The broad ligament of the uterus is the wide fold of peritoneum that connects the sides of the uterus to the walls and floor of the pelvis. It forms when the uterus and ovaries push up into the peritoneum during development. It is parietal peritoneum. The broad ligament can be divided into 3 parts: 1. the mesometrium is the majority of the broad ligament, and connects the body of the uterus to the lateral wall of the pelvic cavity. 2. the mesovarium is the part of the superior region of the broad ligament that contains the ovary. 3. the mesosalpinx is the most superior region of the broad ligament, and contains the uterine (= fallopian) tube.
