Mrs. Bush
Central Families,
We hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving break and enjoyed time with your families. It is hard to believe we are already halfway through second quarter!
Thanks to all of the families who attended parent-teacher conferences! We heard great feedback from staff on conferences and appreciate the involvement from our families. If you were not available for conferences and have questions for any of your child's teachers, please feel free to reach out.
Thanks to Molly Hofmann and PTO Teacher Appreciation for providing dinner on Monday, November 20! Dinner was delicious, and we appreciate the time you took to set everything up.
I'd like to share a valuable resource tailored to teenagers called Character Lab. It's a nonprofit organization that collaborates with educators and researchers to explore the factors contributing to the overall well-being of young people in various aspects, including social, emotional, academic, and physical health. You can subscribe to Character Lab Tip of the Week for quick reads about informative topics. Feel free to subscribe HERE.
I came across Character Lab as a middle school teacher, thanks to Angela Duckworth's insightful book, "Grit." Dr. Angela Duckworth, a former middle school teacher and researcher, expands on the idea of a growth mindset with her concept of Grit. One of my favorite quotes from the book is, "Talent is important, but effort counts twice." If you're interested, I highly recommend giving it a read if you work with teenagers in any capacity!

Central Intermediate School extends heartfelt thanks to our esteemed board members for their invaluable support:

Mr. Matt Rampenthal - Board Vice President
Mrs. Michelle Unes - Board Secretary

Mrs. Amy Johnson - Board Member

There are only three weeks of the second quarter left! The last day of the quarter is Friday, December 22, and report cards will be published on Friday, January 12.
If you are not actively checking Skyward, please take some time to look at your child's grades this weekend. We would love all of our students to be caught up with any work that needs to be completed so they can handle it before winter break.
Remember, Homework Assistance is available to all students on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 3:00 - 4:00 p.m. Homework Assistance is a great opportunity for students to get help on current or missing assignments or have a quiet place to work.
If you have questions about your child's grades or assignments, please contact your child's teacher.
Community Day was a fantastic way to kick off Thanksgiving break! Thanks to the hard work of Mrs. Youngman, Central Care Club, and our students and staff, everyone had a great day!

Happy Holidays! During this holiday season, I hope you are able to take time to relax and enjoy time with family.
As we are in the colder months, recess may be indoors when the temperature is below 20 degrees. CIS is always looking for games to provide students to play with during recess time. If you are willing to donate any games, please see some examples from students: normal playing cards, Uno, Apples to Apples, Taco-Cat-Goat-Cheese, Sorry, Chess and others.
In the case we are outside, please reinforce with your child that they should have warm gear for outside as we don't want them to be cold. In the case you need assistance with getting warm gear for your child, please let the CIS office know and we will try to assist in getting warm items.
There are many items in the lost and found. All lost and found items will be donated after Friday, December 22. Classes will be taken to the vestibule to look at the items to make sure students are finding anything that belongs to them. Please remind your child to look through the items before they are donated.
Thank you so much to all the families helping make dropoff/pickup go smoothly! As a reminder for student safety, please make sure your child is walking with an adult through the parking lot. There are many cars going in various directions and we do not want anyone to get hurt. It is difficult to see students in the parking lot at times and this added step will help ensure student safety. We appreciate your cooperation!
Mrs. Brosch
Because the months of November and December are shorter, we are focusing on Noble for both months. At CIS, there are number of initiatives during this time of year that promote giving back, thinking of others, and making a positive difference in the community. Prior to Thanksgiving Break, all CIS students participated in Community Day. In addition to Community Day, teachers watched out for acts of kindness the week of November 13th and completed kindness coupons for students they "caught" being kind. At the afternoon Community Day assembly, 2 coupons were drawn from each grade level and those students get to pick a friend to have a Jimmy John's lunch with at school on Friday, December 1st! In December, the Central Care Club will lead the Salvation Army project to help families in need during the holiday season. Our Noble assembly will be held on December 22.
An email will be sent to parents soon regarding SEL time on Wednesday, December 6. Fifth grade teachers will be talking with students about the importance of reporting concerns to safe adults, while 6th-8th grade students will learn about/review the Safe2HelpIL website and how to utilize the platform to report safety concerns. The Safe2HelpIL lesson will be the same as last year, so it will be new to 6th graders, but review for 7th and 8th graders. An opt out option will be included in the email that is going home to families. We encourage all families to review the website and talk with their student. HERE is a link to Safe2HelpIL. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out at kbrosch@central51.net.
I hope you have a relaxing winter break!

It's Cold and Flu Season....
As we enter the holiday season, it is also cold and flu season in addition to COVID, strep, etc. It is a great time to remind our school community of the measures we can to take to help keep students healthy and prevent the spread of communicable diseases.
Students can help by washing their hands frequently, eat healthy foods, drink plenty of water and get at least 8 hours of sleep per day.
Students should stay home if they are sick . For example:
Student are to be be fever-free for 24 hours WITHOUT the use of a fever reducing medication before returning to school.
Students with vomiting or diarrhea are to be symptom free for 24 hours before returning to school.
Students diagnosed with strep by a medical provider should remain home until they have completed 24 hours of prescribed antibiotic.
Students with symptoms of pink eye (bloodshot eye along with drainage & watering of eye) should remain home until evaluated by a medical provider. If a diagnosis of pink eye is received, the student should remain home until they have completed 24 hours of the prescribed antibiotic eye drops.
Student diagnosed with COVID via test at providers office or home test can return to school on Day 6 as long as all the above guidelines are met. (Day 0 = Day symptoms begin or day test performed if symptom free) Please notify the office so we can properly adjust attendance and notify teachers of need for homework.
Thank you for reinforcing these healthy habits with our students! If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at: kmartin@central51.net or 309-444-3943 Ext: 2404
Mrs. Perko - Reading
With a semester almost behind us, it will be time to check in on student progress with STAR again the week of December 11, 2023. As always, please help us by encouraging your students to give their best effort and get plenty of rest and a hearty breakfast to prepare for their tests. Teachers will review the data at the beginning of January and make any changes needed to the support students are receiving in reading and math. Don’t hesitate to reach out to us if you have questions or concerns. Mandi Perko, Reading mperko@central51.net and Elizabeth Hahn, Math ehahn@central51.net

As the weather has forced us inside, we have started our basketball unit in PE. We are currently working on basketball skills such as dribbling, passing, and shooting. We will have a 3v3 basketball tournament during our unit to implement those skills in a game setting. We look forward to watching them play!
As always, please remind your child to wear their gym shoes to PE class.

Hello from PTO!
We have been staying busy and it definitely takes a village. I have to share our appreciation for wonderful staff members(in both buildings), helpful and generous parents, and readily available administrators. All of these parts work together and make our group even stronger. Come check out a meeting and see what exciting things are in the works. Our *last meeting of 2023* will be held December 7th at 7pm in the CIS library.
Wishing everyone a happy and healthy holiday season!

The Central Care Club is in full swing for the holidays. We sponsored a WHIP food drive the week before Thanksgiving at CPS. CPS responded in a big way!!!! They brought in approximatey 4,000 items. Mrs. Sweeny's class won the pizza party for the most items donated.
We are also in the middle of our Salvation Army project and donations are piling up! Thanks to all the Central Families and students who contribute and make a difference in the lives of these families in need. Please see the letter below. A version (depending on the grade level) of this letter should have made its way home with your child. If you have any questions please email me at jyoungman@central51.net.
After break we will prepare for our first New to You Book Sale. Christmas break would be a great time to clean out the book bins and shelves in your house. Please consider donating your gently used books for our spring sale. All proceeds will go to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Send your gently used books in with your student or drop them off in the CPS or CIS offices.
Collectively we make a big difference!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Youngman and the CCC
