History of the Jews

The arrests against Jewish residents of Sanremo on behalf of the SS began in the autumn of 1943. At the moment of the German occupation, 130 Jewish individuals were known to reside in the city.

The community, however, received the support of Gentiles, such as several fishermen who carried entire families to safety by crossing the nearby French border waters between 1938 and 1940.

The SS arrested 34 Jews on the night between November 25 and 26, 1943. Almost all of them were sent to concentration camps, and only one had been able to return home.

Among the names of the people who were captured figure those of:

Edwige Norzi (Guido's sister)

Guido Norzi and Anna Luciana Norzi

Vittorio Ottolenghi
