Laryngeal prominence

Commonly called the “Adams apple”, as the laryngeal prominence is typically larger in males than in females.  The laryngeal prominence is the anterior attachment of the vocal ligaments (vocal cords).  The larger laryngeal prominence in men is associated with longer vocal cords, and a longer cord will vibrate at a lower frequency, thus men typically have lower voices than women.
