Chocolate Sale
Dear parents,
Year 6 will be holding their charity chocolate sale on Thursday 13th June in the Main Hall. Children have made the chocolates at home and will be bringing them in to raise money for our school supported charities.
Each child will display all ingredients used within their product and will display any allergen warnings as per the manufacturer's packaging.
If a child has money in school on Thursday, we will assume that parents have consented to them buying and consuming chocolate at the sale.
We are trying to be sustainable and reduce the amount of packaging used. Please can you help with this by bringing a reusable container to the sale to store your purchases.
Year 2 will also have a stall at the sale, where they will be selling the remaining items from their charity bring and buy sale.
Many thanks for your support with this event.
The Year6 Team.

Thank you for your support with our school trip. The children had a great time and learnt a lot. Thank you to the parents who were able to accompany us; we appreciate it very much!
This week in English, we have started writing our own version of the story of ‘We’re Sailing to Galapagos’. We’re writing about the Daymaniyat Islands instead and incorporating all of the animals that you can find in Oman.
In maths, we have continued our unit on time. This is a tricky topic for students to grasp. The objectives that we will cover include: understanding half past, quarter to and quarter past. We will also cover 5 minute intervals. It is helpful if you provide your child with access to an analogue clock and review the times with them. Our homework this week will support this unit.
In humanities this week, linked to our trip to the fire station, we will look at how fire brigades have changed over time.
In science this week we have been looking at using a simple classification grid to identify animals that can be found in the Daymaniyat Islands.
In phonics this week, we have recapped the w-a sound, where the ti is making an ‘sh’
sound:
In addition to the w-a sound, we recapped on some previous high frequency words: gone, horse, which, pulled, fly, why, cried, find, giant, narrator
In science and PSHE we will look at exercise and food, learning about how we can exercise and how it helps to stay healthy.
In art, we made some clay tiles of the animals that the children might see at the Daymaniyates. This week we will paint the animals thinking carefully about how the animals have adapted to their environment
Homework: - Please see the google classroom for homework this week.
Reading: Please continue to read with your child and use your child's Personal Organiser to record daily reading and communicate any messages to their teacher. You will also find a copy of the class timetable in the front and also in the Google Classroom.

This week in English, we have started learning about the Galapagos Islands through the rhyming book: We’re Sailing to the Galapagos. This links to our science topic of animals and is a great addition to the range of books that we have studied in Year 2. We will plan and write our own version of this linking to animals in other habitats and describing them using wonderful adjectives and similes.
In maths, we have started a new unit on time. This is usually quite a tricky topic for students to grasp. The objectives that we will cover include: understanding half past, quarter to and quarter past. We will also cover 5 minute intervals. It is helpful if you provide your child with access to an analogue clock and review the times with them. Our homework this week will support this unit.
In Humanities this week, we are looking at the Galapagos Islands. This links our earlier topics of continents. We use Google Earth to support this learning and atlases to find the counties located near. We will discuss the climate and the island’s proximity to the equator.
In Humanities this week, we are looking at the Galapagos Islands. This links our earlier topics of continents. We use Google Earth to support this learning and atlases to find the counties located near. We will discuss the climate and the island’s proximity to the equator.
PSHE this week has been focusing on sun care. We have learnt that the sun is helpful for our bones and wellbeing but too much and not enough protection can be dangerous. The children made wonderful posters to highlight how to stay safe in the sun. We watched this video to help with our learning.
In phonics this week, we have recapped the w-a sound, where the s is making an ‘zsh’ sound
In addition to the w-a sound, we recapped on some previous high frequency words: because, we’re, everyone, town, how, through, eyes, boy, again

This week in English, we have finished our creative stories about the Great Fire of London. The children planned and then wrote paragraphs for each part of their plan. They focused on using adjectives, time conjunctions - what fantastic stories! We are looking forward to sharing these with you in our open day later this term.
In maths, the children have continued to learn about fractions. They have used manipulatives and strategies such as a bar model to demonstrate their understanding of equal parts, unit fractions (½, ¼,) where there is only one part and non unit fraction (2/4, ¾) where there are more than one part. They have also related this to finding fractions of amounts; which is fantastic.
In phonics this week, we have recapped the w-a sound, where the a is making an ‘o’
sound
In addition to the w-a sound, we recapped on some previous high frequency words: any, many, these, small, bear, boat, home, clothes

A huge thank you for your donations for Year 2’s Bring and Buy Sale. The children did a great job throughout the day and raised a whopping 350 rials! This money will be donated to one of BSM’s chosen charities.
This week in English, we have started writing for entertainment. We are still linking our work to The Great Fire of London but with this work, we are thinking about how we are writing for a different purpose. The children will consider using more descriptions and adding characters to their stories about London in 1666.
In maths, the children have been fantastic when learning about fractions.
In phonics this week, we have recapped the w-a sound, where the a is making an ‘o’ sound:
In addition to the w-a sound, we recapped on some previous spelling patterns: find fudge change race quiet edge giant dance
In humanities this week, we have continued to look at historical sources and what they tell us about the past and how reliable they are.
In science, we have introduced our new unit of animals. We will learn about how to classify animals depending on their characteristics and think about what animals need in order to survive. So far we have looked at mammals, fish and birds.
DT this week has been a lot of fun! We made our brilliant houses based on homes from 1666. Last week the children made a prototype from straws and this week, the children measured, cut and joined their pieces of wood. They worked really hard and have some very impressive results.
Homework: - For this week, we have decided to not add homework. The children have been working very hard online and deserve a break. If you would like some activities to complete, please refer to some of the games that have been shared while working online.

Thank you to all parents and students for adapting so brilliantly with our online working. Everytime we are online, I am so impressed with how amazing and engaged the children are; they really are a credit to you.
This week in English, we finally shared our work with Y3. The children visited the year 3 classrooms and spoke with the children about their learning and their posters. They were great at explaining their process and very confident when speaking with the older children. In our lessons this week, we have focused on writing sentences with question marks and exclamation marks. We have also started looking at fiction and nonfiction texts in preparation for the children writing a narrative piece linked to The Great Fire of London.
In maths, the children have continued their learning on fractions and identifying that a fraction is equal parts of a whole. This week we have focused on quarters and thirds; what this looks like, how to identify a quarter and third and what different quarters and thirds look like.

What a fantastic Book week at BSM!
The children all looked fantastic! Here are some photos from Year 2’s Monster Day!
Year 2 Open Afternoon! Year 2 would like to invite all parents to visit us on Monday 25th from 1:00pm onwards. We look forward to seeing you!
Please note that on the Monday 25th of March we will be having our Significant People Day in Year 2. Please can you complete this form to let us know who your child plans on dressing up as - this would be a huge help for our organisation of the day. If you have not decided yet, please do not worry.
In English this week, we have continued our work learning about significant people. We are focussing on fact files about the different people; writing clear sentences, checking our sentences and making sure that we are using the correct punctuation.
We are looking forward to sharing these with you when we have our open afternoon next week.
In phonics this week, we have focused on the sound - le - in words such as table, able, middle, giggle. The children have practised their context and also how to add suffixes to change the words to past tense.
In maths, we have been consolidating our knowledge of length and measuring using a ruler accurately. We have thought about when to use a ruler and when to use a metre stick. And the last few days we have used measure in word problems.
For example, The house is 10m tall. The tree is 4m shorter. How tall is the tree?
Homework: - you will find this on the google classroom Please submit the work, take a picture or leave a comment saying that it has been completed. The homework consolidates the learning from class and will help your child access future learning. If you are having any trouble, please let us know.
Reading: Please use your child's Personal Organiser to record daily reading and communicate any messages to their teacher. You will also find a copy of the class timetable in the front and also in the Google Classroom.
Dress up Day: Significant People Day will take place on Monday 25th of March. Your child will be asked to dress up as a significant person of their choice. Please complete this form to let us know who your child plans to dress up as.
Chocolate for snacks: We have noticed that some children are bringing in chocolate as snacks and we are struggling to encourage them to eat fruit first. Please provide a healthy and sustainable lunch so that your child is full and is able to concentrate. Chocolate and sugary snacks give a spike and then a dip which impacts a child’s focus and ability to pay attention in their lessons. Thank you for your support.
Concerns around Huggy Wuggy: We would like to address a concern that has arisen regarding the popular character "Huggy Wuggy". The "Huggy Wuggy" character is associated with a horror game that contains intense and frightening imagery, which is not suitable for the emotional and psychological development of young children.
As parents, your guidance and involvement in monitoring the media content that your children consume are crucial. It is recommended to ensure that the games, videos, and other media they engage with are age-appropriate and align with their developmental stage.
By being mindful of the content that children are exposed to, we can support their healthy growth and well-being. We encourage open communication with your children about the media they encounter and the importance of making informed choices.
Thank you for your attention to this matter. If you have any concerns or questions, please feel free to reach out to us.

World Book Day: Thursday 14th March - In KS1 the children will be dressing up as their favourite monster phonics character or in the colour of their favourite monster phonics character. We will share some resources and ideas on the google classroom.

In English this week we started our new book ‘Island Born,’ about Lola who is learning about her home island, The Dominican Republic through asking people in her neighbourhood about their memories. We have been exploring the different similes in the book and how to start our sentences differently using examples from the book.
Phonics: This week in phonics we have been looking at the c making the s sound in words such as ice, nice, decide, prince, city. Please ask your child about the words that they have learnt and ask them to write some of the words that we practised. Here are this week’s common exception words and high frequency words:
Year 2 CEWs
would, door, floor, could, poor, should
HFWs
our, found, round, around, mouse, shouted good, took, book, looks, looking
Unequal groups Equal groups Repeated addition
In maths we have continued working on grouping and practising repeated addition to secure our understanding of different ways to multiply. The children have responded well to the learning and are being challenged with larger numbers.
In art this week, we have sketched some more as we are really allowing children to practise their skill. They will self assess their work through self evaluation and peer evaluation as we have discussed giving constructive and supportive feedback.
In humanities, to reinforce our work linked to timelines, we are learning about how music technology has changed over the years.
For PSHE we are looking at our theme of bullying; what is the definition of bullying and how we can make sure it does not happen at BSM - please talk to your child about some of the strategies discussed in class..
In science, we conducted an investigation linked to what are the best conditions for a plant to grow. The children planted their own seeds and changed the conditions thinking carefully about how they can make it a fair test.
Thank you for your support
Dress up Day: Later in the term we will have our Significant People Day where children will be asked to dress as their chosen significant person.

We had our ‘Day The Crayons Quit’ day this week and it was great. All of the children enjoyed a day of dress up and activities linked to our book. Here are some pictures from the day:
In maths we have started learning about multiplication. We will start by making equal groups and ensuring that we know that multiplication is repeated addition through visual representations with counters and arrays.
In art this week, we practised using crayons and, inspired by our story, created our own masterpieces linked to a crayon world.
In humanities, we are learning about how homes and houses have changed over the years. What do we have now that we didn’t have before? How has this impacted our everyday lives?
For PSHE we are looking at our theme of bullying; what is the definition of bullying and how we can make sure it does not happen at BSM.
In science, we have looked at the parts of a plant and will consider what the different functions of a plant do. We will develop our understanding through conducting an investigation later in the term.
Discovery Learning has also started this week. It is an opportunity for the children to lead their learning and choose areas of interest. They all have an opportunity to join different rooms throughout the year group. Each room covers a learning objective and is led by an adult. It is a favourite among our little learners!

In our English lessons this week we have continued our work linked to The Day the Crayons Quit. We have planned a letter back to the Crayons from Duncan. As we write the letter, we will use and develop the skills that we have been learning. These include using the features of a letter, using capital letters and varied punctuation such as a full stop, question mark and an exclamation mark.
Monday 29th January:
Please note that we will have a dress up day to celebrate our work. Your child can dress in the colours of their favourite crayon. Here are some pictures from last year’s dress up day
In maths we have continued to learn about money from the UK. We have been finding the total of two amounts and have started to calculate the change that you would get. This is a little tricky for some children as it can be quite an abstract concept. It is a good discussion to have when you go shopping.
In art this week, we have been developing our sketching techniques. We are learning to provide constructive feedback to each other in order to support another person’s improvements. It also helps us to receive feedback and know that this helps us to get better. We used a well known video called Austin’s Butterfly to help us understand this. This lesson followed on from last week.
In humanities, we reflected on our trip from last week. We thought about what we learnt and how it linked to our learning in class. We also made bar graphs from the data we gathered with our tally charts.
For PSHE we are looking at our theme of bullying; what is the definition of bullying and how we can make sure it does not happen at BSM.

Dress up Day: Following on from our recent learning about the Day the Crayons Quit, we will ask our classes to dress up as their favourite crayon or in the colour of their favourite crayon. Some pictures for inspiration can be found here.

The highlight of this week was our trip to the park. A huge thank you to all of the parents who were able to help. The children were great and the trip helped us with our learning:
We were able to use our art skills to sketch some of the plants and houses.
We created a tally chart which we used to collect and analyse the data.
We also looked at microhabitats and different plants.
We used our map knowledge to draw a bird’s eye view of the park.
In English this week we have continued our work linked to The Day the Crayons Quit. We have drafted a letter to the character in the book and used conjunctions to explain why the crayons might be feeling that way.
If you have not read the book yet, you can find a recording of it here.
In maths we have continued to learn about money from the UK. Children have been identifying and adding different amounts.
The children have also been finding the same amounts in different nominations and are starting to add amounts together. Next week, they will start to look at worded problems involving money.
In art this week, we have been developing our sketching techniques. We are learning to provide constructive feedback to each other in order to support another person’s improvements. It also helps us to receive feedback and know that this helps us to get better. We used a well known video called Austin’s Butterfly to help us understand this.
In humanities, we are looking at how houses in Oman have changed over the years. We have used a timeline to help us and have learnt about chronological order. This will be further explored in humanities over the term.
For PSHE we are looking at our theme of bullying; what is the definition of bullying and how we can make sure it does not happen at BSM.
In science, we have looked at the parts of a plant and will consider what the different functions of a plant do. We will develop our understanding through conducting an investigation later in the term.

Welcome back and Happy New Year to all our families in Year 2; we hope that you had a restful break.
We have had a great start to the year and the children have all been absolutely amazing. They have been engaged and hardworking in all of their subjects and their behavior has been outstanding. Thank you.
In English this week we have started our new book The Day the Crayons Quit. We started off by removing all the crayons and colouring pencils from our classrooms and the children were very excited to find out why.
If you have not read the book yet, you can find a recording of it here. We have been thinking about how the crayons are feeling and have written sentences inspired by the story. We will, in the coming weeks, write our own letter back to the crayons.
In maths we have been learning about money from the UK. Children have been identifying and adding different amounts.
In art this week, we have been learning about sketching and using different techniques to sketch. We have also been learning about different styles. We will use these skills when we go on our trip next week.
In humanities, we have assessed our learning from last term and also introduced our new topic of timelines and comparing houses and homes over the years. We will look at how houses in Oman have changed over the years. This is another area that we will look at on our trip.
For PSHE this term we have started with some resolutions linked to our behaviours and what we will try to do to make the world a better place. We will then look at bullying; what it is and how we can make sure it does not happen at BSM.
Homework: - you will find this on the google classroom Please submit the work, take a picture or leave a comment saying that it has been completed. The homework consolidates the learning from class and will help your child access future learning. If you are having any trouble, please let us know.

Year Two Trip to MQ: We have a school trip scheduled for Tuesday 16th January. It is a short trip where we will walk to our local park. We will link this to our current learning about homes in MQ, art and sketching and also animals and micro habitats. We have sent an email regarding information about this trip. Please contact your child’s teacher should you have any questions or concerns.
Advance Notice Dress up Day: Following on from our recent learning about the Day the Crayons Quit, we will ask our classes to dress up as their favourite crayon or in the colour of their favourite crayon. Some pictures for inspiration can be found here
Later in the term we will have our Significant People Day where children will be asked to dress as their chosen significant person.
Writer’s Workshops:
We are excited to inform you that your child might be invited to attend Writer's Workshops this term. These sessions are designed to target the key features of sentence writing and will provide valuable opportunities for your child to develop targeted aspects of their writing skills. Sessions will include using punctuation, sentence structure, and basic grammar in sentences. Children will learn strategies to help them with their writing across the curriculum. These sessions will be run by Mrs Robins. Comment end
