PLANES EXPLAINED

WHAT IS A PLANE?

A flat, two-dimensional surface that extends infinitely far. A plane can be defined in any of the following ways

A plane is uniquely determined by any one of the following:

Three non-collinear points (points not on a single line).
A line and one point not on that line.
Two distinct but intersecting lines.
Two parallel lines.

WHY ARE PLANES IMPORTANT?

To create the shape of a part, a sketch (we will cover sketching later) must be created on a plane or surface. Selecting the appropriate plane or surface for the sketch

DEFAULT PLANES ON ONSHAPE

Onshape has three default PERPENDICULAR planes that INTERSECT each other at an ORIGIN.

Planes with a 3D Object

Top Plane: View of an object looking down from a helicopter (Bird's Eye View)

Front Plane: View of an object standing in front of an object

Right Plane: View of the right side of an object.
