Another busy week!
A huge thank you to the parents who were able to support our sports day. The children were absolutely amazing! Here is a link to some of the pictures that were taken. Please do not reproduce or share images that include other children without their parent’s consent.
In English this week, we have been publishing our leaflets taking great care with our presentation. This is a great way for the children to take pride in their work; and we are very proud of their efforts.
The leaflets contain paragraphs all about the Amazon rainforest; including information about food chains, habitats and the different plants and animals.
In maths this week, we have been continuing to look at the properties of 3D shapes and counting their edges, faces and vertices. We have sorted and classified them.
In humanities, as part of our continued work on the continents, we have been learning about the main features of each one. This week has been focused on Africa and Oceania
Our art this week and next will link to mechanisms. The children will make cards that will have a lever or a side and learn how these work.
Homework: - you will find this on the google classroom Please submit the work, take a picture or leave a comment saying that it has been completed. The homework consolidates the learning from class and will help your child access future learning. If you are having any trouble, please let us know.
Reading: Please use your child's Personal Organiser to record daily reading and communicate any messages to their teacher. You will also find a copy of the class timetable in the front and also in the Google Classroom.
Lunches: Thank you to all of the parents who provide a healthy and balanced lunch for their child. We see some amazing fruit and vegetable combinations. Sadly, some children are still coming in with very sugary and non nutritious food. Fueling your child well will support their emotional and mental well being as well as their ability to successfully attain high standards of learning as food plays a huge part in their concentration and energy levels. If you need any help with suggestions or advice, please see our school nurse for further information.
Year 2 Sports Day: A huge thank you to all who were able to support!
Advance notice: Please see the parent notices for information about BSM’s world book day. Ms Dallas has shared the theme for Year 1 and Year 2
Thank you for all of your support over this first term. Please have a restful break - we look forward to seeing you all in the new academic year.

Dear Parents,
Year 2 will have their sports day on Sunday 10 December at British School Muscat. The event will take place on the all-weather pitch. The children will begin their sports activities at 11:00 am and will finish at approximately 1:30 pm.
Throughout this term the students have learnt and practiced the various activities that they will be performing on sports day. The sports day will be laid out in a circuit form, consisting of 8 activity stations and 2 water stations and every child will participate in each of the stations. All students are asked to wear normal PE kit to school on the day and to bring hats and water bottles, as they would do for their normal PE lessons outside. Water and glucose biscuits will be provided for the children. Please apply sunscreen to your child before arrival at school.
Upon entering, please ensure you wear your parents badge at all times. If you do not have a parent badge, or are bringing relatives who do not have a BSM badge, please sign in with the security guards either at the top or bottom car park. They will issue you a badge to wear at all times which then needs to be returned to the security team on departure.
It is hoped that as many parents as possible will be able to attend and support this event. It would be advisable to wear appropriate footwear (trainers) for the artificial field and bring water if required. The seated area for parents will be shaded to some extent but if you would like to bring extra shading for yourself, please do so. Parents are invited to dress in house colours if they so wish.
We have limited parking available in the school and we would ask that parents do not park in the top car park. The bottom car park will be made available for parents to park in the two drop off lanes in the underground carpark between 10:45 am until 1:30 pm. It is essential that no-one parks down the middle of these lanes as this will cause an obstruction for anyone trying to leave. We would ask that you do not park any earlier than 10:45 am. Parents must vacate the drop off zones by 1:40 pm at the latest as the security team will need to prepare for the KS2 end of day. In addition to this, there are 45 spaces outside the bottom car park and more parking outside school premises on Al Nadhayer street, Way 1949 and Way 1947. Where possible, we would ask families to carpool to reduce congestion in the car park.
We welcome your support and hope you enjoy the day.
Sincerely,
Ian O’Sullivan
Primary PE Coordinator

In science this week, we have learnt all about different food chains within the rainforest. We have learnt that all food chains start with a producer and include consumers, predators and prey.
Our art and DT links closely with our English, science and geography units and we have added to our animal masks using modroc. We have also added features and we are carefully painting our designs.
In maths, we have been practising our knowledge of addition and subtraction and focusing on our accuracy to answer questions. We have been referring to our part whole models and bar models to help us understand the relationship between addition and subtraction.
In science this week, we have learnt all about different food chains. We have learnt that all food chains start with a producer and include consumers, predators and prey.
Our art and DT links closely with our English, science and geography units and we have begun to build rainforest animal masks using modroc. We have started to think about the materials we might use to create the facial features next week.
In Humanities we continue to focus on continents and oceans and locating them on globes, atlases and maps. This week we have focussed on North America and its unique geographical features.
In PSHE we have continued to think about what makes a good friend and used kind words to give our friends compliments. We discussed the importance of being a good friend and what impact this has on those around us.

In English this week the children have been writing their own poems inspired by the book: The Kindest Red. The children imagined what they want their ideal world to look like. They used repetition in their poetry to emphasise their point.
In Maths, we will be using base 10 to learn how to subtract. We will practise this and challenge the children with larger numbers which will require them to cross the ten boundary. Once confident, the children will begin to solve worded problems to consolidate.
In maths, we will be using base 10 to learn how to add two 2-digit numbers together. We always start by adding the ones digit first in case it goes over 10 in which case we will ‘exchange’ 10 ones for a stick of 10.
Science this week will start looking at animals and their habitats as our new topic. The children will learn about different environments that different animals live in and why.
Humanities links with our science as the children have learnt about the different continents and oceans. We learnt about why Australasia is now called Oceania.
In art we have completed our model of the Isle of Struay and made features out of clay.
In PSHE we have been learning about what makes a good friend and how we can help each other.

In English this week the children have been planning to write a leaflet all about Katie Morag’s island and describing some of the key aspects of the island. This links their geography learning with their English writing.
They will use their recent practising of expanded noun phrases to support their sentences. We have been impressed with the children’s hard working attitude and their ability to apply the skills that they have learnt
In humanities, we have linked our work closely with our English text, Katie Morag. We have been learning about the key features of maps and have started to make our own map of the fictional island, The Isle of Struay. This week we focussed on cardinal points and added a compass rose to our maps.
In maths, we have been linking our knowledge of number bonds to help when adding numbers together by making the next 10.
In science, we have continued to look at the properties of materials and investigated various objects to test how the shapes of solid objects can be changed by squashing, bending, twisting and stretching.
In art, we have been working collaboratively to make a model of the Isle of Struay using paper mache. We started by scrunching scrap paper, dipping it in glue and water and gradually building up the layers to create the landscape of the island.
Our second round of Discovery Learning lessons has continued this week. The new activities in each area have kept the children engaged and given them excellent opportunities to develop the learning from each lesson objective and consolidate existing skills. Teachers will target specific children who need support and those who need to be stretched through tailored questioning and tasks.
In PSHE we are learning about different feelings and how to identify them; this will carry over for a few more lessons.

In maths, we have continued our unit of work linked to addition and subtraction. The children have been learning about related facts and how they can use their existing knowledge and apply this to new learning (linking).
In PSHE we are learning about different feelings and how to identify them; this will carry over for a few more lessons
In humanities, linked to our English, we are learning about the Scottish Island of Coll which is similar to Katie Morag’s island. The focus of learning will be map symbols; why they are useful and what they tell us.
In science we are learning about different materials and which are suitable for specific tasks or activities. The focus is on making predictions and observations.
In art we have applied our blending and watercolour skills to create our own silhouette self portraits. We used torches and drew around our shadows, the children loved seeing their silhouettes and filled them with things that are special to them.
Our second round of Discovery Learning lessons have begun this week. There are new activities in each area except for cooking where those children who have not already, will have the opportunity to make fruit skewers as they learn about healthy eating and where different fruit comes from in the world.
Homework: - you will find this on the google classroom Please submit the work, take a picture or leave a comment saying that it has been completed.

In English this week the children have worked very hard at learning and associating sounds to their correct grapheme. We have been using ‘hold a sentence’ to encourage children to write their own sentences. They need to say the sentence, sound out any unfamiliar words and practise their spelling patterns. The children have really enjoyed writing some great sentences and have been very resilient when they make mistakes. .
In maths, we have started our new unit of work which is linked to addition and subtraction. The children focused on their number fact families such as number bonds to 10 and extending this by linking it to number bonds to 20 and 100.
We have noticed that some children are not forming their numbers correctly, we have added an optional number formation resource in the materials section of the Google Classroom.
In humanities, we have been learning about the four countries of the UK; with our final country being Scotland. As with the other countries, the children learnt about a physical and a human feature of Scotland and also what the flag looks like and what the national flower or plant is. Ask your child to see if they remember!
In art we have applied our blending skills by using watercolours to develop our own artwork. The children were amazed at how the colours blended together to make a whole new colour!
Our first round of Discovery Learning lessons have concluded this week so the children will have an opportunity to reflect on their learning, their choices and also areas that they would like to work on moving forward. We encourage children to take more autonomy in their learning and to start self regulating. This cycle will be repeated throughout the year.
In PSHE we are learning about different feelings and how to identify them; this will carry over for a few more lessons.

In English this week we are learning about the different parts of phonics that focus on the different sounds and addressing some of the gaps that the children have; this includes looking at the graphemes an
d handwriting formation linked to some of the sounds.
In maths, we have completed our work on place value and have worked on some of the misconceptions that some of the children have. We have challenged some of the children with extension work and riddle questions linked to place value. We have also been counting in 2s, 5s and 10s. The children have been great at this and enjoy some of the songs that we use. We have added them to the materials on the google classroom so that you can practise more at home if you want to.
In humanities, we have been learning about the four countries of the UK; with this week focusing on Northern Ireland. As with all of the other countries, the children learnt about a physical and a human feature of the country and also what the flag looks like and what their national flower or plant is. Ask your child to see if they remember.
In art we have used our skills of blending colours to develop our own artwork; this week the children will be using their skills and apply them to their own piece.
Our Discovery Learning lessons have continued. Each block of focused activities will rotate over three weeks so that all children have the opportunity to experience each teacher-led area.
In PSHE we are learning about different feelings and how to identify them; this will carry over for a few more lessons.

Another great week in Year 2! Thank you to all the parents who were able to attend our Meet and Greet on Sunday. For those who were unable to attend, if you require any information you can check our slides below.
In English this week we are, after assessing the children’s writing, focusing on sentence structure. This includes learning about the different word groups and how to use them. We have been reviewing what a noun is, what an adjective is and what a verb is. Please ask your children and encourage them to explain these to you.
In maths, following our work on place value, we are focusing on number lines and understanding where numbers are placed in the number line. This supports the children’s understanding of value and will help them when they use a number line to add and subtract later in the year.
In humanities, we have been learning about the four countries of the UK; with this week focusing on Wales. We were very lucky to have Mr Clifford come and speak to us all about his home country. The children completed an information sheet identifying physical and human features in Wales.
In art we have used our skills of blending colours to develop our own artwork.
Our Discovery Learning lessons have continued. Each block of focused activities will rotate over three weeks so that all children have the opportunity to experience each teacher-led area.

We have had a fantastic week of learning this week! The children have settled in brilliantly and have started all of their curriculum and specialist lessons.
In English we have been planning our own version linked to The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs! The link to a reading of it can be found here.
The children have chosen their own animals to use in the story and have been thinking about using time conjunctions.
In maths we have been learning about place value. We have been partitioning numbers into tens and ones and have begun to look at different ways we can partition the same number.
In humanities, we have been learning about the four countries of the UK; with this week focusing on England. We have looked at some of the physical and human features in England and also found out what the national flower is.
In art we have been looking at blending colours and creating rubbings using crayons.
Our Discovery Learning lesson also started this week. The children really enjoyed choosing an activity that linked to their learning. Have a look at instagram for some pictures. A highlight of Discovery Learning was making fruit skewers; everyone in the year group will have an opportunity to make a fruit skewer to take home; we hope you also get to enjoy it.
In PSHE we are learning about different feeling and how to identify them; this will carry over for a few more lessons.

Google Classroom: Your child has received an invite to join their Google Classroom via their school email. This will be used for homework and to share various things throughout the year. Please make sure you have joined and you check this on a Wednesday for future homework.
What to wear:
Please ensure your child comes to school in their PE kit on PE days, and regular school uniform on non PE days. On Thursday, swim day, please ensure your child comes to school wearing their PE kit, and brings their swim kit in a separate waterproof bag. Please make sure all swimming items are clearly labelled with your child's name.
Water Bottles and hats: Please label everything. Some children have the same water bottles as others and they often get lost; please label all of your child’s things clearly.

Please check that the school has up to date information on any medical or dietary requirements. We will be cooking in some of our lessons and we want to make sure that we accommodate everyone's needs.

It has been wonderful to welcome the children this week, and particularly to meet the children and families who are new to BSM! We hope your child has enjoyed their first week in Year 2, and we have been impressed by their excellent behaviour, their enthusiasm and how quickly they have settled in!
Our main focus this week has been getting to know the children and establishing some routines, we will continue to do this in the coming weeks.
We have started our English and maths lessons and the children have been fantastic! In maths we have started our work on place value looking at grouping objects in 10s so that they are easier to count. We have been also practising counting forward and backwards in 10s past 100.
In English we have been reviewing our high frequency words (you can find a copy of this in your child’s google classroom). We have been reading them and will later ensure that we can spell them all accurately.
We also created some artwork that included blending colours and sharing information all about us.
In reading we will continue to assess your child’s reading levels over the next two weeks and plan to share reading books next Wednesday (6.9.23)
We read a lovely book during our transition day called The Dot. We made a display using artwork that some of the children created on that day. Here is a link to a reading of it.
Google Classroom: Please take the time to navigate around the google classroom and read with your child. No homework has been set for this week; however, we have added the first 100 frequency words in the material section.

Reading: Please use your child's Personal Organiser to record daily reading and communicate any messages to their teacher. You will also find a copy of the class timetable in the front and also in the Google Classroom.
Home reading books will be sent out next week and should be returned every Wednesday. Your child will be issued with a library bag and two library books next week, library books are to be returned every Sunday.
