Section 2.1 Students explore the history of computing Students research a representative list of people who were important in the evolution of computing systems
Section 4.7 Using bits to represent text An activity with the ASCII system leads to a discussion & exploration of bias in technology. Students develop a set of Culturally Authentic Protocols to follow when they are designing programs and artifacts.
Section 4.12 Introduction of ARC Challenge #4 The class data analysis activity leads to a discussion on cultural considerations and demographics in data collection.
Section 5.3 Students research algorithmic bias Students listen to a TED talk about algorithmic bias, research other examples and modify their Culturally Authentic Protocols accordingly. They also learn about the Design Thinking process and how it can reduce the likelihood of algorithmic bias.
Section 5.6 Power and Data Mining Students critically evaluate whether data mining is or can be used to create power.
