Weathering and Erosion Outdoor Observation

MS-ESS2-2 Construct an explanation based on evidence for how geoscience processes have changed Earth’s surface at varying time and spatial scales.

Learning Target

  • Understand how the Earth's surface has been affected differently by the forces of weathering and erosion..

Success Criteria

  • students observe three locations to identify the impacts of weathering and erosion
  • students determine the amount of impact caused by weathering and erosion

Questions to Ponder

  • Do you think weathering or erosion has more of an impact on the Earth's surface?
  • Where have you seen the most weathering and erosion where you live?

Outdoor Observation

  • We will observe three different locations to see examples of weathering and/or erosion.
  • As you collect your data, answer the following questions about each site:
    1. Did you observe weathering or erosion or both at this site?
    2. Describe what you saw.
    3. To what extent was the surface of the Earth impacted by weathering and erosion?
