Welcome back! We hope you and your loved ones had a relaxing and enjoyable holiday.
This week has been slightly different to normal as we have had 4 days of school, one of which has been Sports Day. The children demonstrated all the skills they have been learning during their PE lessons. It was particularly pleasing to see the encouragement being shown by our parents and students not just for their teammates but for other children too.
In English this week, we have been completing our unit of study on Wolf Brother. We have been writing our own chapters that run parallel to the story. The children took great pride in their work and put into practice many of the narrative fiction elements they have been learning throughout term one. We also began our new unit on William Shakespeare. This week, we have been using our comprehension and research skills to find information about him. We are now creating non-chronological reports based on William Shakespeare’s achievements and key milestones. The children were fascinated to learn about such a key character from history.
In math this week, we have started our unit on Fractions. We have focussed on equivalent fractions as well as unit and non-unit fractions. The children needed to use their knowledge of times tables to complete their challenges well. Some of the children have been reminded to practise their times tables outside of school. It is a type of knowledge that needs to be repeated regularly for it to be remembered and recalled with automaticity.
In science, we have begun our new unit, Materials. We have begun by reviewing the different types of materials, the properties they have and what purposes they serve.
The homework has been shared with the children in class; further information can be found on Google Classroom. Please ask your child to plan when they will complete their homework. They should ask their teachers if they need further support before the end of school on Wednesday.
Reading - Please read for 20 minutes per day and record this in your P.O. Please record the book title and page numbers and ask an adult to sign when they have either heard you read or have discussed your reading with you.
Read Theory - Complete an hour of Read Theory quizzes online.
Spelling - No spelling this week as school is closed on Thursday.
Maths - Set by the maths group teacher.
Please make sure that your child is reading aloud to an adult most of the time, not alone. Also, please always try to discuss books with your child in order to develop their understanding and build interest.
Dear Parents
We would like to welcome you to our annual Sports Day event for Year 5 and 6 students on the above date from 8:00 – 1:15. The activities are based on those that the students have been participating in during regular PE lessons. The schedule for the day’s events is as in the table below.
Spectators will be allowed in the sports halls, but are requested to wear flat shoes. Please feel free to wear house colours to add to the atmosphere. Students are requested to come to school in their PE kit and bring hats and water bottles. They will not need their school uniform to change, as the Sports Day runs for the majority of the day.
Upon entering, please ensure you wear your parents badge at all times. If you do not have a parent badge, or are bringing relatives who do not have a BSM badge, please sign in with the security guards either at the top or bottom car park. They will issue you a badge to wear at all times which then needs to be returned to the security team on departure.
There will be a break between 9:30 - 10:30 am. I am sorry but we do not have catering facilities available on site and parents will be asked to leave the site for this one hour period so that break sessions and other activities can go ahead in the space.
We anticipate the event will finish around 1:00 pm. All children will need to return to their classrooms to collect their belongings. If you would like to take your child at this time, please collect them from their classroom so that their class teacher can sign them out. Please note that you will not be able to take siblings at this time. Siblings in other year groups should be collected at their usual time. If your child has an ECA on this day they are still expected to attend.
We have limited parking available in the school. Please do not park in the top car park as we have EYFS and KS1 pick up happening before the end of Year 5 and 6 sports day.
The bottom car park will be made available for parents to park in the two drop off lanes in the underground carpark between 07:50 am until 1:15 pm. It is essential that no-one parks down the middle of these lanes as this will cause an obstruction for anyone trying to leave. We would ask that you do not park any earlier than 07:50 am. Parents must vacate the drop off zones by 1:20 pm at the latest. In addition to this, there are 45 spaces outside the bottom car park and more parking outside school premises on Al Nadhayer street, Way 1949 and Way 1947. Where possible, we would ask families to carpool to reduce congestion in the car park.
We hope you will join us.
Sincerely,
Mr. O’Sullivan
Primary PE Coordinator
