Thank you so much to all our fathers for coming in and spending some time with your children! The Fathers Day activities were great fun! What a collection of Super Hero parents!
The children have continued reading ‘The Enormous Turnip’’ this week as part of our Monster Phonics activities. They have been introduced to longer polysyllabic words and have had fun breaking one whole word into parts.
Our English work is now full of creative opportunities. The children have been given a wealth of pictures and images. They use these as a stimulus to writing captions, sentences and stories.
This week the children have been busy practising compound words with known digraphs and trigraphs (e.g bedroom/lipstick/popcorn/pancake) . We discussed how to break down words into separate parts.
The HFW covered this week: called, asked, looked
Children have now had their final phonics assessment. This has been stuck into their PO reading diary and we encourage you to practice and consolidate gaps over the summer vacation. Don’t forget to go over the sounds and HFWs which have been ticked off as known - children need lots of practice to embed phonic knowledge securely.
As usual, support material will be available on the Google Classroom.
In Maths we have been playing lots of practical games. Bingo is a firm favourite! We use this game to consolidate number recognition and also to work on numbers that are one less or one more.
Art and craft.
This week, children have been thinking about the forthcoming Eid holiday. We have made lovely star banners to hang in class.
Other information:
Lost Property - we are starting to gather items from our classrooms and corridors. If things are not labelled we will put them in a box outside the EYFS door. Please feel free to come and look through for something that has been lost.
Reading Books - please help us and have a good look at home - return any reading books ASAP. We will give out our last books during the week beginning 2nd June but we would encourage you to do as much reading as possible with your child over the long summer vacation.
Last swim session Sunday 23/6. On this day we will take the children out into the EYFS playground for a bit of fun, wet play! They will have their swim kits and towels anyway but if you would like to provide a tshirt or rash vest for the occasion please pack it that day.
Please do not hesitate to contact the Primary Office if you have any questions or queri

Well done to the FS2 children as the Year 1 team were absolutely delighted with your motivation and superb behaviour during our transition sessions to the Year 1 setting.
FS2 even joined the KS1 assembly on Thursday and were super engaged and responsible. Mrs PW and Mrs OB were very proud of them!
The children have continued reading ‘The Three Little Billy Goats Gruff’’ this week as part of our Monster Phonics activities. They have been introduced to Compound Words and have had fun breaking one whole word into two words. They are compiling class lists of Compound Words as they find them in books or on display.
Our English work is now based around the theme of Super Heroes! We will use the next few weeks to discover what makes a good fictional hero and also more importantly what makes a good real life hero. The children are busy choosing pictures of their fictional heroes and writing a description/story/caption to go with it.
In PSED we are discussing important skills e.g making the right decisions, helping and caring , working hard and being resilient. We will move on to look at SuperHeroes in our community like doctors, nurses, fire fighters etc.
This week the children have been busy practising compound words with known digraphs and trigraphs (e.g bedroom/lipstick/popcorn/pancake) . We discussed how to break down words into separate parts.
The HFW covered this week: I’m, very, old
Children are now using known words by reading the black cat letters and sounding out/blending.
This term we continue to consolidate all the sight words covered and really develop confidence and fluency in reading independently. Our last formal phonics and HFW assessment will be carried out before the Eid break. We will share this with you next week in the children’s POs so that you may continue to consolidate and revise these areas over the summer vacation.
As usual, support material will be available on the Google Classroom.
In Maths children focus on being able to verbalise and describe their own patterns as well as other children’s patterns. They were encouraged to comment on each other’s patterns as a group and to describe how they have used different resources. They were to ask questions about each other’s patterns, such as, “Why did you put that there?” or comment, “I like how your ABBA pattern works!” Tablets were provided for children to take pictures of patterns so they could reference each other’s work and talk about where patterns can be discussed and described. For example, “My pattern is a pattern red, blue, blue, yellow. I know this because I used three different colours and red comes first, then blue, and blue again and the last colour is yellow.” This gives the children a deeper understanding of observational skills on patterns.
Art and craft.

The children have been reading ‘The Three Little Billy Goats Gruff’’ this week as part of our Monster Phonics activities. They have written phrases and looked at the sequence of the story. We have also read different versions of the traditional tale - looking at the similarities and differences in the texts particularly in the beginnings, middles and endings.
Our English work is now based around the theme of Super Heroes! We will use the next few weeks to discover what makes a good fictional hero and also more importantly what makes a good real life hero. The children will discuss important skills e.g making the right decisions, helping and caring , working hard and being resilient. We will move on to look at SuperHeroes in our community like doctors, nurses, fire fighters etc.
This week the children have been busy practising polysyllabic words with known digraphs and trigraphs (e.g helper/shampoo/ melting/sandpit) . We discussed how to break down words into separate parts.
The HFW covered this week: made make came
Children are now using known words by reading the black cat letters and sounding out/blending.
This term we continue to consolidate all the sight words covered and really develop confidence and fluency in reading independently. Our last formal phonics and HFW assessment will be carried out before the Eid break. We will share this with you as normal so that you may continue to consolidate and revise these areas over the summer vacation.
As usual, support material will be available on the Google Classroom.
In previous maths, children explored and experienced fair and unfair sharing by identifying whether objects were left over. This week children used these skills in this small step to identify whether a number is odd or even by sharing into two groups. They were encouraged to use language such as ‘odd’, ‘even’, ‘equal’ and ‘unequal’, which will prompt children to make the links to the number of objects they are sharing. Children were encouraged to talk through the sharing process, explaining what they noticed and how they knew whether an amount was odd or even. They used a range of hands-on activities with various resources and different numbers of objects. We encouraged their thinking skill by asking questions such as, “Can you show me what you did?” and “How do you know?”
Art and craft.

The children have been reading ‘The Little Red Hen’’ this week as part of our Monster Phonics activities. They have written phrases and looked at the sequence of the story.
We also started to read ‘Whatever Next’ by Jill Murphy as part of our English work. This book relates perfectly to our Space theme and the children have been thinking about what they would take with them in their cardboard rocket box if they were to zoom into Space! The individual written lists have been done independently and very creatively!
This week the children have been busy practising CCVCC words with known digraphs and trigraphs (e.g stamp, munch, stomp, sniff)
The HFW covered this week are : time, out, house, about
Children are now using known words by reading the black cat letters and sounding out/blending.

In Maths, we encourage children to actively participate in extending patterns beyond 11 to 20. They have been focusing on observing the pattern of ten and 1 more, ten and 2 more, ten and 2 more, and so on. They have been recreating this pattern in provisions using a variety of resources and contexts, such as arranging a set of towers to 20 using numicons and number cubes. They have been exploring number cards and sorting and recognising numeral patterns. This active engagement has also encouraged children to predict what comes next in a sequence. We have been practising verbal counting beyond 20 and playing games and activities involving numbers beyond 20, which help them to develop counting skills Children have been practising number formation and ensuring numbers are formed correctly.
Art and craft.
This week, children have been making a telescope. They independently selected the resources and decorated the telescope using the resources provided. They were encouraged to think about and discuss how they would make a telescope. From previous learning in 2-D and 3-D shapes, they understood that they start with a 2-shape rectangle and then to make the cylinder, they rolled the rectangle to form a 3-D cylinder.
15.5.24
The children have continued reading ‘The Gingerbread Man’ this week as part of our Monster Phonics activities. They have written phrases and looked at the sequence of the story.
Mrs Dallas, our whole school subject leader for English, popped into our classrooms to see the children’s writing books - she was hugely impressed and ran out of stickers by the end of the visit!!
We also started to read ‘Aliens Love Underpants’ to link to our Space theme! The children are writing their own creative descriptions of their chosen Alien and its chosen underpants!
This week the children have been busy practising CCVC words with known digraphs and trigraphs (e.g green, fresh, spear, smell)
The sight words covered: your, here, saw
They are using these words by reading the black cat letters and sounding out/blending.
This term we will be consolidating all the sight words covered and really developing confidence and fluency in reading independently.
As usual, support material will be available on the Google Classroom.
In Math, children will build upon their knowledge of sharing. They have been sharing practically for a purpose by having several objects to share between various people or groups. They have learned to share equally by taking one object at a time and giving it to one child before taking the next object and giving it to the next child, repeating this process until all the objects are gone or each child has an equal amount.
Children have also addressed what happens if an amount cannot be shared equally by the number of children we have; they will identify that, at times, there will be leftover objects that cannot be shared fairly. Children may have ideas on what should be done with leftover objects. Throughout the activities, they discussed and showed their sharing experience and how they know whether it is fair. They’ve enjoyed sharing equally with the underpants and the aliens.
Art and craft - Create your own Aliens Love Underpants.
Linking to the story Aliens Love Underpants, the children have created their aliens and chosen the underpants. Using their knowledge of 2D and 3D shapes, they cut out a rectangle, rolled it into a cylinder of an alien, and designed it carefully. They enjoyed discussing their chosen underpants and were encouraged to extend their vocabulary to descriptions, such as ‘My underpants are pink with white rabbits.’
Once again, on Thursday we had a day of learning online! Thank you for your understanding and support during this time, as we understand it can be very difficult to support your child with so many other things going on!
The children have been reading ‘The Gingerbread Man’ this week as part of our Monster Phonics activities. They have written the phrase “Run run as fast as you can. You can't catch me. I'm the Gingerbread Man!”
Well done FS2 - you are such wonderful writers!
This week the children have been busy practising CCVC words (e.g spin, drop, drum, trip) and some with known digraphs (e.g thud, bang, woof) Lots of our words were sound words - onomatopoeia! The children loved this new long word!
They are using these words by reading the black cat letters and sounding out/blending.
This term we will be consolidating all the sight words covered and really developing confidence and fluency in reading independently.
As usual, support material will be available on the Google Classroom.
In this week's maths, children have been exploring some of the properties of shapes by sorting objects that are 3-D, looking at 2-D shapes, fitting shapes together, and moving them apart. They explored printing with 3-D shapes and recognising the flat face the shape makes. They recognise that a 2-D shape is completely flat and 3-D shapes are solid objects.
We encourage children to refer to everyday objects in the environment using the names of 3-D shapes, such as a tin of beans being a cylinder. We also discuss with them when shapes in the environment are 3-D shapes and when they are ‘almost’ 3-D shapes. This way, they can recognise that, for example, a tower on a castle is an ‘almost cylinder’; however, the turret stops it from being a perfect cylinder. This practical application of shape recognition helps to make the learning experience more engaging.
The children build on their knowledge of simple repeated patterns. They were introduced to more complex patterns using 2-D and 3-D shapes, such as squares, triangles, and spheres. They were encouraged to listen carefully and identify which structure was being used.
In Art, the children have created their own planets using paper plates and lots of printing paint. They also read a lovely story called Beeju and looked at non fiction books about Space and Space Travel.
Year 2 are having a charity sale, if you wish your child to participate in this, please bring 500bzs on Thursday 9th May for sale (no more money than 500bzs please ) in a labelled envelope as usual please.

This week has been a shorter week but we have enjoyed every moment. The children are looking forward to a well deserved break.
This week the children have been busy practising the High Frequency Words and consolidating known phonic graphemes. They also had time to write their non fiction pages with the class teacher. We allow time for 1:1 support in writing as the teacher can model and support each child where necessary. We love how confident the children are becoming when writing independently.
Our Monster phonics work this week introduces the ‘oi’ digraph and grapheme. We enhanced the learning by using the story of “The Frog and the Coin”. We have focused on developing blending and segmenting skills in all activities.
New sight words covered this week are: day, away, play, children.
As usual, support material will be available on the Google Classroom.
We will be sending home the next phonics/sight word assessment sheet in the POs on Wednesday - please support us by recapping and consolidating some of these sight words and sounds over the two week mid year vacation. A little and often is the key! There are no reading books or library books sent home over the longer vacations but please check on the Google Classroom for support material.
In Maths, children are exploring 2D shapes and folding paper accurately in halves or quarters. We looked at 2D and 3D shapes in our environment especially with Eid celebrations and displays.
We have been making some lovely Eid cards to take home to families and learning how Eid is celebrated in Oman. An early Eid Mubarak to everyone.

In maths, children explored the number 10 and the different ways it can be arranged. They used different arrangements and were encouraged to explain what they noticed. They arranged patterns to make with concrete resources to 10 and familiarised themselves with manipulating numbers. We encouraged children to notice that the overall number is still the same, no matter where they count from or what arrangements they make. This is the ‘order irrelevance counting principle’.
Using objects of interest, encourage children to make pattern-like arrangements and discuss what the pattern might tell us about the number 10. To deepen children’s understanding, prompt them by asking questions such as, “Do 5 and 5 always make 10?”
In Arabic and assembly time this week we have been focusing on Ramadan and we have been doing some Ramadan artwork in class, learning about this special month.
Wednesday 27th March - last day of term and early finish. Please see general weekly notices for collection timings.
30th April and 1st May - FS2 trip to the National Hospitality Institute (NHI). More details to follow next week.
13.03.24
This week has been really exciting and super busy, we have had Book Week, Mothers’ Day and the start of Ramadan plus dressing up at the end of the week to top it all off- phew!
FS2 has seen a change to the normal timetable this week as we have been reading the story of book week- The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds. This author has written a number of different books for children including ‘Be you!’ an inspirational book for all and ‘Our Table’ addressing changes that occur in families, some beautiful stories that are worth reading.
Our book; The Dot, inspired us to produce our own dot artwork and using the same theme, we made some dot pictures. We loved reading with children from higher up the school and with the children from FS1, we loved sharing books with them and our friends.
All in all, we had another action packed week, photos can be found on Google Classroom.
We also loved having Mummies in school for their pamper session.. They read us stories as we had a special treat of juice and biscuits. Then we gave them massages, applied hand creams, and styled their hair. The Mums looked even more delightful and beautiful when they left! It was such a special moment, thank you to all Mums, you truly are amazing.
In Arabic, we have also been learning how to say Mother and have made a card to give to our Mummies.
In the library we had the privilege of listening to an author- Souad Bazzi, who read to us from one of her books.
Photos from this special week can be found on Google Classroom.
Our Monster phonics work this week introduces the ‘igh’ trigraph and grapheme. We enhanced the learning by using the story of Rapunzel. We have focused on developing blending and segmenting skills in all activities.
New sight words covered this week are: like, when, little, what, by
As usual, support material will be available on the Google Classroom.
In Maths, children expand on their first introductions to the concept of even and odd numbers. Children may have recognised the concept of ‘even’ from their explorations of doubling. This allows children to develop this skill by recalling past knowledge as well as recognising new patterns with numbers up to 10 in different contexts. The children were encouraged to solve problems by using mathematical graphics to draw out their thinking. By doing this, it can support children to explain their reasoning of why a number of objects may be odd or even. To prompt children to explain how they know by using key questions and supporting them to use stem sentences, for example, Does the group have two equal/unequal groups? How do you know? By building up this skill over time, children will be more confident in explaining their thinking
Thursday 14th March - Dress up Day for Book Week
All EYFS children are requested to dress up as Black Cats for our Book Week theme!
The Black Cats are the basis of all our phonemes in the Monster Phonics program. The children use Black Cat logos when sounding out their words.
We chose a simple but effective theme for our dress up - so please dress your children in black leggings and black t shirts with possible cat ears or nose/whiskers!
The Monster Phonics program also have Tricky Words which are represented by a witch - so EYFS teachers will be dressing up as the Tricky Witches!!
Please do not hesitate to contact the Primary Office if you have any questions or queries.

It was a spectacular end to last week, with our Cultural Day and the rain! Thank you for making such an effort with participation and for making our Cultural Day such a success. The children really enjoyed seeing each other’s clothes during our FS parade. In class they talked about their clothes and different countries. We cooked some yummy couscous and learned a dance from West Africa. The children visited the cultural fair and loved listening to the musical performance on stage. All in all, we had an action packed day, photos can be found on Google Classroom.
In phonics this week the children have been reading and writing words, they have really been enjoying reading words made up of the sounds they have learned to date. Details of this and support materials can be found on Google Classroom.
In our Maths sessions, we have been learning about 3D shapes. We have played Bingo, we have been on a shape hunt around school and pulled out shapes from a bag, naming them before we could even see them!
In Arabic this week we have been learning the Arabic names for Mummy, Daddy, Brother and Sister.
We have also been learning how to do some relaxing yoga!
Please be informed that students in EYFS have been given their COMO Canteen shop card in their book bags on Sunday or handed to parents. For additional information, please log in to our Notices platform.

Thursday 14th March - Dress up Day for Book Week
28.02.24
Thank you all for the kind wishes for Teachers’ day, we hope everyone enjoyed the long weekend.
This week we have been continuing our work on non fiction books. The children have read a variety of books about transport including some that have a contents and index page. We have reinforced the concept that books can be non fiction/information/facts/real or fiction/story/imaginary.
Our Monster phonics work this week introduces the ‘oa’ grapheme and uses the theme of Cinderella. We have focused on developing blending and segmenting skills in all activities.
The sight words covered this week: come, some, were, one
As usual, support material will be available on the Google Classroom.
In Maths children build on the skills they have developed when exploring and comparing length by now exploring height. Children move on to using the language ‘tallest’, ‘shortest’, ‘taller’ and ‘shorter’ to make comparisons. They used non-standard units like wooden blocks to take learning outside and explore bigger structures. In the provision, they have been comparing heights and discussing length and heights.
Moving on, we also explore time. Children understand simple time differences, such as night and day. We discuss what is happening tomorrow, next week, or at the weekend to support children in discussing the immediate future. To give children a concept of time passing, we made regular references to time in daily routines, sang songs such as Days of the Week, and recalled the days that had passed.
Cultural Fair 29/2
EYFS will be taking part in this celebration of our wonderful community. All students are invited to wear clothes that represent their nationality or culture or the colours of their flag (see weekly notices for more details). There will be swimming as usual for FS2.
EYFS children will be visiting the fair during the course of the day. There will be lots to see!
Your child can bring in 1 OMR in a labelled envelope and we will support them to choose something from the food stalls. We will be limiting their choices to cakes/treats as we will be sending home the purchase in their snack box, as we normally do. As parents you will be able to take the children to the event after school and purchase other goods with them.
Please be aware of allergies. If your child has allergies it would be better to give them an individual treat at home.
Please support us by not giving your child or the class teacher loose money - it needs to be in a labelled envelope.
IMPORTANT NOTE: the fair is open to parents and children from 1.30pm so you may decide to share the experience together and purchase from the variety of stalls. If this is the case, you do not have to send any money with your child.

Welcome back from our half term break. The children have all bounced back in with lots of interesting and entertaining stories from their holidays.
We used this opportunity to observe their confidence when speaking in front of an audience, their use of detailed conversation and ability to answer questions.
We have so many excellent confident presenters in FS2!
This week we introduced the digraph ‘or’ in our phonics sessions. The children have written word lists and sentences using these words.
Our HFWs were: it’s, do, so
We continue to use these known sight words and encourage the use of phonic knowledge when implementing writing activities. Please keep practising these words at home. A little and often is the key.
The children are very proud of their Naughty Bus books and have brought a copy home to share with you.
We have now started our non fiction topic about Transport. The children are sorting books and discussing the criteria - what makes a book fictional and what makes a book non fictional. Please discuss your child’s favourite mode of transport and anything different they have experienced or seen on their travels. We are encouraging independent writing e.g I like the car. I saw a big, red bus. We are on a green ship.
In Maths we have introduced odd and even numbers. In this small step, children build on their earlier work matching numerals to quantities by now finding and making pairs. They begin to understand that a pair is two. Children were given a collection of items in pairs, such as numicon. The children noticed that all the even had a flat edge, and the odds had one sticking out. Children have been encouraged to arrange quantities into pairs and to notice that some quantities will have an odd one left over with no partner. We used our daily routines and practical activities, such as working in pairs in activity and P.E. games, to point out where we have odd or even amounts. Children were encouraged to notice pairs and odd and even numbers through games involving matching pairs, such as snap or memory games. When objects cannot make a pair, there is an odd number.
Focus children weeks are coming to an end. The remaining parents will be sent emails next week. Thank you for all your support with attendance and the questionnaires. The photos and questionnaires add to our EYFS ideal of ‘belonging’. We want all the children to feel a sense of happiness, comfort and acceptance in their daily life at school. Bringing in their photos from home and celebrating their lives with their family and friends is extremely important to us all.
Please be informed that students in EYFS have been given their COMO Canteen shop card on Sunday. For additional information, please log in to our Notices platform.

We are looking forward to our half term at the end of the week, time really is flying by!
FS2 will be saying goodbye to Mrs Sarah Al Lamki this week. Sarah is going to teach in Year 1 from after half term as she has completed her teaching course. We are very sad to see her go but she will not be far away and has promised to pop her head in and see us every day- but we will miss her very much! We wish you every success Sarah.
We have also welcomed another teaching assistant to the EYFS setting - Miss Intisar is now working across FS1 and FS2. She has been enjoying getting to know all the children in the unit.
We have been busy assessing phonic knowledge and sight words this week. The children will have brought home a sheet of updated sight words in their POs - a little practice over half term will support their learning.
The children wrote sentences to create a simple journey for their Naughty Buses - stating where they would like it to go.
We use known sight words and encourage the use of phonic knowledge when implementing writing activities. Please keep practising these words at home with your child especially over the half term vacation.
Our Naughty Bus theme will now move onto a nonfiction topic about transport around the world. Please discuss your child’s favourite mode of transport and anything different they have experienced or seen on their travels.
In phonics, this week we introduced the Monster Angry ‘ai’ and its’ grapheme and used the story Hansel and Gretal as a simple text focus. We continued to develop blending and segmenting skills in all activities.
Our HFWs were: it’s, do, so
In PSED and assembly time we have been looking at the Chinese New Year story of the ‘Great Race’. Through this we have learned some ordinal numbers such as first, second, third and learned information about another culture and celebration.
In Maths we have introduced odd and even numbers. In this small step, children build on their earlier work matching numerals to quantities by now finding and making pairs. A non stop writing week in FS2. The children are now all little authors with published books about their very own Naughty Buses!
We have photocopied the books for display but will be sending copies home after the half term break. Well done FS2 - super job!
Thank you for all your help with cardboard boxes - the Naughty Buses are amazing and again they are on display for the time being. We will send them home with the story books after half term.
We use known sight words and encourage the use of phonic knowledge when implementing writing activities. Please keep practising these words at home with your child especially over the half term vacation.
Next Sunday the children will come home with an individual updated sheet in their PO to show their progression with sight word recognition - please take a little time to consolidate this work at home.
The book and Naughty Bus song have been uploaded onto the Google Classroom for you to enjoy at home. It continues to be our main theme until half term. We will then move onto a nonfiction topic about transport around the world.
In phonics, this week we introduced the ‘ur’ grapheme and continued to use the theme of Sleeping Beauty. We focused on developing blending and segmenting skills in all activities.
Our HFWs were: see, going, just, have
In Maths, the children are practicing number skills - in particular one more and one less, missing numbers from a sequence, subitising and addition facts. The children are growing in confidence and loving chanting numbers to 20/50/100 with fun songs and poems

“Here comes Naughty Naughty Bus!! Watch out here comes Naughty Bus!! “
We hope you're singing this at home too!!
The children have started to create their own Big Red Bus stories this week - they have each imagined a place that the Naughty Bus could be hiding … in the fridge, on the volcano or even with the tortoises in the garden! Then they supported the teachers in taking a photo of the bus in its hide away - these are now ready to be printed and stuck into the children's own books! Each child will be encouraged to write a simple caption to accompany the photographs.
The book and Naughty Bus song have been uploaded onto the Google Classroom for you to enjoy at home. It continues to be our main theme for the next few weeks.
Prêt-a-Portrait arrived to take individual and class group photos of all EYFS students today. The children enjoyed the experience and were superstar models. We look forward to seeing the final takes!
We have started to build some Naughty Buses in our art and DT sessions. Please could you support us by sending in small cardboard boxes which we can use as part of this project.
In phonics, this week we introduced the ‘ee’ grapheme and used the theme of Sleeping Beauty. We focused on developing blending and segmenting skills in all activities.
Our HFWs were: see, going, just, have.
We used the grapheme ‘ee’ to create lists of rhyming words and wrote these into simple sentences.
In Maths, the children are continuing to use a range of resources to play and explore the concept of mass. They are using different types of balance scales and being encouraged to use specific mathematical language.
IThey are encouraged to use the language ‘tall’, ‘thin’, ‘narrow’, ‘wide’ and ‘shallow’ when describing containers and prompted to experiment filling these using other sized containers.

Welcome back and a Happy New Year from FS2.
The children had a few surprises this week!
They walked into school to find two presents in the classroom- we unwrapped them together and found 2 shiny red London Double Decker Buses! There was also a book for each class called “Naughty Bus” by Jan and Jerry Oke. The toy buses are being well used and loved already!
To complete the surprise - there was a mysterious object in our corridor - covered in a big sheet! This in turn had big question marks all over it - what could it be?
All was revealed - a big red London bus for us to use in our role play area!
The children have also got lots of shops to play in - including a garden centre and supermarket. The shops, buses and Naughty Bus book will lead us into our topic about London and all its famous buildings.
The book and Naughty Bus song will be uploaded onto the Google Classroom for you to enjoy at home. It will be our main theme for the next few weeks.
During PSED this week the children were asked to think about the world around them. We considered what could be a wish for the world. The children all came up with brilliant wishes - ‘happiness for everyone’ ‘toys for everyone’ ‘love for everyone’ ‘kisses for everyone’ ‘hugs for everyone’ and ‘cookies for everyone’ were some of the wonderful examples. The wishes were written on green leaves and placed on the Humani Tree outside the Oryx Theatre.
We also had our FS2 Sports Day today. The children were awesome and really showed off their collaborative meerkat, resilient spider and risk taking cat skills! Thank you for all your support and we hope you had as much fun as the children!
In phonics, this week’s theme is Little Red Riding Hood. It teaches the short, tricky oo grapheme. We focused on developing blending and segmenting skills in all activities.
We covered the sight words: : look, now, down.
In maths we introduced the concept of zero. They will already have some practical understanding of ‘nothing there’, ‘none’ or ‘all gone’. They learnt that the number name ‘zero’ and the numeral 0 can be used to represent this idea. Throughout this small step, support children to notice where they see ‘zero’. For example, they may notice zero cookies on a plate or see zero leaves on a tree.
Children continued to develop the skill of perceptual subitising. This form of subitising refers to instantly recognising the number of objects in a group without needing to count them. In this step, the concept of subitising zero objects is introduced, as well as the instant recognition of up to five objects.
Focus children weeks will be starting again for Term 2. We will contact you via email when it is your child’s week - and hand out a new questionnaire for you to fill in at home.

FS2 Sports Day – Wednesday 10th January 2024
Dear Parents,
FS2 will be holding their annual sports day on Wednesday 10 January at British School Muscat. The event will take place on the school all-weather pitch and will be divided into 6 activities. The children will begin their sports activities at 8:00am and will finish at approximately 9:30am.
Throughout this term the pupils have learnt the various activities that they will be performing on sports day. The sports day will be laid out in a circuit form, consisting of 6 activity stations and 2 water stations and every child will participate in each of the stations. All pupils are asked to wear normal PE kit on the day and to bring hats and water bottles, as they would do for their normal P.E. lessons outside. Water will be provided for the children. Please apply sunscreen to your child before arrival at school.
It is hoped that as many parents as possible will be able to attend and support this event. It would be advisable to wear appropriate footwear (trainers) for the all-weather field and bring water if required. The seated area for parents will be shaded to some extent but if you would like to bring extra shading for yourself, please do so. Parents are invited to dress in house colours if they so wish.
Upon entering, please ensure you wear your parents badge at all times. If you do not have a parent badge, or are bringing relatives who do not have a BSM badge, please sign in with the security guards either at the top or bottom car park. They will issue you a badge to wear at all times which then needs to be returned to the security team on departure.
We have limited parking available in the school and we would ask that parents do not park in the top car park.
The bottom car park will be made available for parents to park in the two drop off lanes in the underground carpark between 07:50 am until 10:00 am. It is essential that no-one parks down the middle of these lanes as this will cause an obstruction for anyone trying to leave. We would ask that you do not park any earlier than 07:50 am. Parents must vacate the drop off zones by 10:30 am at the latest. In addition to this, there are 45 spaces outside the bottom car park and more parking outside school premises on Al Nadhayer street, Way 1949 and Way 1947. Where possible, we would ask families to carpool to reduce congestion in the car park
We welcome your support and hope you enjoy the day.
Sincerely,
Ian O’Sullivan
Primary PE Coordinator
