the procedures/expectations with all students at the beginning of the year. We would appreciate any reinforcement at home!
In the interest of the student’s safety and in compliance with State law, students are expected to observe the following while riding a school bus:
Dress properly for the weather. Make sure all drawstrings, ties, straps, etc. on all clothing, backpacks and other items, are shortened or removed to lessen the likelihood of them getting caught in bus doors, railings or aisles.
Arrive on time at the bus stop, and stay away from the street while waiting for the bus.
Stay away from the bus until it stops completely and the driver signals you to board. Enter in a single file without pushing. Always use the handrail.
Take a seat right away and remain seated facing forward. Keep your hands, arms, and head inside the bus.
Talk quietly on the bus. No shouting or creating loud noises that may distract the driver. Tablets, iPods®, iPads®, smart phones, and other electronic devices must be silenced on the bus unless a student uses headphones.
Help keep the bus neat and clean. Keep belongings out of the aisle and away from emergency exits. Eating and drinking are not allowed on the bus.
Always listen to the driver’s instructions. Be courteous to the driver and other students. Sit with your hands to yourself and avoid making noises that would distract the driver or bother other passengers. Remain seated, keeping your hands, arms, and head inside the bus at all times.
Wait until the bus pulls to a complete stop before standing up. Use the handrail when exiting the bus.
Stay out of the danger zone next to the bus where the driver may have difficulty seeing you. Take five giant steps away from the bus and out of the danger zone, until you can see the driver and the driver sees you. Never crawl under a bus.
If you must cross the street after you get off the bus, wait for the driver’s signal and then cross in front of the bus. Cross the street only after checking both ways for traffic.
Never run back to the bus, even if you dropped or forgot something.
Thank you for your continued support at home!
Students at CIS have multiple opportunities to join various activities and athletics. We encourage students to get involved in whatever extracurricular they find interesting. As students get ready for next year, please take a look below to see what extracurriculars we offer at Central.
Mrs. Brosch
On September 25th, we will have our first CENTRAL Code Assembly! CENTRAL Code is a school-wide SEL initiative that teaches the following character traits: Capable, Empathetic, Noble, Thoughtful, Responsibility, Aware, and Lead. Each letter represents an SEL Competency of the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning.
At assemblies, students who are nominated by their teachers for going above and beyond in exemplifying these character traits will be recognized! For the month of September, we will focus on Capable. Capable represents the competency of Self-Management, which is defined as an individual's success in controlling their emotions and behaviors to complete a task or succeed in a new or challenging situation.
If you or your child have any questions or concerns that you think I can help with, please do not hesitate to reach out to me at kbrosch@central51.net.

Medication Authorization Form completed by healthcare provider and parent.
Medication must be in it's original bottle. Baggies of medication cannot be accepted.
Mrs. Perko - Reading
Students are completing the Fall STAR benchmark tests for reading and math the week of August 26. The data is being analyzed to provide the proper support for students in the classroom and small groups. Small group time has been underway. If your student is working with us, you will have received a phone call or email from us already.
Your student uses a software program called Renaissance at school. This program has a special feature called Home Connect, which your student and you can access outside of school from any computer with an Internet Connection. Home Connect allows you to view information about your student's progress. It also allows you to sign up to receive email notifications after he or she completes an activity or assessment at school. You can log in to Home Connect from any computer with an Internet Connection and compatible browser such as Firefox, Chrome, Safari, and most mobile devices. All parents and guardians, please take some time to sign up for Renaissance Home Connect! This will allow you to receive instant notifications as soon as your student completes a STAR or Accelerated Reader test. The link and directions from Renaissance are below.
~~Home Connect Directions
***When in doubt, have your students log into their Renaissance STAR account and then follow the directions on the link from there! Our goal is to get as many parents to sign up as possible for Renaissance Home Connect!
Again, here is the link to log in to Home Connect Website:
https://global-zone50.renaissance-go.com/studentprogress/homeconnect?t=333449
The link should bring you to the login page for Renaissance. Please enter your student's username and password: graduation year, first initial, last name and their lunch pin. An example of an eighth grader would be 23mperko for the username.
We look forward to continuing our work with students to help them build the necessary skills in reading and math this year. For questions about math or reading success and skill building, email us at mperko@central51.net or ehahn@central51.net.
If you have any questions or concerns about the intervention program at CIS, please reach out. Mandi Perko mperko@central51.net. Elizabeth Hahn ehahn@central51.net

PE
We have been happy to have our students back in PE for the start of this new school year. We spent the first week reviewing our PE procedures and class expectations with students, and want to share those with parents and guardians as well.
Students earn 4 points a day (20 points per week) in PE class. They get a daily point for wearing appropriate PE shoes (being prepared), completing our warm-ups as directed, demonstrating appropriate class behavior, and actively participating in the activity. These things are checked daily and are what determine the students' weekly grades.
We will go outside for PE as much as the weather allows us to throughout the fall. We told all students that they should come prepared to go outside each day to enjoy the nice weather before we are forced inside in the winter.

Every class has been to the library and we have over 1000 books checked out! It was so great to see all the students!
If you are looking to clean out books, we are happy to take them off your hands. You can send them with your students or drop them off in the Holford Entry.
We want to give a huge thank you to the PTO and every one who supports them. They enable us to purchase new books, events and supplies for the library!
