CRD-1.A.6 Information gathered from potential users can be used to understand the purpose of a program from diverse perspectives and to develop a program that fully incorporates these perspectives.

The objective for this lesson is to understand how tempo and pitch are related to mood. This background knowledge will aid in the design of the musical introduction tempo and pitch of the instrument tracks to attempt to elicit the mood desired by the client.Â
In addition this lesson introduces the setEffect function, of the EarSketch API library, that allows the programmer to modify a sound sample.
Activity 4.3.1 (55 minutes)
Have students watch the first 30 seconds of the Lion King video that has no sound. This can be done at the beginning of class or as a flipped assignment. Then have students watch example 2 [at 1 minute] with sound for 30 seconds then ask them to compare the feeling of the music in example 3 [at 1 minute 35 seconds].
While watching the video, have students make their own guided notes about the difference in mood between the feeling of example 2 and example 3.
After the video, have students get into small groups. Each group answers one of the following questions:
What was the difference in tempo between example 2 and 3 (play a little bit of each again if necessary)?
How did the difference relate to how you felt?
Show PPT slides 6 to 8 on musical tempo, related mood, and tempo in EarSketch.
Make sure students can't see your video and can only hear your audio for both 6 and 7 below except for the ending question to show them if their movie guess was accurate.
Play the beach scene from Jaws for 20 seconds and ask the students the following questions:
Was the tempo up slow, medium, or fast?
Was the pitch of the sounds low bass, midrange, or high pitch treble?
What was the feeling they got from this combination of tempo and pitch?
If they haven't already told you ask them if they know what movie this is from (if they don't know show them the video with the music)?
Next, play the Forrest Gump trailer for 20 seconds and ask the students the same questions:
Was the tempo up slow, medium, or fast?
Was the pitch of the sounds low bass, midrange, or high pitch treble?
What was the feeling they got from this combination of tempo and pitch?
If they haven't already told you ask them if they know what movie this is from (if they don't know show them the video with the music)?
Show PPT slide 11 on pitch.
Last, show PPT slide 4, then without showing the video, play the 8 second intro of the Google Recruitment video with the same questions.
Was the tempo up slow, medium, or fast?
Was the pitch of the sounds low bass, midrange, or high pitch treble?
What was the feeling they got from this combination of tempo and pitch?
If they haven't already told you ask them if they know what tech company this video is from (if they don't know show them the video with the music)?
