The anterior vagal trunk is a continuation of the left vagus nerve contribution to the esophageal plexus. It condenses from the esophageal plexus on the distal part of the esophagus and consists primarily of fibers from the left vagus nerve, but also contains a few fibers from the right vagus nerve. It passes through the esophageal hiatus of the diaphragm and gives off the following branches:
(1) Hepatic branches - to the liver.
(2) Celiac branches - to the celiac plexus.
(3) Anterior gastric branches - to the stomach.
