November 2022 Edition
Mrs. Bush
Happy November!
It is hard to believe we are this far into the school year and gearing up for Parent Teacher Conferences already!
561 students attended ROCK on Friday, October 28! Students enjoyed the junk food buffet, indoor gaga ball, 9 square in the air, basketball, Legos, cards, trivia, a scavenger hunt, and more! It was fun watching our students enjoy these fun activities for their great behavior and attendance in first quarter! A huge THANK YOU to our parent volunteers for helping keep the event safe and fun for students!
This ROCK was very special for the heads of the CIS Activities PTO Committee, Rebecca Wulf and Courtney Meinhold. Friday's ROCK was their last time heading up the event as they are passing the torch to Brittany Dorf and Melissa Gilles. CIS students, staff, and families thank Mrs. Meinhold and Mrs. Wulf for their commitment to CIS students!
The next ROCK is scheduled for Friday, February 24. Students with no detentions, suspensions, or unexcused absences between Monday, November 28 and Friday, February 10 may attend ROCK.
Students and staff enjoyed Halloween parties (4th & 5th) and snack carts (6th - 8th) on Monday, October 31. Students ate Halloween treats, played games, watched movies, and many enjoyed the CPS Halloween Parade. Thanks so much to the staff and parent volunteers to made Halloween fun at school!
We are looking forward to Parent Teacher Conferences on the following dates:
Monday, November 21 from 12:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.
Tuesday, November 22 from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
If you have not already done so, please access the 22-23 Parent Teacher Conference Sign-Up Hub HERE to sign up for conferences.
We are excited to see you!
Social Emotional Learning (SEL) continues to be a priority for all teachers and staff at Central Intermediate School. Students and staff have been working through year one of the CENTRAL Code, and it has been exciting to see students recognized for exemplifying Capable and Empathetic!
During the week of November 14, students will complete an online Social/Emotional self-assessment. The purpose of this online assessment is to inform teachers, staff, and school leaders in planning SEL instruction and support for students.
If you have any questions about the self-assessment, please do not hesitate to reach out to me at ebush@central51.net.
Communication
Please feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns at ebush@central51.net!
Ms. Martin
As the cooler temps are among us, please encourage your child to bring a coat to school. We will be going outside for recess any day that is 20 degrees or above.
If your child is interested in playing gaga ball during recess, they are encouraged to wear gloves to protect their hands from making contact with the ground. Hopefully, this will help keep their hands from getting scraped.
Is your child missing a coat, sweatshirt, or lunchbox? There are many items in the CIS lost and found. If your child is missing items, please have them check the lost and found racks near the office. They can check before/after school or during class with their teacher's permission.
As a reminder, the school day starts at 7:55 AM every day. To maximize learning time, students must be in their seats ready to learn by 7:55 AM. If you child checks in at the office at 7:55 AM, they are still considered tardy to class. After three tardies, your child will be issued a detention to be served after school. If your child was at a doctor's appointment, please have them bring a note so we can excuse the tardy and it will not count towards a detention.
A friendly reminder for those that are picking up and dropping off their students, please make sure to escort your child to the crosswalk. There are many cars going in multiple directions and we do not want to see anyone get injured. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated as we want everyone to arrive safely at school
Check out the flyer below to see what CIS is doing to help it's community members through the month of November!

CENTRAL Code
It's hard to believe that we are already working on our 3rd character trait of the school year! We are now focused on Noble! During the months of November and December, students will focus on learning about self-awareness, identifying their strengths, and doing the right thing even when no one else is watching. By increasing a child's awareness of strengths, it can also increase their self-esteem. Please talk with your student about self-awareness and what they have learned about themselves!
As always, if you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to reach out via email at kbrosch@central51.net.

We look forward to the opportunity we will have this month to conference with parents! We will be prepared to share details about student progress as well as our observations. We also look forward to meaningful dialogue about how we can maximize our support for students. If you would like to set a meeting with either of us, we have sign ups at the conference hub. We are happy to answer questions or update you any time if conference week doesn't work for you. We look forward to celebrating the growth of students so far this school year.
For questions about math or reading success and skill building, email us at mperko@central51.net or ehahn@central51.net.

Mr. Rogers - Health
Mrs. Miller - Health
We would like to welcome Mr. Rogers, our new Health teacher, to Central! Mr. Rogers started on Monday, October 31. He is excited to be joining our Central staff.
Thank you to Mrs. Miller for her work in our Health classes this year!
We have started to see more students arriving to PE without gym shoes on. This will become increasingly important as we begin to spend more time inside during the coming winter months. The students are reminded that having proper PE shoes on is part of their daily grade.

Hello from PTO! October was a busy month! We celebrated our WONDERFUL principals, Mrs. Bush and Ms. Martin, and…. ROCK came back. As always, it was a great night and lots of fun for students and volunteers. PTO would like to thank Rebecca Wulf and Courtney Meinhold for years of planning and creativity. They are a great team and we appreciate all of their hard work. Not to worry, Melissa Gilles and Brittany Dorf stepped up and will carry on the junk food buffet tradition :) 4th and 5th graders received a visit from the AR Prize Patrol and earned some cool rewards. Shout out to Heather Fuchs for encouraging a love for reading.
Our next meeting is this Thursday, December 1st at 7pm in the CIS library. Hope to see you there!

Lice can be contracted any time of the year, but cases increase during the winter months. While sharing hats, combs/brushes, hair ties, and pillows during sleepovers, etc can pass on cases of head lice, any head to head contact (think about those fun selfies with besties!) can increase the risk of acquiring lice.
The best prevention of spread is to check your student’s head at home, frequently, especially after head-to-head contact situations such as sleepovers and extended play dates.
You will want to check your student’s head thoroughly for the following:
Small silvery nits(egg) fixed to the hair shaft. It may look like dandruff but will not move easily from the hair shaft.
If nits are present, look for live lice. Beware they are fast!!
Treatment can be completed at home or by a professional lice removal service. Please see the links below for more information regarding treatment or call your student’s primary care provider.
Prevention is the key! Please remind your child to do the following:
Try to avoid head-to-head contact
Don’t share combs, brushes, hats, scarves, bandanas, ribbons, hair ties or any other personal care items with anyone else.

A huge thank you to everyone who volunteered during the Book Fair! We are excited to get new books for our library! November the library will feature historical fiction, realist fiction and biographies.
If you are looking to clean out books, we are happy to take them off your hands. You can send them with your students or drop them off in Holford Entry. I will distribute them to libraries and classrooms in both buildings.
Mrs. Youngman
Central Care Club has already been very busy this year.
The 8th grade student helpers are very busy helping teachers and staff during their study hall time. Their generosity with their time is much appreciated!
WHIP items are much appreciated and the students are continuously collecting WHIP items, checking dates and organizing the items to be delivered at the end of each month. WHIP appreciates any non-perishable item as well as toiletry items.
Coats for Kids barrels are located outside in the entrance of both the primary and intermediate schools. Please see the attached flyer created by Emma Lowry. Coats for Kids flyer

Student Council had a great month with our community event at WCHS. CIS had 9 booths at the high school's Boo Bash! We also had our Empathy assembly last week. For our monthly focus our students collected socks for Socktober. CIS collected over 1600 pairs!
This month 7th and 8th graders will have their first dance of the year on Friday, November 11th from 7:30-9. The theme is Hawaiian. Admission is $3; snacks are free and drinks are $1.
We want to thank Ron's donuts for providing donuts for donut day for over a decade. We are continuing our tradition by getting donuts from Casey's. Our donations this month will go to the Kevin Brown Memorial.

With the holidays quickly approaching and stores beginning to discount accessories, now is a great time to invest in a Chromebook carrying case or hard shell cover if you don't already have one. Amazon, Walmart, Best Buy, Target and other resale companies start offering awesome Black Friday deals for technology accessories.
Kids love to decorate and customize their stuff, especially with the custom sticker craze. Having a carrying case or hard shell to customize (since putting stickers on their school device is not allowed) this is a great way to "Make it their own".
To find a case or cover compatible with their device:
