Mrs. Bush
Hello CIS Families!
March flew by, and here we are almost to spring break! I hope all of our students and families enjoy spring break! Hopefully the weather will cooperate so we can enjoy the outdoors.
Playground Update
Construction is underway for the new CPS and CIS playgrounds! Our custodial crew is working to prepare the areas for new equipment, and we are excited to see the project take shape this spring and summer. A huge thanks to our Facilities Director, Brandon Dash, for overseeing the project as well as the custodial crew. We are also proud of our students for their flexibility as their play areas are limited. It will be worth the wait!
Thank You, Paraprofessionals!
We celebrated our CIS Paraprofessionals on Friday, March 31 with treats. I want to take a moment to thank these individuals for their hard work and commitment to students. Our students and staff are so lucky to have you!
Feel free to send these dedicated individuals a note of appreciation over spring break!

Spring is here!
Students and staff have worked hard through IAR testing and we are so proud of the effort from everyone. Thank you, families, for helping students arrive on time and mentally prepared to take on the IAR testing.
We are looking forward to Spring Break and the spring temperatures. It will be great to see more students ride their bikes and walk to school as temperatures warm up. In the meantime, please remember the following when dropping off/picking up your children at school:
If you choose to park in the lot, please walk with your children from your vehicle to the crosswalk. We want to make sure students are safe and seen.
Please refrain from turning left into the parking lot as this clogs traffic.
Please use caution driving through the parking lot.
Please watch out for students walking and riding their bikes around the school.
Have a restful Spring Break!

CENTRAL Code
It's hard to believe we are almost through CENTRAL Code for this school year! The Friday before spring break, we held our assembly for Aware and 33 students were recognized by their teachers for demonstrating social awareness and healthy decision making! Upon return from spring break, we will focus on Lead. Students will have SEL lessons about leadership and goal-directed behavior in Trojan Time. Our final CENTRAL Code assembly will be held on May 5. Have a great spring break!
If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out at kbrosch@central51.net.

Spring is finally here! Warm weather also means spring allergies while we are trying soak up the much needed fresh air and sunshine! This can lead to itchy watery eyes, itchy, bumpy skin, scratchy throat, runny stuffy nose, sneezing, coughing and wheezing which could be signs of allergy or asthma.
Here are a few home tips to helping with milder allergy symptoms:
Wash your hands and face or take a shower and change clothes after being outside. Pollen in the air lands on our clothes and hands...once you touch your face, eyes, etc this can make symptoms worse. Washing the pollen off can help!
If eyes get itchy, watery or red, washing hands with soap and water and then applying a wet cloth to eyes or using an eye wash can help.
Always contact your child's primary care provider before starting an allergy medication regimen.

Observations about Critical Thinking
As we work with students in small groups or individually, we enjoy hearing their thought process. We learn so much about how we can help students when they learn to listen to their inner academic voice and share those thoughts with us. A common theme is for students to jump to calculations or conclusions quickly without thinking deeply about what they have read. There may be many reasons including anxiety and uncertainty. We love to create a safe environment where they can practice expressing their academic thoughts.
According to a Lumens Learning article ( Reading Article), there are some questions you can pose to encourage deeper thinking in reading. You can try these at home when you read with your student at any level.
What’s happening? Gather the basic information and begin to think of questions.
Why is it important? Ask yourself why it’s significant and whether or not you agree.
What don’t I see? Is there anything important missing?
How do I know? Ask yourself where the information came from and how it was constructed.
Who is saying it? What’s the position of the speaker and what is influencing them?
What else? What if? What other ideas exist and are there other possibilities?
For math deep thinking, encourage these thought patterns commonly identified by teachers as indicators of high performing math students reported by Solution Tree:
Practice composing and decomposing numbers
Think flexibly about numbers
Estimate a solution and check its reasonableness
Choose established strategies to solve problems
Express how one concept is related to another
Develop stamina to read and understand a word problem before trying to solve it
Talk about mathematics and mathematical thinking

As the weather warms up, please make sure your child is bringing a coat to go outside. We will go outside for PE on days that the weather conditions allow for us to do so.
Students in Health class during 2nd quarter have rotated back into PE, which means new students have been welcomed into Health class during 4th quarter. Mr. Rogers has been exploring ideas to acquire training equipment for students to have hands-on experience providing CPR and first aid emergency care. Please reach out to Mr. Rogers at grogers@central51.net if you are aware of any community connections that would assist in acquiring training equipment such as CPR mannequins, trainer AED's, and other first aid supplies. If you or someone you know works in the field of emergency medicine and would be willing to share their knowledge and skills with our students, please let Mr. Rogers know!

Hello from PTO! March sure was a busy month around Central. PTO hosted a super successful and informative Meet the Candidates to introduce those running for school board…thank you to everyone involved. Don’t forget to vote April 4th! Huge thank you to our Teacher Appreciation Committee for showing the staff how lucky we are to have them. We were able to meet with administration and brainstorm some fun projects that will hopefully come to fruition soon. The pastry fundraiser was amazing-thank you to everyone that participated! Please come out to Tres Rojas on 4/28 from 5-8pm for a fun night out to meet some fellow Central parents. Have a safe Spring Break and we hope to see you at our next meeting on April 13th at 7pm in the CIS library.

Mrs. Youngman
Central Care Club's first ever TAPS drive was a huge success! Our Central families are always so generous and we are thankful! The students packed Mrs. Youngman's SUV with supplies and we also sent a check for $45 to TAPS. TAPS was extremely grateful for all of the items and money!
Additionally we had a food/supply drive for WHIP. We challenged all of the classes to bring in WHIP items with an incentive of a pizza party for first place and a donut party for second place. Additionally a school wide pajama day was promised if we met a goal of 2,500 items.
As always, Central students delivered!!!!!
CPS winners: Mrs. Wulf's class - pizza party and Mrs. Turner's class - donut party
CIS winners: Mrs. Hartzler's class - pizza party and Mrs. Webster's class - donut party
AND....WE EXCEEDED THE 2,500 GOAL! CENTRAL FAMILIES DONATED A TOTAL OF 2,674 ITEMS! A SCHOOL WIDE PAJAMA DAY IS BEING PLANNED (DATE TBD).
