A heart valve normally allows blood flow in only one direction. There are four heart valves that determine the pathway of blood flow through the heart. A heart valve is opened and closed through differential blood pressure on each side.
The two atrioventricular (AV) valves are between the atria and the ventricles:
mitral valve (also called the bicuspid valve) - between the left atrium and left ventricle.
tricuspid valve - between the right atrium and right ventricle.
The two semilunar (SL) valves are between the ventricles and the arteries leaving the heart:
aortic valve - between the left ventricle and the aorta.
pulmonary valve - between the right ventricle and the pulmonary trunk.
