The posterior vagal trunk is a continuation of the right vagus nerve contribution to the esophageal plexus. It condenses from the esophageal plexus on the distal part of the esophagus and consists primarily of fibers from the right vagus nerve, but also contains a few fibers from the left vagus nerve. It passes through the esophageal hiatus of the diaphragm and gives off the following branches:
Celiac branch - to the celiac plexus.
Posterior gastric branches - to the stomach.
