Happy March!
We are so excited to be heading into spring with our students! Warm weather is coming soon, and we can't wait for our students to be able to enjoy the outdoors!
Playground Project
The district's playground project will be starting this week, so the current playground areas will be impacted. Students can still use the blacktop during recess, but some areas will be off-limits during the project. We are excited to see the project and can not wait for the finished product!
ROCK
Our second ROCK on Friday, February 24, was a success! Students had a great time playing games, running through the inflatable obstacle course, playing Zombie tag, and rolling around during Human Hungry Hungry Hippos! A huge thanks to PTO and all of the parent volunteers to making ROCK a fun event for students!
Coffee Concert
Thanks to our students, staff, and volunteers who helped make the Coffee Concert a success. We love opportunities to highlight our talented students and amazing fine arts teachers!
Communication
Please feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns at ebush@central51.net!

Hello CIS families!
Recess
March is here and we are getting excited for nicer weather outside! As the weather can be wet and dreary, it would be helpful for students to have an extra pair of dry shoes in their locker in case they get wet at recess. Please remind your child to bring a coat to school as the cooler temps are still here.
Bus Expectations
We want to make sure all students arrive to school and home safely. Here are a couple of reminders for students any time they are riding the bus:
Students should be sitting in their assigned seats at all times.
Students should not be consuming food on the bus.
If students are listening to devices, they should have earbuds/headphones.
Students should keep voices at an appropriate level so there is no shouting.
If students see something that the bus driver should be alerted about, please encourage them to speak with the driver, Mrs. Bush, or myself. Thank you for reminding your child of these safety precautions!

CENTRAL Code
At the end of February, we held our CENTRAL Code assembly for Responsibility and 33 students were recognized by their teachers! We have now moved on to the "A" in CENTRAL Code, which stands for Aware. During this month, we will work on social awareness, including being a good friend, managing conflict, working together, and accepting differences. In middle school, students are learning how to make and maintain friendships, which includes managing conflict in those relationships. I wanted to share with you some strategies I find helpful when working with students on conflict resolution. In most cases, I remind students the importance of talking to the person they are having a conflict with directly and not talking about that person to others or posting things about the conflict to social media. Then, I help them follow the CLUES!
C - Communicate promptly, assertively, and respectfully
L - Listen to the other person's point of view
U - Understand their perspective
E - Explore options & solutions
S - So... how did it go (evaluate where things stand)
If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out at kbrosch@central51.net.

Just a reminder to make your appointment with your child's Primary Care Provider and Dentist now for your student's 6th grade physical, immunizations and dental exams that are due at the beginning of next year. Sports physicals are not able to be accepted in place of the 6th grade Illinois School physical requirement.

Your Students Have Been Preparing for IAR Testing. How Can You Help?
CIS teachers have been pouring over last year’s State Testing (IAR) scores to make intelligent decisions about areas students need to work on most. A lot of targeted student work is happening in Trojan Time. We are so thankful for this time to focus on skills we know students need most in reading and math.
What can parents and caregivers do at home to help prepare their child for this important yearly test? For many students, testing can be a source of great anxiety. While there isn’t a lot of recent research about how parents can prepare students for maximum achievement, there are some common sense suggestions. An article from Scholastic ( Click here ), suggests it is best for all grown ups in a student’s life (teachers included) to simply remain calm and supportive. If adults have a negative attitude about the test, it could influence how students feel and perform. An older study of students from a demographically similar school in Arkansas (Study link here ) used a survey to link parent attitudes about tests with student test results. While the study can’t point to cause and effect, there was an interesting correlation between the pressure parents felt to help their children prepare for tests and student scores. Students of parents who felt the greatest pressure scored the lowest. So breathe a sigh of relief that the best thing you can do for your child is to build their confidence and send them well rested to the test the week of March 20th. Your student will do the rest! For questions about math or reading success, email us at mperko@central51.net or ehahn@central51.net

As the weather warms up, please make sure your child is bringing a coat to go outside. We will go outside for PE on days that the weather conditions allow for us to do so.
Fourth quarter health students will begin attending health on Monday, March 13th. We will welcome 3rd quarter health students back to PE on that same day.

Hello from PTO!
February was filled with a few Valentine’s Day parties, some Prize Patrol, and….ROCK! We could not have done any of these activities without such awesome committee chairs and willing volunteers. Tons of hard work and hours of planning are spent on these events and it does not go unnoticed. March brings our Perfect Pastry fundraiser that will wrap up on 3/13. Sell some delicious treats and you might win a gift card from PTO! We are also very happy to host Meet the Candidate night on March 15th (at 7pm in the new gym) for a chance to come out and get to know the people running for school board. Our March meeting is this Thursday at 7pm in the CIS library. See you there!
Mrs. J. Uftring
March 1st is Donuts and Donations. Donations are going to the Seguin family here at CIS (we will take other monetary donations at this time for the family.)
Croc Jibbitz are still available to purchase- please send your child to Mrs. J. Uftring (room 17) if interested.
Be on the lookout for spirit days. Student Council will also host an assembly March 31st.
Students at CIS have also started Trojan Code -Army of Kindness. The Google Form is found on announcements. This is a great way to give a shoutout to a friend, classmate, teacher, etc. and spread kindness.

It's March Madness in the tech department! We are officially in the month of testing. IAR will take place March 20th-31st. It is super important that students are on their "A" game, by having their Chromebook charged and ready to go for testing everyday.
Mrs. Heffta
March Madness in the library! We are having a genre playoff with brackets and changes to win. Students can also try their lucky picking books in March with fun activities.
Save the date! Spring Book Fair will be April 24-27 and we are hosting Literati Fair at CIS. We will also have literacy events all week for students and families!
