This is the last full week of term! Where did the time go?
We are busy singing and practising poems for our performance on Thursday. We look forward to seeing you there.
This week we have started activities on the book ‘Stickman’. The children have enjoyed this winter tale about an unfortunate Stickman who gets lost and just wants to get home to his family. We have used the book to support individual writing tasks and some lovely art collage work. We will upload a reading of the book onto the Google Classroom.
We have continued our structured Phonics, English and Maths sessions.
Our Monster Phonics scheme introduces the children to groups of letters each week.
We have now completed all the Black Cat letters! This means the children have been through all 26 letters in the alphabet (name and sound). We have also shown the children both upper case (capital) and lowercase letters. We continue to concentrate on the formation of lower case letters when the children are writing.
This week in phonics we recapped and consolidated all the new digraphs and double sounds.
We have carried out the second phonics assessment for the term and have attached your child's individual reference sheet in their PO reading diary. Please support us and spend a little time reinforcing letter sounds and sight words over the upcoming vacation.
The children are encouraged to record and practise letters and sight words - to write simple sentences as a challenge. They are encouraged to write independently talking about weekend news or exciting experiences outside school. We reinforce capital letters and finger spacing when appropriate.
This week in Maths, we have revisited 2-D shapes: squares and rectangles. Prior to learning about the properties of shapes, we explored how shapes can be combined to make shapes. For example, two rectangles can be put together to make a larger rectangle or a square.
They used mathematical language to describe the properties of squares and rectangles, such as ‘ sides’, ‘straight’ and ‘corners’. They also understand that squares have four sides equal in length, and a rectangle has two equal long sides and two equal short sides. For one of the activities, the children got to fold a square paper/ rectangle paper and predict what shapes they would find. We emphasise that these shapes are flat to develop their understanding of 2-D shapes.
Forward Notice:

We have had some wonderful weather and the children have loved being outdoors. We have taken a trip down to the FS museum and had fun learning about dinosaurs. We are also using the garden and water play area every day!
A great week of work on the book ‘Oi Frog’. The children have loved the story line and the rhyming couplets. We have used the book to support individual writing tasks.
We are so impressed at the children’s love of reading and writing!

Dear Parent,
I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to bring to your attention that on Tuesday, December 12th, children in FS2 will be required to bring their hats and water bottles.
Please ensure that your child comes prepared with these items on both dates. Unfortunately, those without hats will not be able to participate in outdoor activities. I appreciate your understanding and cooperation in ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all.
If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to reach out. Thank you for your cooperation.
Best regards,
Mr O'Sullivan

We have had a long and productive week and a half! We hope you enjoyed the long weekend for National Day.
We have continued our structured Phonics, English and Maths sessions. Our Monster Phonics scheme introduces the children to groups of letters each week. We have now completed all the Black Cat letters! This means the children have been through all 26 letters in the alphabet (name and sound).
This week’s theme is Jack and the Beanstalk. These lessons teach the long oo grapheme. We continued to focus on developing blending and segmenting skills in all activities. We will place some simple songs and videos in the Google classroom folders to support extra practice at home with the ‘oo’ grapheme.
We covered the sight words - then, them, this, that, said.
The children are encouraged to record and practise letters and sight words - to write simple sentences as a challenge. They are encouraged to write independently talking about weekend news or exciting experiences outside school.
This week in Maths, children are introduced to concepts of one more and one less than a given digit. They were using a range of resources, such as using a die. They rolled it, counted the spots and showed their fingers to represent the number. They can show whether it is more than or less.
The children begin to understand that as they count forwards, each number they say is one more than the previous number and notice how numbers increase in size when one more is added.
For one less, the children understand that as we count back, each number is one less than the number before. Singing and acting out the rhymes/songs helps them to notice that the number gets small because they are taking one away.

We started the week with Diwali celebrations- we hope you had a special time with family and friends if you were celebrating the Festival of Light. We also observed a period of silence in EYFS on Sunday. We wore odd socks on Monday to celebrate our differences and how it is so wonderful to be unique! Such a busy week!
We are talking about Omani National Day and learning about the colours of the flag and singing some Omani songs!
We are also starting to learn some songs and poems.
We have continued to explore the book ‘Room on the Broom’ this week. The children are making their brooms and adding the characters. They continue to write simple captions, phrases or sentences to accompany the story.
This week's task was to practise rhymes and pay attention to how they sound. For example, broom, broom, cat, hat , spat. Their challenge was to think of another word to rhyme and put the word in the cauldron if it rhymes. They have all been Resilient Spiders and Confident Lions.
We read the story ‘We are going on a bear hunt.’ This story helps the children understand and respond to the use of position and direction. for example, ‘Can you put the teddy under the chair?’ They have learned words like, in, on ,under, beside, between, through.
This week we continued our structured Phonics, English and Maths sessions.
Our Monster Phonics scheme introduces the children to groups of letters each week.
We have now completed all the Black Cat letters! This means the children have been through all 26 letters in the alphabet (name and sound).

We have sent home small check sheets last week for you to practise individual sounds and words at home. They were stuck into PO Reading Diaries. Please note that the sounds not highlighted are the ones for home practice.
This will be a repeated process when we assess the children again at the end of term.
In maths we have returned to our work on shapes by exploring with circles and triangles. comparing the difference between both shapes. In our activities we did a shape hunt in our class and outdoor area and sorted shapes out in groups. The children also compared the difference between a 2D and 3D shape; understanding that 2D is flat and 3D has faces.

The children experienced their first ‘fire drill’ and evacuation practice in FS2 this week.
We practiced what to do in the event of an emergency . We talked about what to do if there was a reason to leave our building and why it would be important to listen to instructions from adults. The children took it all in their stride, well done everyone! Ms PW was very impressed with the whole of EYFS!
We had a wonderful time discussing the Diwali festival which takes place this week. The children made lovely Rangoli patterns on plates and explored shapes on visual displays. They also made some delicious Diwali sweets which we hope you/they enjoyed!

The children are very excited as we opened up the EYFS British Museum last week!
They have all been down once to peep at the dino exhibits - Mr T Rex is loving his new home!
The museum will be a wonderful addition to our EYFS provision - covering so many areas of our curriculum; in particular our history and geography/ Understanding the World objectives and the development of language and communication. The children will be encouraged to ask questions, be curious and share ideas.
A huge thank you to Mrs Al Lamki for all her hard work creating the Museum.
We have enjoyed lots of stories involving kindness this week. We have discussed how we all would like to be treated and how to treat others the same way. We have celebrated how we are all different and how wonderful this makes the world. This will lead us into our Red day on Thursday where we join the rest of the school in Showing Racism the Red Card.

We continued to carry out activities on our book The Gingerbread Man. We have taken it in turns to speak in different voices this week. We talked about characters and used varying tones, volume and expression when pretending to act. Super acting skills FS2! The children are making lolly pop stick puppets to aid with this story telling.
We also linked the book to PSED matters, discussing the moral of the story. We discussed the theme of ‘trust’ and who to trust in our lives.

You will have x2 books a week. Please return them the following Sunday. If they are not returned then new books cannot be sent home.
Please record any comments in the Reading Log - we welcome any observations about your child's reading and sight word recognition. We will also keep you updated with comments and share support techniques each Sunday.
Again - last time reminder….
First and most importantly, let your child relax and ENJOY the books - make up the story through pictures and retell the sequence of events. Can they recognise any of the letters covered in our phonics sessions? Can they spot any of the Sight Words we have done so far?
Making a quiet time each day to reflect, share and ‘read’ a book together is the most important thing.

Our FS2 children are doing so well with their structured lessons! Wow - super sitting, super listening and super motivation! All mixed in with lots of great indoor and outdoor play!
Our book this week was The Gingerbread Man. The story is told through a series of repetitious scenes, as the gingerbread runs away from more and more characters until eventually there's quite a crowd in pursuit. We looked at varying stories - some which showed very different endings for the Gingerbread Man! The children have been acting out the story - taking it in turns to be the ‘characters’ and even the ‘narrator’.

A lovely, busy week in FS2.
The children have enjoyed the story “Carla’s Sandwich’ by Alison Janney.
There were super links to our PSED curriculum as the main character Carla uses her spirited nature to teach her classmates that "unusual" can actually be good. Lively illustrations help showcase the book's messages of acceptance, tolerance, individuality, and creativity, and the funny plot and authentic dialogue made it a great first book for FS2. We retold the storyline and discussed its content during our English sessions.
We will place links to the book on the Google Classroom.
This week we started our structured Phonics, English and Maths sessions.
Our Monster Phonics scheme introduces the children to groups of letters each week.
We start with the Black Cat letters!
The children were introduced to the sounds ‘s’ a’ ‘t’ ‘p’ and the sight words ‘as’ ‘at’.
The children were encouraged to record and practice these letters and write simple sentences as a challenge.
We will place some simple songs and videos in the Google classroom folders to support extra practice at home.
In maths the children worked with numbers 1-5. They were encouraged to match numicon shapes and numerals from 5-10 and then 10 - 20 if appropriate.
They identified correct number bonds to 5 - how many ways are there to make number 5?
The children also practiced the formation of these numbers independently.
Again, please check the Google Classroom for support material to use at home.
Please note:
Library books are chosen each week in the Wednesday library session. Please return the book in the blue BSM library bag every Wednesday.
We will start sending individual reading books/reading diaries home soon - more details to follow after the Meet and Greet information session.
Later on this half term, new children will be receiving an individual login to our Learning Ladders assessment program which will enable you to look at all the weekly observations on your child. Children from FS1 will have their log in from last year.
We are starting to refer to our class Family Tree Displays. Please could each child bring in a photograph of themselves with their family members to support our activities in class.

An amazing week in FS2! What a super group of children and parents!
The children are really responding well to all our routines and expectations. They have all settled extremely well and we are all so happy together.
We have enjoyed some lovely stories this week including one called ‘The Colour Monster Goes to School’. This wonderful book supports children's understanding about feelings, associating them with colours they might know. It supports emotional development through expressing emotions and feelings and helps children understand what it is they feel, and possibly why.
The children are also working together as a team to achieve a class reward at the end of the week. We are developing their understanding of the school Learning Ethos by using a Collaborative Meerkat to demonstrate this valuable attribute.
In class we have continued some simple baseline assessments which involve observing children within the indoor and outdoor provision. Well being is paramount in EYFS and we are continuing to observe children’s engagement in structured sessions and Discovery Learning opportunities.
We will be ready to introduce more formal Phonics, Literacy and Maths sessions from next week.
Later on this half term, you will be receiving an individual login to our Learning Ladders assessment program which will enable you to look at all the weekly observations on your child. We will also be inviting you to Focus Child Parent meetings once the children are completely settled within the FS2 provision.

Dear Parents
What a fab week!
We have loved meeting you all over the staggered start sessions and our two full days!
Our teachers, Ms Price Williams and Mrs O’Brien are so impressed with how the children have started their FS2 journey.
They are settling well into their new classroom environments and loving the indoor and outdoor provision.
We look forward to seeing you all again for our first full week on Sunday 3rd September. Please remember, from this point, FS2 children will come straight into the setting each morning without parents. The FS2 team will be there at the gate to welcome and greet each child.
Please be aware that the Blue EYFS Gate opens at 7.10am and will close at 7.30am.
Being punctual is essential each day as the FS2 children do structured phonics and maths sessions at this time.
We are available on the Gate to answer any quick questions or listen to any information regarding your child. Focus Parent Meetings will begin in a few weeks after the children are settled and the structured curriculum has started.
We look forward to meeting parents at our Meet and Greet event which will be on Monday 17th September at 4pm. Please park at the top car park and make your way down to the Oryx theatre. After a presentation in the Oryx there will be time to see your child’s classroom and meet their teachers.
Please accept the Google Classroom invitation, which will be sent out on Thursday.
The FS2 timetables will be uploaded into a folder on each Google Classroom.
We will use this for weekly stream messages from class teachers and upload photographs of special occasions for you to enjoy.
During the course of the year, we will also upload optional activity packs and resources to use at home.
Please note that we promote healthy eating, it is important that snack boxes contain healthy food and perhaps a small ‘treat.’
Please remember to send your child to school with a spare set of labeled clothes in a labeled bag, a water bottle, and a snack box containing a selection of healthy food.
Correct uniform is to be worn by the children, please check the school website if you are unsure. PE house colours are on your Parent Portal but in the meantime, if there is any problem wear a white T shirt.
